WHO IS IT FOR?

The live sessions will be held every Friday. Two live session times will be available, morning orafternoon, GMT (subject to demand).

You will be given registered access to our online learning management platform for the coursesyllabus. Here you will be able to track your academic progress and communicate with fellowstudents and course leaders using forums and discussion groups. Content will be delivered througha blend of formats, including reading, interactive quizzes, videos and guided research. The liveand interactive sessions will run each week via Zoom. These will involve discussions and activitiesdesigned to enhance your learning experience.

We wi l l ta lk about taking act iveownership of your career developmentand support your th inking through arange of opt ional learning resourcesaimed at personal development. These wi l linc lude explor ing personal res i l iencethrough mindfulness and wel lbeing,bui ld ing assert iveness, managing theimposter syndrome and f inding externalsupport through mentor ing or coaching.By the end of th is sect ion of the course,you should have a c lear plan of act ion tocont inue to grow and develop as aconservat ion leader.

In th is theme you wi l l learn how views onleadership have been reframed over t ime,no longer recognised as a stat ic set ofpr incip les but a combinat ion of natural andlearned behaviours and strategies,adapted to draw out the best in s i tuat ionsand people. Self-awareness plays animportant ro le in effect ive leadership; wewi l l therefore spend t ime explor ing yourpreferred leadership sty les, your strengthsand areas for development, and ult imatelydiscuss why leadership is so important inconservat ion. As we learn abouts i tuat ional leadership, we wi l l exploremethods to help you assess context, suchas mapping organisat ional culture, so youmay understand how to f lex yourleadership approach most effect ively.

This theme wi l l focus on theinterpersonal sk i l ls that are necessaryfor effect ive conservat ion leadership.You wi l l begin by audit ing your ownski l ls and ident ify ing which you’d l ike todevelop. We wi l l explore concepts suchas emot ional inte l l igence, conf l ictresolut ion, negot iat ion, communicat ion,feedback, act ive l istening andnetworking, and ident ify how each ofthese can be part of the toolk i t of aneffect ive leader. We wi l l end bydiscuss ing the ro le of col laborat ion inconservat ion, and the re lat ionshipbetween col laborat ion and leadership.

In th is theme, we wi l l explore why teamsare so important in conservat ion, and howto establ ish and lead high-performingteams that help us del iver ourconservat ion goals . We wi l l review theprocess of team development, and theimportance of a posit ive team culture.You wi l l learn pract ical t ips for mot ivat ingyour team, employing strengths-basedleadership, and also how to manage theprocess of change as a leader. We wi l lref lect on how we can useful ly learn fromfai lure, and we wi l l br ief ly introduce someproject management tools re levant toworking with teams in conservat ion.

FAUNA & FLORA INTERNATIONALBobbi manages FFI’s Professional Development programme, where she supports staff toidentify and meet their training and development needs. She has recently launched FFI’sonline learning platform for staff. Bobbi initially trained as a teacher of Science and spent 2years teaching in UK schools, before moving to Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew where shemanaged the training programme for Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank Partnership. Prior to joiningFFI, Bobbi designed and built online modules for Masters and Undergraduate degrees forCoventry University. Bobbi specialises in learning design and development, particularly foronline delivery.

BOBBI HOPE

FAUNA & FLORA INTERNATIONALChloe is FFI’s Head of Learning and Partner Development in the Conservation Capacity andLeadership team, where she supports FFI staff and partners strengthen their skills inestablishing, managing and supporting biodiversity conservation projects. Chloe has a PhDin Anthropology, an MSc in Environmental Technology, and has worked as a Teaching Fellowin Human Ecology at University College London. Prior to joining FFI, she spent a number ofyears working in East and Central Africa, exploring the effectiveness of integratingconservation and development in practice. Before joining the Conservation Capacity team in2013, she also spent 5 years in FFI’s Africa team, co-ordinating and managing projects inWest Africa.

DR CHLOE HODGKINSON

DURRELL WILDLIFE CONSERVATION TRUSTHelen joined Durrell early in 2020, delivering conservation training though lectures andbespoke mentoring programmes. Educated at Cardiff University (BSc Zoology), Helen wenton to develop her field research skills in Mauritius as a nature reserve warden for threeyears, before going on obtain her PhD in conservation biology through University CollegeLondon. Beyond academia, Helen has experience in species monitoring to inform policy andpractice, both through work with DEFRA and in the environmental consultancy sector.Deeply rooted within these roles has been her joy for training others, and with diverseexperience in teaching and communication, Helen is passionate about expanding the qualityand global reach of Durrell’s training programmes

DR HELEN CLAIRE GATH

DURRELL WILDLIFE CONSERVATION TRUSTTim oversees all of Durrell’s conservation training activities. Before joining the Academy in2010, Tim previously worked for eleven years in Durrell's Mammal Department. During thattime, he was responsible for the lemur collection at Durrell, as well as carrying out fieldworkin Madagascar, providing GIS support to staff, co-ordinating population management ofseveral captive breeding programmes, and working in Durrell’s conservation genetics lab.Tim oversees all course design, delivery and assessment, and is also responsible for liaisingwith the University of Kent for validated courses and ensuring that they are maintained athigh standards.

DR TIM WRIGHT

FAUNA & FLORA INTERNATIONALMarianne is the Director of Conservation Capacity & Leadership, directing a team withinFFI, which (amongst other things) supports individuals from around the world to developtheir conservation leadership potential, develops strategies and works to support regionalefforts to build effective conservation capacity with local partner organisations. She hasexperience working with a wide range of people in the non-governmental, government,corporate and academic sectors internationally. She has over 20 years of internationalexperience in conservation capacity building, leadership training, organisational supportand local community outreach. Key skills include partnership development, organisationalplanning, team building & management, network development, mentoring and coaching andknowledge management for nature conservation
