Is art intimidating?I think about this a lot. After all, it is our mission to make art accessible. So what are we up against? Why do so many find art an intimidating concept?

For starters, there’s something personal at stake. As both maker and viewer, a certain vulnerability is required, a willingness to apply your unique personal perspective to the engagement. Call it fear of judgment, fear of failure, or fear of the unknown, it can be scary to put yourself on the line in any context. Much easier to avoid it, even if it means you might be missing something really great.

Could there also be a larger perception problem? For centuries art has been upheld as a critical component of an advanced culture. In that sense, it is perceived with elevated regard. Does this “high culture” status have unintended consequences? Does it inadvertently exclude a large portion of the population who might think that art is not for them?

This much is clear to me: whether deterred by cultural percep-tion or personal fears, the barriers to participating as makers or viewers are merely illusions. And we, as art enthusiasts, are all responsible for dispelling the myths and promoting the truth: that there’s a way for everyone to engage in art.

I’m sure we can all think of someone in our personal networks who has no present engagement with art. So the next time you go to an exhibit, enjoy an artwalk, or take a class at Pratt, I challenge you to invite that person along. Let’s tear down the walls and build a new construct into which everyone is invited and no one need fear; maybe together we can change the paradigm, one person at a time.

Food for thought!

Cheers,

Steve Galatro Executive Director

Master Artist Darryl Nelson BY LISA GEERTSEN

MASTER ARTIST

FORGED ANIMAL HEADSDarryl Nelson • Class #4790FRI–SUN 9:30AM–5:30PM 9/26–9/283 SESSIONS • CLASS FEE: $315 • SUPPLY FEE: $45

E V E N T SFALL

Darryl Nelson has been a self employed blacksmith since 1972. With a background in horseshoeing and ornamental architectural work, he began teaching and demonstrating to the public in 1979. He is the owner of Fire Mountain Forge (1978) and Meridian Forge Blacksmithing School (2003), both located in the foothills of Mt. Rainier in Eatonville, WA.

Darryl’s architectural work is recognized as being made in the Cascadian style. “Cascadian ironwork is medieval craftsman style, and that’s the way I describe my work – it adds to the craftsman style, a rougher finish and line that is less clean. Adze marks remain, chamfering remains.” ~Darryl Nelson in an interview with the Portland Monthly

As the third generation blacksmith for Timberline Lodge, Darryl restores the existing metalwork as well as furnish-ing the lodge with new items that fit in seamlessly to the original WPA era style. While the designs in the lodge need to strictly conform to the guidelines given by its curators and caretakers, the Cascadian style flows through the metalwork in Government camp with the added creativity of Darryl’s personal touch. The ram’s head is a signature symbol of the lodge but it is not the only hot sculpted creature to be found on the mountain, a visitor can explore the lodge and Silcox Hut to find many more creatures sculpted in iron.

While most of Darryl’s work is architectural, the hot sculpted animal head is what he’s become so well known for. Some of the best examples are on the large planter urns along Second Ave. in downtown Seattle across the street from the Seattle Art Museum. He has been demonstrating and teaching this technique across the country for numerous years. His dedication to education and the promotion of the art of blacksmithing has been, and continues to be, instrumental to the community of artist blacksmiths in the Seattle area and the Pacific Northwest. The majority of smiths here, including all of our blacksmithing instructors here at Pratt, have spent a good portion of time working for Darryl or taking as many of his workshops as possible. This is just one of the reasons we are excited to have this Master Artist in our blacksmithing studio.

Pratt offers fully equipped professional studios for you to rent and work in.

Leave all the equipment maintenance to us! All you have to bring is your creativity.

We offer an inviting place for artists to work independently in a community environment.

Fuel your creativity – meet like-minded artists, exchange ideas and get inspired at Pratt.

STEVE just became a renter, after taking 3 classes in the Metal Fabrication Studio he now feels comfortable working on his own.

“I am excited about experi-menting on my own work. Pratt has such a great commu-nity of artists, I am looking forward to being part of it.”

“I love looking across the room and seeing a new technique and thinking ‘I should learn to do that!’ I am always finding new things to incorporate in my work.”

JULES has been renting at Pratt for years. She loves the camaraderie she and her fellow printmakers have developed.

As a working artist, renting at Pratt is the only way to go. I used to rent a studio space, but it was just too expensive to purchase and maintain all the equipment. Here, I just show up. All of the equipment is maintained and I pay just one price.

@Pratt Magazine’s, Cynthia Hibbard recently sat down with Romson Regarde Bustillo to discuss his work and his involvement with Pratt.

From his first interaction with Pratt more than 20 years ago, to his first Pratt class--aided by tuition assistance--until today, Romson Bustillo has never left Pratt’s orbit. He has built both his skills and his career here, making invaluable connections and mentorships along the way. These days he continues to cycle through Pratt as both a print instruc-tor and a practicing artist who regularly uses the facilities.

Bustillo has found teaching to be a two-way inspiration incubator that keeps his ideas spinning. He’s also constantly gratified by new students’ ‘ah-ha’ moments of understanding that what they’ve made came from something deep inside them. “I wish I could share this more eloquently with more and more people,” he said.

When he’s immersed in his own work, Bustillo can be seen late at night in the print studio, headphones in place, intensely concentrating on his project of the moment. Recently, he produced nearly all of the 34 vibrantly patterned pieces on display

through September 28 at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art at Pratt. His BIMA show, Dugay Na, means “no longer new” or “a long time now” in the Mindanao Bisaya/Cebuano language of the Philippines, from which Bustillo immigrated at age nine, when his family joined relatives living in Columbia City.

Soon, Bustillo will be back in the studio finishing work for a 4Culture show that opens the first Thursday in October.

Bustillo credits the guidance of former Pratt Executive Director Greg Robinson, now BIMA’s executive director, in helping him refine his work over the years so that “no longer new” has personal relevance. It’s difficult for him to pinpoint the length of that association. “I feel like Pratt has always been part of my life,” he said. “So the dates are a little bit confusing.”

@PM: What do you think it is about Pratt that allows inexperienced students to mingle with practicing artists and still feel accepted?

RB: It’s the culture. This is the place for anyone to make art, no matter what the student’s age or skill level. Pratt provides both a welcoming atmosphere and a dedication to producing fine art. New students will always be accepted and encouraged. They’ll also learn from their instructors that this is the place where we make beautiful objects or objects that make state-ments. It’s a center where people are evolving and thinking about what they’re making.

@PM: But what would you say to someone who is interested in a class but is too intimidated to sign up due to lack of experience?

RB: I’d say it’s all right to be afraid. I myself am sometimes nervous to take new classes, and not just at Pratt. I tell my students that they need to find the love. If they feel in their hearts that they have the capacity to be creative and to make art, this place will help them.

@PM: How well do you think this concept of mixing beginners with skilled artists works at Pratt?

RB: It works well. Of course there are certain classes where there is a require-ment for one to have some

basic knowledge and that’s primarily for safety. One should know how to oper-ate the press or, in case of the hot shop, work with the furnace. We do have entry, mid-level and advanced classes that enable people to learn the equipment fairly easily so they can move on to take other classes in those disciplines.

@PM: Don’t you teach a class where beginners can get involved?

RB: I do. I teach a mixed media printmaking class sometimes referred to as “alternative surfaces.” Dur-ing my travels I’ve encoun-tered printmakers who have exposed me to other print-making techniques than

the ones we normally think of. I’ve developed a class teaching these methods, often with found supplies, non-toxic processes, and without the use of the press. These are techniques any-one is capable of learning. I get both beginners and peo-ple who have already taken a number of other printmak-ing classes at Pratt, which is a good thing, because they have a foundation of knowledge that contributes to everyone’s experience.

@PM: What interests you in printing with found objects?

RB: I like the practice of being green as much as possible, and of using what you have—not letting the

costs of supplies be an ob-stacle—and then of thinking about what repurposing actually means. What’s the history of things? I’ve had connections with pieces of wood from the back alleys of studios where I’ve worked in Barcelona, with a piece of fabric from a residency at the James Washington Foundation in Seattle, and with some cardboard left over at Pratt.

@PM: What is special about the Pratt print lab?

RB: The facility itself is unique in this city. Period. Of course there are the ac-tual machines, equipment and the accessibility. But I have to say that for me it’s the camaraderie. You come in contact with practicing artists in different phases of their growth and profession. I’m a studio artist so I spend a lot of time at Pratt but I don’t claim it for myself. It’s

a place where you can have a dialog with the press, the ink and with other artists. It has a way of attracting people who are really look-ing to express themselves. It spawns creativity. Here people will find the tools and techniques to develop a vision, if not actually produce that vision.

@PM: You talk about Pratt being a community. How has being a part of that community helped your career?

RB: The word ‘career’ is interesting in that I feel very strongly that art is something I do and art supports me to a healthy degree. I have to say the relationships I’ve built at Pratt have helped form how I see myself as an artist and a creative person. Pratt has also given me a lot of tangible support. I know a lot about printmaking but

I don’t’ know everything. Kerstin Graudins, one of the instructors has, for instance, helped me perfect my silk screening techniques. Kamla Kakaria, the print-making/painting/drawing studio manager, early on instructed me on working with wax.

@PM: What is the focus of your own work now?

RB: I would say the one constant for me is discovery. I’ve been practicing art for almost 40 years now and I say that because I feel like I’ve been at it since day one with a crayon or a pencil in my hand. Since my involve-ment with Pratt, printing has been my number one focus and the way I feel most comfortable exploring dif-ferent ideas, techniques and medias that are constantly evolving. The majority of my work has been fairly consistently on paper. And the pieces continue to expand—vertically and horizontally.

@PM: You’re known for producing in volume. Why is that?

RB: Yes and no. I do produce a large amount of work but then everything gets put together as one or two pieces. In that way I’m a collage artist who makes all the things that I collage, primarily through printmak-ing. You’ll notice at the BIMA show that the largest

piece—we measured it at 11 feet long—is composed of three original pieces.

@PM: Are your images re-flective of the places you’ve been? They’re not exceed-ingly Filipino, are they?

RB: No. But you would have to say that that part of me is coded. I was fortu-nate to come from a part of the Philippines that was incredibly diverse so I feel strongly that exposure to different aesthetics of the culture came to America with me. You can see some reflections in my work—like curvilinear, mosque-like or gigantic, cathedral-like im-ages. Also, houses on stilts. The other major influence

of the region, I would say, is fabric. Overall, I think the kind of artist I am is more reflective of the region I grew up in, which is the Northwest.

@PM: In summation, what is it you most appreciate about Pratt?

RB: There’s a reason it’s called Pratt Fine Arts Cen-ter. It’s because the quality of the art instruction com-ing out of it is exceptional. Pratt people are producing beautiful, contemporary work and thought-provok-ing art. Pratt cultivated me as an artist. It’s a place that can also contribute to you as a creative person. So go for it!
