Praise of God’s Faithfulness Psalm 92:1-15, 1. It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, 2. to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, 3. to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. 4. For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. 5. How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! 6. The senseless man does not know, fools do not understand, 7. that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. 8. But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. 9. For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. 10. You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. 11. My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. 12. The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13. planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. 14. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green,

15. proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." NIV

Introduction:

I. The title indicates that this psalm came to be used in connection with Israel’s Sabbath observances.

A. The content suggests things that Israel needed to reflect upon frequently.

B. The use of the psalm was probably attracted by the theme, rather than the psalm having been written for the express purpose of celebrating the Sabbath.

II. The psalm combines features of a praise hymn (Psalm 92:1-9, 12-15) and a psalm of thanksgiving (Psalm 92:10-11)

A. Psalm 92:1-9, It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! The senseless man does not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. NIV B. Psalm 92: 10-11, You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. My eyes

have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. NIV

C. Psalm 92: 12-15, The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." NIV D. This is a pattern frequently followed in praise hymns whereby the psalmist enlarges upon God’s special deliverance of him as a person, then turns the psalm into a national hymn of praise for all God’s wonderful works.

1. This pattern reveals the keen spiritual insight of the psalmist, who sees in particular saving acts of the Lord evidence of His constant loyalty to His people.

Commentary:

CONSTANT PRAISE OF GOD Psalm 92:1-4, It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. NIV I. Each couplet in this paragraph employs synonymous parallelism so that a single thought is contained in each verse.

Psalm 92:1-2, It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, NIV I. It is good to constantly thank the Lord and praise him “in the morning” and “by night”.

A. These phrases lay stress on the frequency of such activities and may possibly be an allusion to the burnt offering made every morning and evening by the priests at the temple (Ex. 29:38-42; Num. 28:1-8)

1. Exodus 29: 38-42, "This is what you are to offer on the altar regularly each day: two lambs a year old. Offer one in the morning and the other at twilight. With the first lamb offer a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hint of oil from pressed olives, and a quarter of a hint of wine as a drink offering. Sacrifice the other lamb at twilight with the same grain offering and its drink offering as in the morning a pleasing aroma, an offering made to the LORD by fire. "For the generations to come this burnt offering is to be made regularly at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD. There I will meet you and speak to you; NIV

2. Numbers 28:1-8, The LORD said to Moses, "Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: 'See that you present to me at the appointed time the food for my offerings made by fire, as an aroma pleasing to me.' Say to them: 'This is the offering made by fire that you are to present to the LORD : two lambs a year

old without defect, as a regular burnt offering each day. Prepare one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight, together with a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil from pressed olives. This is the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai as a pleasing aroma, an offering made to the LORD by fire. The accompanying drink offering is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the LORD at the sanctuary. Prepare the second lamb at twilight, along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you prepare in the morning. This is an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. NIV

B. Praises accompanied those sacrifices, at least from David’s day forward (1 Chron. 16:1-6, 37-41).

1. 1 Chronicles 16: 1-6, They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to make petition, to give thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel: Asaph was the chief, Zechariah second, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres

and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God. NIV

2. 1 Chronicles 16:37-41, David left Asaph and his

associates before the ark of the covenant of the LORD to minister there regularly, according to each day's requirements. He also left Obed-Edom and his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah, were gatekeepers. David left Zadok the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the LORD at the high place in Gibeon to present burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law of the LORD, which he had given Israel. With them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the LORD, "for his love endures forever." NIV

C. God is to be praised for His “love” (covenant loyalty) and His “Faithfulness” to Israel.

Note: For the names “Lord” and “Most High”, see the comments on Psalm 91:1-2, He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

Psalm 92:3-4, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. NIV

I. God is pleased with our gratitude (Psalm 69:29-31) and such gratitude helps us to be “glad” because of God’s works.

A. Psalm 69:29-31, I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me. I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. NIV

The Dullness of the Stupid

Psalm 92:5-9, How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! The senseless man does not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. NIV

Psalm 92:5, How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! NIV

I. Not only is the psalmist filled with gladness as he reflects upon God’s works (Psalm 92:4), but he is led into deeper reverence as he think of the great mind of God that produced and maintains the universe.

A. Psalm 92:4, For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. NIV

Psalm 92:6, The senseless man does not know, fools do not understand, NIV I. But “the senseless man”, ballar, one who is brutish like an animal, and “fools”, kesil, intellectual dullards “do not understand.”

A. The psalmist is not referring to one who is incapable of

knowing, but to one who refuses to exercise his mental and spiritual capabilities.

B. Psalm 92:6 employs synonymous parallelism, so that senseless” and “fools” are synonyms, as are “know” and “understand”.

II. The word “this” (RSV), in its usage in the Old Testament, may refer to what follows (Gen. 42:18; 43:11; etc.), or it may look back to what precedes (Ps. 78:32, Isa. 5:25; 9:12,17, 21; 10:4; Jer. 3:10; etc.).

A. Genesis 42:18, On the third day, Joseph said to them, "Do this and you will live, for I fear God: NIV

B. Genesis 43:11, Then their father Israel said to them,

"If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift—a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. NIV

C. Psalm 78:32, In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;

in spite of his wonders, they did not believe. NIV

D. Isaiah 5:25, Therefore the LORD's anger burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake, and the dead bodies are like refuse in the streets. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. NIV

E. Isaiah 9:12, 17, 21, Arameans from the east and

Philistines from the west have devoured Israel with

open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men, nor will he pity the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly and wicked, every mouth speaks vileness. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh; together they will turn against Judah. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. NIV

F. Isaiah 10:4, Nothing will remain but to cringe among

the captives or fall among the slain. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. NIV

G. Jeremiah 3:10, In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister

Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense," declares the LORD. NIV

Psalm 92:7, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. NIV I. The insertion of the word “that” in our text results from the assumption that the word “this” in Ps. 92:6 (RSV) points forward.

A. According to this interpretation, the psalmist is saying that the dullard does not properly reflect upon the brief duration of the prosperity of the wicked.

B. It is possible, however, that the psalmist meant to say that

the dullard does not properly reflect upon God’s greatness as seen in His creation (Ps. 92:5; cf. “when”, Ps. 92:7 (KJV).

1. Psalm 92:5, How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! NIV 2. Psalm 92:7, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. NIV

II. A frequent theme in the Old Testament is that the wicked may prosper for a time, but eventually they will get their just deserts in the form of calamity resulting from divine visitation.

Psalm 92:8-9, But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. NIV

I. Since God is “exalted forever”, that is, in complete control of His universe, His “enemies will perish”.

Deliverance of the Psalmist

Psalm 92:10-11, You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. NIV

Psalm 92:10, You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. NIV

I. “Horn” is a symbol of strength.

II. The “fine oils” were used on festive occasions as symbols of gladness (Ps. 23:5; 45:7) also as part of the occasions as symbols of gladness (Ps. 23:5; 45:7), also as part of the priestly healing ceremony for one who had been afflicted with leprosy (Lev. 14;10-20), and for general medicinal purposes (Isa. 1:6).

A. Psalm 23:5, You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. NIV

B. Psalm 45:7, You love righteousness and hate

wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. NIV

C. Leviticus 14:10-20, "On the eighth day he must bring

two male lambs and one ewe lamb a year old, each without defect, along with three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering, and one log of oil. The priest who pronounces him clean shall present both the one to be cleansed and his offerings before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. "Then the priest is to take one of the male lambs and offer it as a guilt offering, along with the log of oil; he shall wave them before the LORD as a wave offering. He is to slaughter the lamb in the holy place where the sin offering and the burnt offering are slaughtered. Like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest; it is most holy. The priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. The priest shall then take some of the log of oil, pour it in the palm of his own left hand, dip his right forefinger into the oil in his palm, and with his finger sprinkle some of it before the LORD seven times. The priest is to put some of the oil remaining in his palm on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering. The rest of the oil in his palm the priest shall

put on the head of the one to be cleansed and make atonement for him before the LORD. "Then the priest is to sacrifice the sin offering and make atonement for the one to be cleansed from his uncleanness. After that, the priest shall slaughter the burnt offering 20 and offer it on the altar, together with the grain offering, and make atonement for him, and he will be clean. NIV

D. Isaiah 1:6, From the sole of your foot to the top of your

head there is no soundness—only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil. NIV

III. It is not clear in what sense the psalmist alludes to his anointing.

A. Since Psalm 92:7 focuses attention on the downfall of his enemies, he apparently is figuratively describing the joy that he felt when God vindicated and delivered him. NIV

Psalm 92:11, My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. NIV I. Historical continuity is employed here.

A. Since God has delivered him in the past, he will continue to do so.

B. The concept of community solidarity is also involved, as

the psalmist applies the lesson to the entire worshipping community. (Ps. 92:12-15).

1. Psalm 92:12-15, The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." NIV

Application: I Unlike Psalm 89, in which there is confusion over God’s constant goodness and faithfulness, Psalm 92 is consistent in believing that God blesses the righteous and destroys the wicked.

A. Psalm 89:1-52, I will sing of the LORD's great love forever; with my mouthI will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself. You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, 'I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.' "Selah The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them. You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. You created

the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name. Your arm is endued with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness. For you are their glory and strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn. Indeed, our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said: "I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have exalted a young man from among the people. I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him. My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him. No enemy will subject him to tribute; no wicked man will oppress him. I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries. My faithful love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted. I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.' I will also appoint him my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure. "If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes, if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands, I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness— and I will not lie to David- that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun; it will be established forever like the

moon, the faithful witness in the sky." Selah But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one. You have renounced the covenant with your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust. You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins. All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice. You have turned back the edge of his sword and have not supported him in battle. You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground. You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with a mantle of shame. Selah How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all men! What man can live and not see death, or save himself from the power of the grave? Selah O Lord, where is your former great love, which in your faithfulness you swore to David? Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations, the taunts with which your enemies have mocked, O LORD, with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one. Praise be to the LORD forever! Amen and Amen. NIV

Psalm 92: 1-15, It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." NIV

B. God allowed man to speak according to his limited understanding, but the Psalms as a whole correct any misunderstandings.

1. These corrections are based on a steadfast trust in the goodness of God, even though human sight may fail to see the result of God’s just judgement. 2. We must learn to do the same.

THE PROSPERITY OF THE RIGHTEOUS

Psalm 92:12-15, The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." NIV

I. The “palm tree” is doubtless the date palm that is known for its fruitfulness and durability. II. The “cedar” was known for its stateliness, especially the majestic cedars of Lebanon. Psalm 92:13, planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. NIV I. “The house of the Lord” and “the courts of our God” are synonymous expressions. II. The antecedent of the pronouns in Ps. 92:13 and 14 is “the righteous” of Ps. 92:12.

A. Psalm 92:12-14, The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, NIV

III. This verse employs a metaphor whereby the lives of the priests who live at the temple are considered representative of all Israel under God (cf. Ps. 84)

A. Psalm 84:1-12, How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Selah Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. As they pass through the

Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion. Hear my prayer, O LORD God Almighty; listen to me, O God of Jacob. Selah Look upon our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you. NIV

Psalm 92:14, They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, I. In contrast to the wicked that are doomed to destruction (Ps. 92:7-8), the righteous “will still bear fruit in old age” (cf. 2 Cor. 4:16-18).

A. Psalm 92:7-8, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. NIV

B. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, Therefore we do not lose heart.

Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. NIV

Psalm 92:15, proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." NIV

I. All these blessings demonstrate that “the Lord is upright” and that “there is no unrighteousness in him”, that is, he blesses the righteous and punishes the wicked (cf. Ex. 20:5,6).

A. Exodus 20:5-6, You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments. NIV

Application: I. Unlike Psalm 89, in which there is confusion concerning God’s faithfulness, Psalm 92 expresses a constant trust in God’s goodness.

A. The psalmist therefore believes that God will bless the righteous and destroy the wicked, even though present circumstances may seem to indicate otherwise.

B. We must learn to do the same.
