Background:

Ongole District came into existence on 02-02-1970 with the blending of parts

of areas from Kurnool, Guntur and Nellore Districts. Markapur Division from Kurnool

District, Kandukur Division from Nellore District and Ongole Division from Guntur

District were drawn and constituted into this new District. It was subsequently

named after the patriot and hero among the freedom fighters , late Sri Tanguturi

"Prakascam Panthulu" "Andhra Kesari"(Lion of Andhra) to cherish his fond memory.

It was accordingly renamed as Prakasam District in the year 1972.

The Geographical topographic, demographic and other socio economic aspects

of Prakasam District are delineated hereunder.

AGRICULTURE

Agriculture is the backbone of the District's economy and major chunk of the

working population depend on Agriculture. The major crops grown are tobacco,

paddy, groundnut ,cotton, and pulses etc.

At present there are 5 Spinning Mills with an installed capacity of 120000

Spindles in between Martur and Ongole along side N.H.5. Further there is a scope

for establishing Cotton ginning, spinning mills and textile units. Since irrigation

facilities improved in the District there is a scope for further growth of cotton

cultivation.

HORTICULTURE

The following are the major Horticulture produce from the District. Most of

the produce being exported.

There are 15 Nos of Cold Storage proposals under various stages of

implementation in addition to the existing 5 Cold storages of average capacity of

5,000 Tons each. Hence there is ample scope for establilshing fruit canning /

processing units in the areas of Singarayakonda, Markapur and Kanigiri.

FORESTS

The District is having an extent of forest land of 11.00 lakh acres which

constitutes 28% of the total geographical area of the District. In addition to the

above, the following plantations like Subabul, Eucalyptus and Casurina is grown in

an extent of 2.05 lakh acres. Hence there is an ample scope for starting medium

scale paper manufacturing unit.

MINERALS

The District is endowed with Minerals like Iron Ore, Slate, Silica Sand,

Barytes, Granite, Quartz and Building stone, Lime Kankar etc. There is good demand

for Barytes, Slate and Granite in foreign countries. Silica Sand and Quartz have got

demand in industrial sector.

GRANITE

Vast deposits of granites are available in the district. The World famous Black

Galaxy granite deposits available in an extent of 8.60 Million Cubic Mtrs in

Chimakurthy, R.L.Puram and Budawada areas. Apart from the above, there are

plenty of deposits of colour granite about 13.86 Million Cubic Mtrs extended in an

extent of 72 Hectares in the district, Colour granite are available in Uppumagulur,

Elchuru, Darsi, Kanigiri, Addanki etc., And also Black Pearl granite reserves are

available to an extent of .0.435 Million Cubic Mtrs.

LEATHER RESOURCES

About 3.00 Lakhs Animal skins and hides are being exported every year to

Chennai and Hyderabad for processing and sales to Foreign Country. Hence there is

good scope for starting leather tanning and leather goods manufacturing units.

MILK CHILLING

There are 18 Milk processing units existing in the District and 5 more units

are coming up to utilize the abundant milk available in the district.

MARINE RESOURCES

Development of Brackish water prawn culture made good progress in the

coastal mandals of Chirala, Vetapalem, Chinaganjam, , Naguluppalapadu, Ongole,

Kothapatnam,Tangutur Singarayakonda, Ulavapadu and Gudlur. Hence there is good

scope for establishment Sea food processing industry.

Salt production is going on in the extent of 2000 acres of Govt. and private

lands. As such there is scope for manufacturing of iodized salt units in the District.

TOURISM

The District is having coastal line of nearly 100 K.Ms. The Tourism

Development Corporation has already proposing resorts at the places like

Ramayapatnam, Pakala, Ethamukkala, Kothapatnam, and Odarevu. Further there is

a scope for setting up of resorts in private sector also.

Infrastructure: Existing Industrial Estates/Industrial Developmental Areas. There are six Indl. Estates in the District located at Ongole, Markapur,

Giddalur, Growth Centre, Ongole, Autonagar Ongole, Wood Complex, Ongole.

Almost all plots, sheds, were developed and are also being allotted to the

4. Forest produce based Industries

The main forest produce is timber, Fire wood, Bamboo, Beedi leaves and

others. Some Small Scale units may be encouraged to exploit the produce of

forest. Viz Gum, Nuts etc. Pasteurization of honey , soap nut powder , Gum

processing unit leaf plates etc. may also be encouraged in the district.

5. Textile Based Industries

There are 90,000 weavers in the district .They are concentrated in and

around Chirala area. Readymade garments, Knitted wear, Textile processing,

Low count yarn dyeing and processing, Hosiery units have a good scope.

6. Sericulture based Industries

Sericulture is a non traditional activity in the district. There is scope in

Markapur and Giddalur areas for establishing sillk twisting and reeling units as

the mulberry plantation is concentrated mainly in the above areas.

7. Marine Based Industries

The District has 102Kms length of coast line of Bay of Bengal. There are no.

of fishing villages with active fishermen. Inland and marine fish & prawn

production is approximately 15,000 MTs/Year. Cold storage plants at

Vodarevu or Chinaganjam or Singarayakonda have good scope. There is

scope for establishing Ice Plants; Fish Feed prawn feed Fish & Prawn

processing units.
