Finding the Average: Mean, Median, and ModeIn statistics, there are three kinds of averages: mean, median, and mode.

Example

For each problem below, find the mean, median, and mode.

-MEAN: The mean of a group of numbers is the average of the numbers.

-MEDIAN:

-MODE: The mode of a group of numbers is the number that appears most often.

The median of a group of numbers is the number that is exactly in the middle when the numbers are arranged numerically. Note: For even sets of numbers, take the average of the middle two numbers.

Soccer Goals

5 12 19 11 15 32 18 5 3

MEAN: Add all the numbers together (3+5+5+11+12+15+18+19+32=120) then divide (120) by the number of numbers added together (9), so 120 ÷ 9 = 20.MEDIAN: In this example, the number in the middle is 12.MODE: In this example, the number that reoccurs the most is 5.

Before you do any computing, you should always write the numbers in numerical order, from smallest to largest:

3 5 5 11 12 15 18 19 32

11 15 16 16 21 5 9

Practice Finding Mean

Mean is the average of a data set.It can be found by nding the sum of the set, then dividing by the number of data points.

Example: There is a data set of 1, 4, 3, 2, 6, and 2. The sum is 1 + 4 + 3 + 6 + 2+2 = 18.The number of data points is 6. Therefore, the mean is 18/6 = 3

The team with the best score based on the mean is _____________________

GradePractice Finding Mode

The mode of a data set means the number that occurs most often. It can be found by ordering each data set from lowest to highest, then seeing whichnumber occurs most frequently.

1. Write the numbers in order = 1, 1, 2, 4, 4, 6, 82. Find the numbers that appear most often = 1 (twice) and 4 (twice).

Therefore, the modes of this data set are 1 and 4.

Example: The data set is 8, 6, 1, 4, 1, 4, 2

Find the range of each data set. Don’t forget to show your work.

5th

GradeWhat’s the Range? The range of a data set is the dierence between the highest and lowest values in the set. Range can be found by ordering the data from least to greatest value, then subtracting the lowest value from the highest value in the set.

1. Write them in order = 10, 11, 12, 12, 14, 15 2. Find the highest value = 15. 3. Find the lowest value = 10. 4. Subtract 10 from 15 = 5. 5. The range of this data set is 5.

Example: The data set is: 12, 11, 15, 12, 10, 14.

Squares, Cubes, and RootsSquares, cubes, square roots, and cube roots may seem like difficult math problems at

first, but once you learn how to solve them, you will find that they are both easy and fun!

- The square of a number is the number times itself.- The square root of a number is a number that can be multiplied by itself to give the original number. It is the inverse operation of squaring a number.- The cube of a number is the number multiplied by itself twice.- The cube root of a number is, a value that when cubed, gives the original number. It is the inverse operation of cubing a number.

Examples

Square: 5 = 5 x 5 = 25

Cube: 5 = 5 x 5 x 5 = 1253

Surface Area: A Rectangular Prism

1. Find the area of each pair:

Area of a rectangle = length x width

2. Add the area of each face altogether:

Therefore, the surface area of this cube is 220 sq. inches.

Finding the Average: Mean, Median, and ModeIn statistics, there are three kinds of averages: mean, median, and mode.

Example

For each problem below, find the mean, median, and mode. For the mean, round your answer to the nearest hundredth.
