• So many options…you’ve thought about it for a while….
• Environmental Management Systems• trying to save water, energy…• get a policy in place… all good stuff …
but:
1st tip: key people in the organisation have to want to do it!
Ask yourself some searching questions:
Who wants to do it?... Why?Who must do it?... get them on board?Why do it? ….markets, costs, carbon?Where do you want to be? Backcasting! You’ll like the next bit…
Don’t do anything!
• Consult – inform - motivate – • Encourage – inspire - empower…
• Do not start with the woodwork lesson, inspire them to cross the ocean. Then discuss boat building!
• Tip 2: build ownership and participation!
Yet!
What’s your problem?
• Where do I start?...transport, energy, waste, water...?
• How do you affect the environment – directly and indirectly?
• Set out your inputs – processes – and outputs with others.
Tip 3: understand your
organisations sustainability strengths and weaknesses
• ....how significant are your impacts?• .... use simple controls to monitor:
energy use, water use, transport, procurement, waste…
• seek ideas e.g. automation.
Tip 4: measure and prioritise!
What are the known knowns, and the known unknowns!?
Starter ideas...
• Energy: insulation, information, and procurement!
• Waste – who do you give your resources too? Where there’s muck there’s brass!
• Water – checked your meter lately?
• Summer cooling….shade!
