ws what that means: an inux ofhmen students attending every clubting trying to gure out where they

attend various meetings to get anrview of what the club is all about, what is the best way to actually getvely involved with an organization?u guessed joining committees, thenare absolutely correct.

Almost every club on campus has

committees, in which students caninvolved within the club itself. Byng a committee, you are able to gainds-on experience and get a feel forther or not you actually like what youdoing.n PRSSA, there are two committeeshich one can be involved: the Socialrs committee, led by Anna-Marie Frantz, viceident of social affairs, and the Social Media/lic Relations committee, led by Amandaanik, vice president of public relations.

Getting involved early on in your collegecareer puts you ahead in the game, Stefaniksaid. It gives you great experience for yourrsum and clips for your portfolio, which willmake you stand out to future internship and job

    employers.Rather than just attending a m

On the Social Media/Public Rcommittee, members are able toiers for upcoming meetings, wr

What makes the Social committee a unique experience

ent-run rm and has been recognized

ous years by PRSSA National as the mosttanding rm in the nation.

his year, the rm has accomplished a great

by increasing its membership to more200 students, most of who are also active

mbers of PRSSA. In addition to new members,rm has added seven new accounts from the

ious school year. The rm provides service6 accounts at local, regional and nationals.hief Executive Ofcer of ImPRessions,

le Bersani, has spent her past four yearsng advantage of the opportunities andenges that ImPRessions offers. Starting off

an account associate on the ImPRessionsnal account her freshman year, she wasto gain experience in human resources andnal communications.

The rm was much smaller then, but I got to

n how to design newsletters, create pressases and plan events, before even learningm in class she recalled. Now, the accounta bigger role in the daily functions of the rm

h as helping with all the social media outlets. As a sophomore, Bersani took what shened from working with the internal accountapplied it as a co-account executive on theege Book Store account. As a junior, sheame the vice president of administration forrm and an account supervisor for the E.W.

pps School of Journalism account.or freshmen and sophomore studentsested in public relations, this may seem like

mpossible feat. ImPRessions is competitive,h like the other organizations run byents in the Scripps program. How does oned out from the rest and climb the rungs of theRessions ladder?Joining is the rst step. The next step is

ng involved and getting noticed, Bersani

our years ago, there were only sixty or so

mbers. Now, at 200 members, the opportunity

to get involved, along with the challenge to standout, has increased. It is very competitive andchallenging in a good way. It comes down togetting involved and getting to know people,Bersani said.

Heather Bartman and Rachel Csaszarcurrently serve as vice president of administrationand operations. They also nd that involvement

with ImPRessions is about nding the right

balance, combined with consuming just the rightamount of caffeine.

In the highly competitive world of Scripps, there are countless opportunities for students toget involved and set themselves apart. However,

Bersani encourages students to nd whatinterests them most and dedicate themselves tothat.

No stranger to dedication, M.J. Clark, wasnamed the professional adviser of ImPRessionswhen the rm gained its National Afliation in

February. She has been connected to PRSSAand ImPRessions since she was a studentand eventually a visiting professor at the E.W.Scripps School of Journalism.

Get involved in whatever capacity you can.Keep your ears open and learn as much as

possible. Other than that, the most imthing is to be courageous, Clark advise

As a PR professional, Clark knowcan be very difcult for students to sdecent internship. However, ImPRessuseful because it gives students internsexperience.

There is a lot of work that can be an entire year, she said. The PR indalways challenging and ImPRessionstudents their rst experience with this.

After students have gained experiegotten involved with ImPRessions, thlogical step is applying that experienc

    internship.Going into internships, employers ar

surprised to see how structured ImPResis and how closely it mirrors a PR rm in

real world, Bersani said.Students in ImPRessions are encour

work on different accounts each year in to get a variety of experience. This ensuthat students will be able to relate their wImPRessions to their work in future interand careers.
