Building an Igloo

The Inuit, who are native people of Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland, are known for

living in cold, harsh climates. The Inuit people of northern Canada sometimes build igloos, which are

winter shelters made of snow and ice. Today the Inuit live mostly in wooden houses, but when

traveling far from home, they may still build igloos to live in temporarily.

Usually, two people work together to cut blocks of snow to make an igloo. They choose a

firm, smooth place on the snow-covered ground to build on. They cut packed snow with a long knife

and begin placing the blocks in a circle. The first blocks are cut at an angle to create a base that

allows the igloos to be built with a spiral shape. The second row of snow blocks goes on top of the

first row. The blocks are slightly tilted inward so that they lean toward the center. As the igloo

builders continue, they place each row of blocks a little farther in. The blocks begin to arch, forming

a dome-shaped structure. Skilled builders know how to keep the blocks from falling as they work.

Finally, they put one last block of packed snow at the top, and the igloo is complete. They may cut a

hole in this last block to let smoke out.

How can a home built of snow keep people warm? Snow and ice are good at keeping in heat.

They trap body heat inside the igloo. If the people inside an igloo light a candle or use a small oil

lamp, the heat from the candle or lamp is trapped inside as well. The heat may start to melt the inside

of the igloo walls, but the snow closer to the outside causes the melting snow to freeze again.

Refreezing makes the walls icy, and ice is stronger than snow. Thus, with a little use, the igloo

becomes stronger. The igloo is an example of how creative the Inuit are. They know how to use

available materials to protect themselves in cold weather.

Sled Dogs in Greenland

The Thule people are ancestors of the modern-day Inuit people. Between AD 1200 and 1300,

they settled in Greenland, an island near Canada between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. The Thule

survived in this cold place due to their knowledge of the weather, landscape, and animal behavior.

They knew how to adapt to a challenging environment with long, unforgiving winters and short, cool

summers. Their dogs adapted as well. The Thule were probably the first to bring dogs and the

practice of dogsledding to Greenland.

The Thule relied on sled dogs as a means of transportation. They built sleds of driftwood and

leather straps, or lines, and tied 10 to 14 dogs to one sled. Each dog had a separate line, and the lead

dog had a line longer than all the others. The dogs pulled heavy loads on long journeys. They pulled

the Thule across sea ice. The dogs lived through cold and hunger. These dogs, now known as

Greenland dogs, developed into a strong, tireless, and fierce breed.

Sled dogs remain a part of the culture of Greenland to this day. In fact, current laws forbid

people from bringing any other breed of dogs to northern Greenland. That remote area has become a

safe place for the Greenland dog. This working dog breed has become an important part of the

adventure tourism industry on the island. People who want to experience firsthand the thrill of

humans and dogs working together will enjoy visiting Greenland and its unique dogs.
