Desiring Patience - Cont’d. on Page 2
There are those who, rather than working to achieve
goals, spend most of their time looking for shortcuts. Unwilling
to accept the principles and processes that lead to the goal, these
folks are always angling for some advantage that will eliminate
the journey and get them to the end of the rainbow right now.
For example; some students, would like to know their
subject matter without studying. Some athletes would like to win
the trophy without practicing. Some businessmen would like to
get rich without risking the investment of their money. Some
farmers would like to reap the harvest without working the field.
Some soldiers would like to win the war without fighting the bat-
tle.
And let’s face it, some Christians, would like to be spiri-
tually mature without going through the process of spiritual
growth.
In reality, however, those who would be mature in God’s
eyes must pass through some difficult stages. We’re a long way
from where we need to be, and the destination can’t be reached
without going the distance. It’s foolish (and dangerous) to try.
But here is the point: we should not only tolerate the
process of growth; we should embrace it willingly, gratefully, and
even joyfully. The process of spiritual growth involves some pain
and difficulty. But James says that we are to “count it all joy
when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your
faith produces patience.” The pain is not pleasant, but it produces
something that is very pleasant, and for that reason we should
embrace the process with joy. It is not too much to say that we
should desire the process. We desire it because we desire what it
leads to, and we are grateful for the way in which God has
deemed it best for us to get there.
It is sad to see a person who does nothing more than
put up with today while he frantically looks for some shortcut
to tomorrow. How foolish. Today is how we get to tomorrow!
And if today is difficult, as it often will be in this world, we
ought to do more than tolerate it. We ought to take a big bite of
it and give thanks to God for it.

All Out My Minister friend sent this to me, asking do other ministers catch them-
selves in the same point in their lives. I said, Yes, but I think all Christians from
time to time catch ourselves in this position. In the fast-paced world of going and
going, do you take time to fill up. Here is what he sent me. As the deer pants for
streams of water, o my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the
living God. When can I go, and meet with God? –Psalm 42:1-2 It had been a busy
day. In fact, it had been a busy week. On my way home, I had decided to stop by
the hospital to visit my sister who was working the night shift. I left the hospital just
before midnight, ready to crawl into bed. I couldn’t get home fast enough. It wasn’t
more than fifteen minutes after leaving that my power steering went out on the free-
way in Los Angeles. My heart sank; I knew the problem. I had run out of gas.
Luckily, I was able to coast off at an exit, but I only had enough “oomph” to reach a
side street. I was stuck. I was so frustrated with myself. How could I have let this
happen? All day, my warning light had beckoned. But I had been too busy, too pre-
occupied, to actually stop and fill up. I just kept driving and eventually forgot I even
needed gas. Sometimes I do the same thing with God that I did that day with my car.
I stop paying attention, or get too busy to fill up, and the next thing I know, I’m
stranded and helpless. What’s my reaction then? I cry out for God and beg for Him
to come to my rescue. Perhaps I wouldn’t need to be rescued so often if I would al-
ways put God first and make filling up my top priority. Are you going too fast?
Have you forgotten to fill up your true gas tank, your source of life, your fuel? The
psalmist likens himself to a deer in this passage who thirsts for water. A deer de-
pends on water for survival. Our soul is in the same position. Our soul needs to be
filled up by the Living God, or it will be dehydrated, weak, and eventually die. In
the book of John, a story is found about a woman who meets Jesus at a well. Jesus
offers her living water. He offers her Himself, the Messiah. We would never dream
of depriving our own bodies of food or water, so why is it so easy to neglect our
souls and not give them the nourishment they need? It is Jesus Christ and His Living
Word that can satisfy your hunger and thirst. This week I challenge us all to find
ways to fill up our gas tank and try to not let it get down to the caution light. Hope
this article helps you on your walk this week. Sorry a little long this week. Todd
