Defining Praxis “A process by which a theory,

lesson, or skill is enacted, practiced, embodied, or realized” – Wikipedia

“Reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it." Through praxis, oppressed people can acquire a critical awareness of their own condition, and, with their allies, struggle for liberation.” – Paulo Freire

Praxis a la Mujerista

• Praxis is “critical reflective action based on an analysis of historical reality perceived through of an option for and a commitment to the liberation of Latinas” – Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz

• “Praxis must not be equated with practice” a blend of intellectual reflection and consistent action.

• Grounded in the experience of the community.

• Mujerista praxis: captured in the typical response to “how are you” with: “ahi, en la lucha,” - there, in the struggle.

Liberative Praxis

Liberation is not a conceptual exercise but grounded in an historical reality.

It critiques and denounces oppressive structures.

Is critically introspective. Does not romanticize its own cultural context or its own theological community.

Accepts the theological contribution of the grassroot people.

Lived Experience as the primary source of mujerista theology

• Lived experience – experiences that are intentionally being lived. • Experiences that we reflect,

examine and act on.

• The development of moral agency occurs through this primary source.

• A critique of an “objective” moral and theological source: truth is intentionally experienced not rationally theorized.

Grassroot Theologians Mujerista theologians

must look towards the grassroot community and their experience of God.

“Who God is and what God is like is to be found in our struggle for survival and justice.”
