PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE AT VOLET’S HOTEL AND RESORT INC.
Christian Carlo I. Obenita
INTRODUCTION
Managers have two powerful ways of improving the performance and productivity of
their subordinates, which are counseling and on the job training. Counseling is the process of
helping a subordinate define and resolve personal problems that effect performance or in order to
develop a good attitude to work. On the job training is the process of explaining, demonstrating
and the structured supervision of specific skills or particular tasks. It is similar to the teaching
process. On the job training is often referred to as OJT (Thomas, 2005).
Confucius once said: "If all I do is hear, I will forget. If I hear and see, I will remember. If I hear, see and
do, I will understand."
On-the-Job-Training or OJT is job training that occurs in the work place. It has many advantages,
but it can also have a few disadvantages if the OJT is not planned and executed properly. It is part of a
college curriculum that aims to train and orient students about the work and their future career. It is
very important not only to teach students their chosen career but to show students the reality about
working. Most students nowadays are not serious in their training. They don't plan ahead and pick
the best company that they can choose. Worst, they ended up cleaning the desk of their superior
or doing unrelated tasks (Gomez, 2010).
A narrative report submitted to the faculty of the Department of Management, Cavite State University-Silang Campus, Silang, Cavite in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management with Contribution No. Prepared under the supervision of Mrs. Emy Grace B. Patambang.
As a future practitioner in HRM industry, every student before graduating must undergo
on-the-job training to access the absorbed knowledge and skills of the student that has been
adopted in an academic institution. This way, students can modify his or her skills by the actual
practice from the establishments or training center in relation to the field of specialization

THE LINKAGE INSTITUTION/TRAINING CENTER
Background
A month after the union of Ms. Violeta L. Alicdan and Mr. Eduardo M. Jardiniano in June 1977, they opened a store with the trade name “Volet’s Store. “They used to sell office and school supplies, gift items, biscuits, candies and non-alcoholic beverages. The Store is located at the town plaza, in front is the elementary school; at the back is the public market; left side is the municipal hall and the right side is the catholic church and a private high school. Since people from all walks of life used to pass by, the strategic site of the store is really marketable, with this, the spouse ventured to another kind of business. They sell fruits and homemade hamburgers and offered it in the most economical price made affordable by commuters especially school children. From there hamburgers and sandwiches, “ Volet’s Canteen “ came into existence. Aside from burgers and sandwiches, they introduce new menus such as goto-beef, goto-chicken, goto-egg, mami-chicken, mami beef, pancit palabok and spaghetti. The store opens as early as 5:00am and closed at 9:00pm. Later on became “ Volet’s Gotohan” which is currently operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Menus were revised as to goto, pancit palabok, spaghetti , sandwiches and the introduction of Filipino breakfast menus such as tapsilog, porksilog, etc. The peak of sales is usually early morning and late evening wherein all fast food centers are already closed. Volet’s Gotohan became the inspiration of spouses to establish “ Volet’s Restaurant” in year 1985. The restaurant is located in the same place where the newly constructed commercial stall is. By that time, Volet’s Restaurant is the only fine dining restaurant in this municipality and nearby towns. The customers were usually tourists going to tagaytay. Employees used to receive inquiry if they also have a resort. Thus, the couple decided to venture a new business again which is a resort swimming pool. The spouses did not stop from there, they used to forecast what will be the other needs of their valued guest and the new business that could simultaneously step side by side in a community of continuing development like Dasmariñas . For them, businesses should always adopt the changes in the community to be competitive, stable and profitable. Since the business is really at it’s peak of expansion, the Mr. and Mrs. Jardiniano decided to convert the hotel and resort into a family corporation in year 2004. A timely decision, because elder children is now responsible enough to be inclined in their family business where bread and butter of the whole family is being derived. At present, Volet’s Hotel and Resort, Inc. has 42 rooms, 11 swimming pools in the resort, 2 spacious function rooms catering different kinds of occasion. They also operate a bar, which popularly called as Eduardo’s KTV-BAR for more than 10 years in the business. The company has a commercial building for lease along Aguinaldo Hi-way, Dasmariñas, Cavite aside from their Volet’s Gotohan open 24 hours which has been in the food industry for 15 years.
