The 62nd Republic Day was celebrated enthusiastically by the Staff and Students of SIMC, SIBM, SCDL and Symbiosis Society, Bengaluru. The function was hosted by SIMC Bengaluru. The day started with flag hoisting by the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ramesh Ramanathan,Co-Founder, Janaagraha. He is also the National Technical Advisor, Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, Government of India and Principal Advisor to the Government of Rajasthan with regard to State Urban Reforms and has decades of experience in urban microfinance. Mr. Ramanathan shared his experience of leaving his successful career as a high-flying Citibanker

in New York and returning to India. He spoke about how he, along with his wife, started Janaagraha as a movement to encourage people's participation in public governance. He discussed about the various problems that India is facing and the important measures to be taken in order to resolve them.He motivated the students by underlining the importance of the day and also emphasized that as responsible citizens, it was their duty to make an effort to bring about the change they wanted to see in the society. The interaction was an overwhelming experience for all. The Program was efficiently hosted by Pooja Pillai, SIMC and Shalin Kotia, SIBM. Various cultural activities and speeches

were presented by the students. The Celebrations ended with a vote of thanks by Himadri Garg, Vice President,

Most of us would have heard of those unbelievable instances of major brands messing up communication in different countries around the world. Take for instance when Kentucky Fried Chicken entered the Chinese market, to their horror they discovered that their slogan "finger lickin' good" meant "eat your fingers off ”! Or when Pepsi entered the Chinese market a few years ago, the translation of their slogan "Pepsi Brings you back to Life" turned out to be a little more literal than they intended. In Chinese, the slogan meant, "Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave"All these cross cultural gaffes committed by major brands worldwide were dealt with in detail by Professor Atul Tandon, former Director and

Senior Professor at MICA. His session was quite an eye-opener to the various cultural nuances and intricacies that need to be taken into consideration when brands decide to communicate with a global audience. The students analyzed famous ad campaigns that had great impact worldwide such as Nike, United Colours of Benetton, HSBC amongst others. One important point made by PAT was that there are two kinds of advertisement - those that win awards and those that actually help sell the product. PAT’s sessions were extremely informative and gave us a fresh perspective on branding and marketing.

Cotton, Golden Tobacco, Citibank, Enercon, Asian Paints, Goodlass Nerolac, Merck and Godrej. He gave the students a thorough insight into the advertising world and also conducted certain exercises to foster creative thinking. For the first time the students tried their hands at ad film making which turned out to be a great learning experience.Mr. Sudarshan Shrinivasan, President of Prognosys Perception

Plus conducted sessions on Public Relations. He conducted a mock press conference which was a total learning experience for the students.

The World is our OysterAvranil Kumar Das

We, the passing out students, had a bonanza - the Outbound Training Program at the Eagle Ridge Resort which made for a great memory bank. Memories shared to be told in posterity: beautiful, happy and bright. There were as many as nine activities, each of them being a group task with a time-limit and a marking matrix. The entire batch was divided into two groups. Each new activity saw a new leader. The entire exercise saw the emergence of some brilliant tactics and ideas in completing tasks. This spanned over two days. The kaleidoscope of memories was the camaraderie, the cool breeze, the unification, the laughter, the green trees, the singing, the sleepless sky, the dancing, the unspoken whisper, the untouched dew - memories old and new, all celebrating the spirit of the times, small, big and in between, that they lived together for now and forever at that magical place called SIMC- B.

A trip to bring thelike-minded together, a friendly visit to MICA.

The trip kicked off on a 36 hour journey in the train, wherein we had a whole bogey chartered. Fighting boredom, hunger, heat and sleep, they finally reached their destination, red brick buildings adorning the colour of nature and beauty, MICA, a campus located in the heartland of rural Gujarat. Ahmedabad Darshan was the highlight of the first day with a hot air balloon

ride, some golas and lots of shopping. The second day saw interaction with the MICA faculty facilitated by Mr Alan D’Souza. This was followed by lunch and high tea sponsored bySIMC- B. Students got an excellent chance to interact and gain knowledge and different perspectives to varied issues.

The feedback from the MICA faculty was thus, “students everywhere are not very different, they all are equally intelligent and enterprising”. The Ads presented by the students were also well received. Our students got to see some of the work by the MICA students and their curriculum.

The Sports and Adventure Club, SAC, organized an intra-campus basketball tournament. The players as well as the cheering crowd displayed unparalleled energy and enthusiasm. There was a lot of excitement in the air with everyone exuberantly supporting their respective teams. Ironically, the ‘Underdogs’ won the Boys’ Tournament, emerging Wunderdogs, while the SIBM seniors’ team won the Girls’ Tournament.

The dawning of the new millennium paved way to many great inventions but the one thing that took the world by storm was perhaps the emergence of Digital Media. A new platform which not only is opening new avenues but is also bringing the people of the world closer to each other, now one wouldn’t even start to imagine in how many ways. SocialNetworking was probably the ultimatebreakthrough in the digital space during the past decade with popular websites like Facebook and Twitter taking the lead. You know that there’s bound to be big business involved when there’s a freshindustry out there which has the potential ofattracting sellers, consumers and marketers all on to a single podium. That’s the place to be and make your voice heard.90% of internet friendly citizens around the globe use online channels tocompare and find the best prices of a product beforepurchasing it. This is what Branding is coming down to, Differentiation - as in the actual sense, no other medium offers the power to analyse and educate yourself about the differences betweencompeting brands as much as the online consortium does. So, when was the last time you walked into a Mall and received a Bluetooth message on your mobile? Mobile media is another such channel which was left underutilized during the past two years. Oncontrary, mobile media has attracted manyyoungsters to adapt to the new platform as the tech savvy youth find it to be a value added service which is being offered by companies. It would beinteresting to know that a vast majority ofpeople who receive such communication are likely toentertain these messages by accepting them as most of them offer information for free. With new age software being developed for smartphones like“Oxicash”, users now have more power given to them, right at their fingertips. So much for competition on the digital front -Microsoft launched its much publicised searchengine “Bing” in 2009 and hoped to bring in a big duel with Google, but did you ever realize that you can be taken to another search engine with help of one? Try “Googling” Bing or try to search for “Google” on Excite and so on, it’s as simple as that to switch. Then what’s the scope of competition on such a platform one might wonder, well virtually

all of them offer the same services, none greater, none lesser and surprisingly all of it seems to go back to one single channel – the World Wide Web. The real competition exists in the race to cast moreimpressions on as many users as possible. The last decade saw a great uprising of the digital era but ladies and gentlemen, you haven’t seen anything yet. Expect bigger things from this platform in the coming years as both marketers and consumers slowly start realizing its potential and start shifting focus to this new side of the world.

Appreciation Mail for PRAD Times:

I am very impressed with the contents of the News letter and also the happenings at SIMC Bangalore.Wish I was there to witness theseinteresting events.

“Buzz” is about the excitement around brands as seen from the point of view of the consumers. In other words, it is the story of brands that the users enjoy talking about. Just as conversation ebbs and flows, so does interest in a brand. Facebbok tops the list in this category followed by Blackberry and Tata Docomo. The most striking aspect of this year's poll is the number of new brands that have entered the list - and that too at the very top. In fact, four of the five top brands weren't even in the 2010 shortlist: BlackBerry, Tata Docomo, Volkswagen and Micromax. The other trend is the domination of the upper echelons by brands from the mobile space. The report clearly shows that brands like Facebook and Blackeberry are here to stay and would surely take the majority of the share of attention as well as the share of wallet in days to come.
