Yusra Mardini, a Syrian refugee who helped save a boat carrying fellow refugees, has now been appointed by the UN as its new Goodwill Ambassador.

Mardini’s timely action saved around 20 lives of refugees who were escaping Damascus.

Yusra (19) is also one of the ten athletes to participate in the Rio Olympics under the Olympic Refugee Team.

A scientist from Tezpur University, Sanjay Prathihar has been chosen for the prestigious Indian National Science Academy medal for the category of The Youngest Scientist Award 2017.

Sanjay worked in the Department of Chemical Sciences and he has been awarded for his outstanding contribution to multi metal complexes, selective sensing of H2q+ions and various important applications in agriculture.

The GST council has finalized tax rates on 80 to 90 percent of goods and services under the four slab structure, with essential items of daily use being kept in the lowest category of 5%.

An Earth-like planet Proxima B is thought to be of the similar size to Earth, creating the possibility that it could also have an Earth-like atmosphere.

It is seen to be orbiting around our closest neighboring star Proxima Centauri, about 4.2 light years away.

The planet may also have liquid water and the potential to support alien life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated India’s longest river bridge in Assam, close to the China border.

The Dhola-Sadiya bridge over Brahmaputra river is 9.15 kilometer long and can withstand the weight of a 60-tonne battle tank.

A massive ransomware attack shut down computer systems across several countries all over the world including India. According to various anti-virus providers, there were a minimum of 45,000 attacks in 74 countries.

However, the numbers are expected to increase. Initial complains were reported from various hospitals in United Kingdom (UK) after hospitals and clinics were forced to turn away their patients because their computers were infected by Wanna Cry virus and Eternal Blue.

The virus Eternal Blue affected computers running versions of Windows operating systems.

In the recent survey, Indore city has been ranked as the cleanest city in India among 434 cities. Meanwhile, Gonda in Uttar Pradesh has been named as the dirtiest city.

Second cleanest city in India is said to Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh followed by Surat in Gujarat. Cities in West Bengal have not been ranked as CM Mamta Banerjee declined to participate in Swachh Survekshan survey.

BANKING AFFAIRSState Bank of India has decided to cut down the rates on home loans of up to 30 lakhs by 25 basis points (1 basis point is one- hundredth of a percentage point) for new borrowers.

The rate was reduced from 8.6% to 8.35%.

Also for loans ranging from 30 lakhs to 75 lakhs, the bank has cut rates by 10 basis points.

UCO Bank faced business restrictions from RBI following mounting losses, continuous erosion of net worth and huge non-performing assets.

Indian driver Arjun Maini of Jenzer Motorsports’ created history when he became the first Indian to win a race in the GP3 series. India recently bagged a gold and a bronze at the China World Para Athletics Grand Prix held in Beijing. Ramudri Someshwara Rao won a Gold in 200m race while Hokato Sema won a Bronze in shot put.
