They were able to share the potential they saw in him, and they confirmed that they are here to support him. He softly replied, “This is a first.” Please pray that he will continue to rise above his past and current situation, that others will continue to encourage him, and that he will continue to make choices to reach his full potential.

Second Chances

The following story includes excerpts from a letter we recently received from a former client. Through your partnership with Water Street, you help to change lives, one at a time.

November 1, 2010, I was dropped off by my parents at the Water Street Mission. I had a bag of clothes, a jacket and an attitude. And so begins the journey of a Water Street Mission client.

I met with two counselors the first day, and we talked about my options at the Mission and for my future. I did not sleep well that first night in the Shelter. This was all new to me, and for the first time in my life I was kind of worried.

Over the next few weeks, I enrolled in the Mission’s Life Recovery Program and made some friends. In August of 2011, I thought I had learned all I needed to know. I started to go back to my old ways, and l

ended up leaving the Mission without completing the program.

A few months later, I needed more help and came back to the Mission again. I was pretty much met with open arms, something I did not expect. While I was only there for three days, I want you to know that those three days weren’t all for nothing. You see, I was humbled that you accepted me back and gave me a chance to start over. I want to thank you for believing in me and giving me a second chance.

This is why I am writing to you. I never said good bye or thank you when I left, but I am saying that now. I want you to know that a friend helped me get a job and got an apartment with me, because he had seen how I had changed over time with the help of the Mission.

I worked very hard at my new job, and my boss noticed. He asked why

I worked so hard even though I didn’t make much money. I shared my story with him, telling him about my time at the Mission and how you and my friend believed in me. Currently I am a team trainer. Over the next 8 weeks, I will be training to be a shift manager.

Thank you for the life lessons you have taught me. I strongly believe I am where I am today because of the Mission.
