Science Education Dept seeks land for farmingBy Mubarak Oladosu

T h e A g . H e a d o f t h e Department of Science Education, University of

Ilorin, Dr. (Mrs.) M.A. Ahmed, has appealed to the management of the University to allocate some of its farmlands to the Agriculture Education Unit of the Department to enable it commence large scale farming.

This, according to her, will enable the Unit to contribute to the efforts to improve food security in the country and increase the country's foreign exchange earnings in an age where demand for crude oil is decreasing on account of the rise of investment in renewable energy sources.

Dr. (Mrs.) Ahmed, who made

this appeal last Wednesday (April 4, 2018) at the 2017/2018 Sales of Agro Produce Programme held at the Science Education Laboratory of the Department, noted that the staff of the Agriculture Education Unit of her Department are highly committed to the practical aspect of their work as they are to the theoretical aspect.

The don also appealed for farming implements which will enable the Department to venture into large scale mechanised farming in order to widen the experience and scope of the students of Agric Education and prepare them for the w o r l d o f a g r i c u l t u r a l entrepreneurship in addition to other advantages.

In his remarks on the occasion, the Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof. N. B. Oyedeji, commended the Agriculture Education Unit of the Department of Science Education, recalling how he became a fish farmer close to two decades ago.

Prof. Oyedeji urged the Department to keep the flag of entrepreneurship flying, saying, “I am pleased to be a part of this beautiful thing you are doing. In the past we sold fish to the public. The management was happy on that occasion and I am happy today. We appreciate your lab….beautiful, illustrative, educative…”

The refrigerator, which is unique and more effective while comparing it with the conventional fridge, was a product of a careful and t h o r o u g h r e s e a r c h b y D r. Ajijolakewu in conjunction with Engr. Musbau Babatunde, also of the Department of Microbiology, University of Ilorin.

In a chat with Unilorin Bulletin, Dr. Ajijolakewu said that research is ongoing on the need to further reduce the refrigerator's effective temperature, saying that the target is to come up with a

oCrefrigerator that works at -79 or-oC

80 . Giving a synopsis of his

research effort, Dr. Ajijolakewu, who is also the Imam of Sanrab Central Mosque, Tanke, Ilorin, pointed out that “this locally d e s i g n e d l o w t e m p e r a t u r e refrigerator will be very useful in laboratories, restaurants and in the business of preservation of items or organisms.

According to him, research in Biomedical and Life sciences is imperfect without appropriate preservative systems.

Dr. Ajijolakewu further said, "Lyophilized industrial or medically important organisms, cell lines and

plant and animal cell tissue cultures require a negative-range low temperature refrigeration system to maintain them for a longer time.

"From this system, they can be accessed and rejuvenated for subsequent use in the laboratory whi le mainta ining a l l the i r characteristics.

The researcher, however, called for supports from the authority of the University of Ilorin and other relevant agencies as well as the enactment of good policies for researchers to achieve their set goals of mass producing the product for the benefit of the people of the country.

Dr. Ajijolakewu said that the local design and fabrication of the

l o w - t e m p e r a t u r e ( - 4 5 ᵒ C ) refrigeration system was part of the University of Ilorin's core mandate of providing community services to members and non-members of the University community.

A p a r t f r o m t h e l o w temperature refrigerator, other products exhibited at the Trade Fair that are invented and produced by other staff of the University include egg value added product, locally fabricated fermentor, Unilorin Automobile speed limiter, single cell protein supplement, value added food stuff, candy sweet made of 100 percent sugarcane, ginger spiced Kulikuli, cookies , Unilorin water etc.

The Speed Limiter device was produced by five lecturers from two Departments in the University. They are: the current Head of the D e p a r t m e n t o f C o m p u t e r Engineering Dr. T. A. Ajiboye; Engr. Ganiyu Adetokun of Mechanical Engineering Department, Engr. Sanmi Adewuyi of Mechanical Engineering, Mr Mahamud Hafeez of Computer Engineering and Mr. Abdulrahaman Yusuf also of Computer Engineering Department.

The egg value addition product (powder) was produced by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Prof. Steve Bolu.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was filled with excitement at the hosting, pointed out that the Centre was established following a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna, and the University of Ilorin.

He noted that it has a mandate to coordinate capacity development in the water sector through education, training, research and information dissemination along with the National Water Resources Institute (NWRI), Kaduna, for the six (6) states of Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Niger and Plateau in the North-Central geo-political zone of Nigeria and the FCT to ameliorate w a t e r r e s o u r c e s u t i l i s a t i o n occasioned by the growing need for capacity building in the sector.

The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the gathering transcended an official ceremony “because the subject of the colloquium is key to the continuous survival of the planet earth if really water is life”.

While delivering his paper, entitled "Situational Analysis of Water Supply and Responsibilities of

Stakeholders in the Sector", the D e p u t y V i c e - C h a n c e l l o r (Management Services), Prof. Bolaji F. Sule, said that it is the responsibility of water resource planners and engineers to plan and design local and regional scaled water systems to provide water of adequate quality and quantity to various communities, towns, and cities to meet their needs at all times and to sustain good livelihood.

The Water Resources and Environmental Engineer added that the general objective is to provide safe, potable water for domestic, commercial and public uses, while ensuring adequate quantity of water at sufficient pressure for fire fighting and industries.

According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, rapid urbanization is leading to increased urban population and greater demand for water supply and sanitation services in many developing countries.

He said, “As the world's p o p u l a t i o n , e s p e c i a l l y i n developing countries, is increasing, there is a need to consider issues relating to improvement of water

and sanitation services. Such improvement will have significant and potential welfare gains in the various towns and communities".

Also in his presentation, entitled "Importance of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Water Sector and M. Sc Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Programme at University of Ilorin", Dr. A.W. Salami of the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, said that the IWRM promotes a coordinated democratic approach to management of water, land and related resources which involve multiple interests in policy making, while the traditional approach was fragmented.

In his address, the Executive Director, National Water Resources Institute (NWRI), Kaduna, Dr. Martin O. Eduvie, stressed the need for the states in the zones to key into the activities of the North Central Network for its sustainability and chart a way forward for the North Central zonal Centre.

By Olusegun Mokuolu, Fatima Abubakre and Tajudeen BabamaleGhanaian National Theatre in Unilorin with ‘Mariage of Anansewa’

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem,

has stressed the need for more collaboration among African countries in order to break the barriers in the continent.

Prof. Abdulkareem stated this last Thursday (April 5, 2018) while receiving members of the National Theatre of Ghana and the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, Legon, who paid him a courtesy visit ahead of their staging of “The Marriage of Anansewa” at the University Main Auditorium on Thursday evening.

The team was led by the Artistic Director of Drama of the National Theatre of Ghana, Mawuli Semevo.

T h e Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r observed that African countries were blessed with diverse cultures and values but lamented that instead of creating bridges among the countries, walls were being created.

While appreciating the troupe, whom he described as people that make others happy with their performances, the Vice-Chancellor also expressed appreciation for people with many talents as contained in the Theatre troupe from Ghana.

The Ghanaian troupe's visit and drama presentation is in line with a subsisting Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Performing Arts, University of Ilorin and the Ghanaian National Theatre.

In a chat with the Unilorin B u l l e t i n , s h o r t l y a f t e r t h e performance of the popular play, “The Marriage of Anansewa” last Thursday, the Director of the Centre for Advancement, University of Ilorin, Dr. Jeleel Ojuade, commended the Ghanaian Theatre for the excellent performance, describing it is “a wake-up call for Nigerians to promote our culture”. He said the performance “brought back the folktale life of Africans, particularly

that of the Ghanaians”.According to Dr. Ojuade,

“What made the performance more interesting was that it wasn't the usual drama; they had it in music, rendering the lines in form of music which makes it more interesting and they created a lot of dances and a kind of atmosphere that made it more natural. If you look at the mood, it was a great performance which brought back the glory of yesteryears of the African people. It was interesting …It is a training ground and what we saw is not just going to die like that. A lot of scholars were there, we are expecting academic papers to come out of that, from both the lecturers, postgraduate students and even the undergraduate students.... we saw some of the songs are related to people of Badagry; we saw some related to Igbo, we saw some that you will think they are Yoruba speaking people, it is just the tongue that differs…'”

Dr. Ojuade, who is also the President of the Association of Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ADSPON), stressed the inherent value of culture as well as its contributions to the society, noting that “it is a wake-up call for Nigerians to promote our culture.

“Our tradition is gradually fading away; it is a wake-up call to all of us to ensure that we uphold our tradition and ensure that that tradition keeps going... We are very fortunate. We have over 500 ethnic groups in Nigeria and if you check, you will discover that each village or hamlet have what they call tradition. They celebrate festivals and each of the festivals has more than ten or 15 dances. If we multiply that with the number of villages or ethnic configurations we have in Nigeria, we can see the array of what we can showcase to the world that we have but we don't know it. We misplace our priorities; we talk of oil, we talk of mineral resources but

we are completely blindfolded, forgetting our culture.'

The don pointed out that this has nothing to do with 'religion' but maintained that “we should go back to culture…Let's take drums for instance: “We have different drums. We have Yoruba drums- we have Bata drums, dundun drums, idiophones, saxophones…and each of these drums if you manufacture them and take them to other parts of the world, they appreciate them. They can even pay lump sum to buy it. If we encourage people to go into manufacturing of drums or construction of instruments, we will make more money. If we now encourage people to start playing it, to export it, and teach people of other countries or other ethnic groups to start playing it, we would make a lot of money out of it. If we say it is the costumes alone that we want to try and export, we will make a lot of money but a lot of people are not thinking through that. We can improve our economy through construction, sales, playing it, teaching people how to play some of these instruments' he added.

W h i l e u r g i n g t h e government to do the right thing by improving funding for the education sector, Dr. Ojuade further enjoined governments at all levels to encourage the theatre related disciplines through identifying talents especially at the grass root rural areas in order to showcase them to the world, saying, 'they are the custodians of these tradition' and not people at the centre.

In 2015, Dr. Ojuade had facilitated the Memorandum of Understanding between the National of Theatre Ghana and the National Troupe of Nigeria as well as with the Performing Arts Department, University of Ilorin while he was on a research Fellowship at the University of Legon, Ghana.

According to Olorunsola, the project “seeks to streamline the middle men barrier of data services, bitcoin sales, Gift Cards, sales of JAMB e-pin and payment of PHCN bills to the hands of students and students alone, thereby giving each entrepreneurial inclined student the opportunity and unseen framework of earning alongside schooling, which will, in turn, bridge the barrier

In a chat with Unilorin Bulletin, the student blogger said, “The project, which has its own website, brings everything from direct sources, beyond the wholesale p r i c e s t h e r e b y c u t t i n g a l l middlemen, data dissemination outlets, payment organisations and putting just students in the process of disseminating these services as well as gaining buoyantly alongside schooling”.

Sheikh Aduagba, who observed that all happy moments in life were by chance while death remains the inevitable end, also encouraged all living souls to sit back and plan for life after death.

The Muslim Cleric opined that no matter the position one occupies in life, everyone would become equal before God on the Day of Judgment, adding that only the people with good deeds would have paradise as their final abode.

He also extolled the virtues of the deceased, describing her as a committed Muslim and therefore admonished the bereaved to always remember her in prayer.

UNILORIN PRESS

Never in my entire working career so far, in both the private and public sectors, have I encountered a more patently candid, unapologetically blunt and

thpurposively sincere boss than the 10 Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem. Probably the most misunderstood holder of that position so far, the Professor of Chemical Engineering would say the truth to whomever, notwithstanding the circumstance or the latent or manifest consequence. And since human nature abhors bitter truth, no matter how helpful this may be in the long run, the Vice-Chancellor has, on account of his uncompromising candour, attracted not a few silent rebels to his vision and his person.

But like the well-guided sailor, who has trained his eyes on the set goal, his destination, Prof. Abdulkareem remains undaunted and unwavering in his resolve to enthrone the mantra of “business unusual” in human and financial management in the University. He would brook no distraction from mischief makers and saboteurs. Neither would he be sucked in by the antics of sycophants or the fawning ploys of the starry-eyed flatterers within the rank and file of the work-force.

He could be extremely down-to-earth. When it comes to admitting his human frailty as an imperfect mortal, the American - trained Professor of Chemical Engineering would humbly climb down from his Olympian height and face the undeniable reality. This characteristic trait of a humble, even if blunt, leader was openly displayed during his interaction with the staff of the University, academic and non-teaching, on March 26, 2018. That meeting was a notch higher than an earlier one held on October 25, 2017, the VC's very first interaction with any group of workers, that of the Congregation, a conclave of the select elite university graduates among the staff members. In the expansive Main Auditorium of the University that Monday morning, not a few attendees cringed with trepidation and palpable tenterhooks, as blunt postulations rolled out of the Vice-Chancellor's mouth like divine sermons that are untainted by demagogic rhetoric.Prefacing his prepared speech with the rationale for the surprising “general staff meeting”, the Vice-Chancellor explained, “This kind of meeting will not only give us the opportunity to think together to arrive at consensus and mutual understanding, it will also be an avenue of thrashing out unfounded rumours that might threaten our unity of purpose”.

Amidst pin-drop silence, Prof. Abdulkareem practically called the staff to arms “in the cause of moving the University higher and higher with its reputation; and with what it is known for to continuously remain intact”. And on his part, Prof. Abdulkareem pledged to “remain committed soul and body”, to ensure that Unilorin does not degenerate into the “harrowing past”.

Not one given to flippany, the Vice-Chancellor

told his audience that he would never shy away from taking actions for fear of being accused of taking wrong decisions. According to him, “some leaders are constrained not talk at all in order not to be accused of 'mistalking'; they are also often constrained not to act in order not to be adjudged of being wrong or having 'misacted'. But this is not my personality. I believe in speaking the truth with frankness…(and) I believe in acting when there is the need to act. This is because as Confucius said, “To know what is right and not doing it is the worst cowardice".

On this note, Prof. Abdulkareem appealed to members of the University community to understand his personality, which, according to him, “is essentially built on informed frankness”. He said, “Let everyone understand that I will say “No!” when there is a threat to our common goal”, quoting Gandhi's famous axiom, “A 'No' uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please”.

And in an apparent bid to drive home his point, the Vice-Chancellor said, “So, let everyone bear with me and understand me as a leader that will yield with graciousness and oppose with informed firmness. When there is a need for me to apologise for my frailty as an imperfect mortal, I will not hesitate to do so as long as the need for the apology is driven by the larger goal of sustaining and improving the glory of this University. On your part, do not hesitate to tell me when I am wrong. As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, the people to fear are not those who disagree with you, but those who disagree with you but do not tell you to your face out of cowardice or sycophancy.

Spicing up his speech with a pithy joke, the Vice-Chancellor related the encounter of a blind man with God. He said, “A friend once told me a joke: A blind person asked God, “Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight? God replied that: “Yes, losing your vision”. With this Godly response in mind, Prof. Abdulkareem said, “It is on this lighter note I appeal that we should not lose our vision for this University; the vision that has been defining what we are, what we stand for and what we are known with. Let the larger goal continue to override all our actions. Let us put malice and personal ego aside and march on as trained and loyal army willing to sacrifice for the good of our common goal. Loyalty, in this sense, to me, means “nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice” of personal gains and aggrandizements. At this juncture, I need to let you know that honest efforts and self-sacrifice at sustaining and improving the glory of this University will not go unrewarded at our own level. I equally know that “the Almighty Pay-Master” will never fail to reward us all accordingly.

Such is the hallmark of visionary leadership! And in all these, it is obvious that Prof. Abdulkareem is driven by an undiluted passion for service excellence and an uncanny desire to sustain and eventually surpass the excellence for which Unilorin has come to be known for some time now.
