Get Fitmaximize today’s safety headgear technology by making sure your helmet fits right. start by measur-ing your head’s circumference at its widest part using a cloth measuring tape, then compare that to sizing guides provided by manufacturers of the helmets in which you’re interested. size charts based on quarter-inch increments or several sizes within a small-to-large

range are the norm. then there’s head shape: do you have an oval,

long oval or a round noggin? try on models from several manufacturers. if one fits in the front and back, but gaps at the side, you’re in the oval category. some companies offer helmets in different shapes, and oth-ers address this with dial-based or other systems to fine-tune the fit. you’ll find ample sizing information for each helmet on the websites we’ve included.

Keeping ’Em Cleancareful laundering can prolong your breeches investment. Be sure to check the label for spe-cific instructions. turning your pants inside out before washing will prevent fading, and one tea-spoon of white vinegar added to the first wash cycle will help set the color in leather knee patches or seats. especially for breeches with leather, take them out of the machine as soon as the cycle is done. this prevents the leather from bleeding onto the regular fabric. air-drying is best, and rolling the breeches in a towel to remove excess water will speed up the process, which in turn keeps the leather from drying out or stiffening.

Veredus GuarnieriGuarnieri’s Boa lacing system was originally developed by a frustrated snowboarder in search of a better-fitting boot. The resulting leg-closure dial in this Italian-made boot ensures a great fit for any size calf and can be adjusted for riding or resting. The XT-GRIP patch on the inner calf helps secure your position, and the waterproof, breath-able Comfort Zone stretch area along the top of the foot accommodates even the highest insteps. The boot also includes a two-level spur rest and a fatigue-reducing anti-twist system in the sole. Color: black.Price: $1,095More info: www.englishridingsupply.com

Vogel Savoy EuroZipKey in the construction of Vogel’s latest boot is a lower counter for more ankle flexibility. A foot form that’s lower in the instep and smaller in the heel adds more com-fort, and the back zipper makes it easier to slip on and off. Among many options, Vogel offers several leather choices including its new “silky calf,” imported from France for its softness, suppleness and draping capabilities.Price: $1,160 to $1,465 depending on the leatherMore info: www.vogelboots.com

Cavallo VeneziaMade with supple and strong nappa leather, this boot has high-end adhesive leather on the inside of the calf to help stabilize the leg and position in the saddle. A long zip fas-tener extends to the boot’s heel and derby lacing ensures close fit through the ankle. Color: mocca.Price: $845 (men & women)More info: www.cavallo.info

Voltaire ElectreOne of four in the new line of boots from Voltaire Design, the Electre has a zipper that starts in the back at the top and curves around the ankle for a snug, custom fit that’s particularly helpful if you have slim ankles and calves. Options include spur rests, rubber soles, narrow or wide tops, an inside grip and rhinestone detailing. All are lined with the saddlery’s signa-ture blue leather. Colors: classic black and brown, soft black and soft brown. Price: $1,390More info: www.voltaire-design.com

Dehner Dress in Patent LeatherDehner’s Basic Dress Boot is far from new, but its availability in patent leather is. Prompted by demand, especially from dres-sage riders, the company added this to its line of traditional custom-made riding boots. The Basic Dress style comes with many options, ranging from leather or composition soles to cuts in four different boot top heights. Fit relies on accurate measurements taken by approved dealers or by using the company’s detailed guides. Color: black.Price: $1,025More info: www.dehner.com

Breaking In Should Not Be Hard To Dosupple leathers, elastic inserts and zippers have eased the process of breaking in new boots, but it can still be painful. Boots don’t fit right until they’ve “dropped” in height and softened up enough to mold to your leg. or-der new boots well before you really need them. wear them around the house, the barn and, gradually, while riding. if they hurt the back of your knee or ankle area, take them off and try again another day. Lifts glued into the sole will raise the heel and leg and thus relieve pres-sure in the back of the knee. in general, custom-made boots break in more easily because their height is care-fully measured to accommodate the right amount of drop.

even if you don’t plan to compete, understanding the US Equestrian Federation’s rules regarding body protectors is a good starting point for determining which model might be right for you. Current rules require the use of a body-protecting vest both warming up for and on cross-country in sanctioned eventing competitions and mandate that

inflatable vests can be worn only with body protectors underneath. USEF recommends that safety vests meet or exceed ASTM/SEI standards, but it does not require that. The body protectors included here meet current ASTM and/or BETA (British Equestrian Trade Association) standards, the latter of which requires the most protection. First created for motorcycle riders, inflatable vests are relatively new in the equestrian world. Neither BETA nor ASTM currently has standards for inflatable vests for equestrian use, but BETA has a committee working on them.

Charles Owen jL9 Body Protector The Charles Owen jL9 is constructed from Gelfoam®, which is heat activated and hugs your body for flexibility, pro-

viding support and stability. Ven-tilation holes are covered in Cool-max® fabric for wicking power. The active joint design prevents the vest from riding up while allowing you to

maintain freedom of motion. The jL9 includes a mobile-phone pocket and an easy-zip front with buckle closure. The vest is available in versions that meet both ASTM and BETA standards, the latter being thicker and offering more protection. Color: centennial purple to celebrate Charles Owen’s 100th year.Price: $203.90More info: www.charlesowen.com

Airowear Junior OutlyneNew from the body protector company known for vests made specifically for women, this unisex

version of the Outlyne for kids is made of soft, pliable materials that allow unrestricted movement. Its Ultra-

Flex™ technology uses thin shock-absorbing materials to mold to the body’s contours, a process accel-erated by body heat. Meets ASTM and BETA standards. Colors: black with turquoise trim and several cross-country colors.Price: $254.50 for juniors; $334.90 for women.More info: (800) 800-4261

Tipperary Equestrian Competitor XCThe lightweight, high-density foam allows for protective impact energy and a fit that moves with the body.

Construction allows air to circulate, cooling the body in high tem-peratures. The higher-cut torso encourages mobility in

the hip angle, while the arm-hole cut allows maximum shoulder reach and rotation. The vest exceeds ASTM standards. Colors: black, hunter green, navy and purple. Price: $249.95More info: www.phoenixperformance.com

Rodney Powell PRO Body ProtectorThe tension-equalizing waistband of the updated PRO model enables unaided adjustment. Its front panels have four-layer glide architecture for flexibility, combined with a panel of graded foam that molds over the abdomen for comfort. The PRO is available with two back options: The Flexi-Back uses four layers of soft gel foam for rapid molding; the X2 Enhanced Spinal Protection has center-back protection from laminated, gel foam that is more than twice that required by current BETA standards (also meets ASTM standards). Available in 150 sizes; also custom-made option. Colors: black, navy and several cross-country colors.Price: $220More info: www.powellprotec.com

Vested Interests consider replacing your body protector every three to five years because its shock-absorbing capabilities can decrease over time. any dents that do not bounce back within a half an hour need to be examined by a qualified dealer: in some cases, just that part of the vest can be replaced. when not in use, hang your vest in a closet that’s warm but not hot, zip the zippers to help maintain shape and secure hook-and-loop closures to keep out cloggers like horse hair and dirt.

Hit Air AdvantageConnected to the saddle by a lanyard (a cord with attached hook), this vest inflates in .15 sec-ond when horse and rider part ways, providing cushioning protec-tion for the neck, spine, chest and tailbone. When not deployed, the halter-style vest is thin and weighs between 2 and 3 pounds. The hip air bag is tucked away in a pocket to prevent interference between seat and saddle. After deployment, replace the CO2 cartridge and you’re back on course. Velcro® attaches optional chest and back padding and a waist adjuster. Colors: black, blue, red and reflective yellow. Checking for Back PainPoor saddle fit is the main contributor in a high per-centage of performance problems. identifying back pain is a good start when determining whether that’s the case with your horse.

with your fingertips on your horse’s spine, drop

your thumb down to the depression just below the with-ers, usually 4 or 5 inches down. Keeping your fingers and thumb in that position, slide your hand toward his rump, pressing into the muscle every 1.5 to 2 inches. if the muscles feel taut and tense, that’s soreness; if your horse stiffens there, he’s really sore. do this regularly to catch potential problems early.

Magnets, various foams and sheepskins, and

recycled body heat are enlisted in this cause, and the end result is lots of great choices.

Clarify Your Needsthink before you shop. Before facing the mind-bog-gling number of therapeutic saddle pads available, clarify your needs. if you are just learning to sit the extended trot or are struggling with falling behind over fences, shock absorption is a priority. if you have a

solid position, put your emphasis on pads that distrib-ute weight evenly. if your horse has a sore spot or you want to address minor saddle-fit issues, consider a pad with shims for fine-tuning. Be ready to experiment with several pads to make sure they work well with your horse and your saddle, but first check with the supplier to find out their return policy.
