ORDER OF SERVICE

for Week BeGiNNiNG JaNuary 11, 2016

Monday: Read the honest confession of Micah 7:8-9. Of the topics covered yesterday (whether “cheap grace,” legalism, “becoming grace,” or the mission of grace), which resonat-ed with you most? How would 2016 be different for you or our church if you believed or applied what you heard?

Tuesday: Read Rom. 1:13-17 with 1 Cor. 15:1-4. In both of these passages Paul desires to remind believers of the gospel of God’s grace. Other than sharing our faith clearly, why would believers need to be reminded of the gospel? Why does author Jerry Bridges exhort us to “preach the gospel to ourselves daily?” What does it look like when a disciple forgets this or when a person isn’t taught key Gospel truths ?

Wednesday: Notice the related terms “righteousness” and “justified” as you read Rom. 3:21-27. Righteousness is that which God is—he is uncompromising in his holiness and determination to punish sin. Righteousness in Scripture is also that which God requires—no one enters a relationship with him or heaven some day without a perfect life. So far this doesn’t sound like very good news. But the Bible also teaches us that righteousness is that which God provides—our sin is taken away and we are given the very righteousness of Christ. Rom. 3:24-25 says we are justified (declared righteous and innocent of all charges) because of our faith in Christ. What difference would believing this aspect of the gospel make in your daily approach to God? Why is this fuel for worship?

Thursday: Read Rom. 3:21-27 again noticing the word “propitiation” (some translations say “sacrifice of atonement”). God the Father, motivated solely by his love and glory, sent His Son Jesus to be our propitiation— meaning that all the wrath of God due to our sin was exhausted on Jesus at the cross. There is no wrath or punishment left for the believer. Our holy, righteous God didn’t ignore our sin; he punished to the fullest extent of the Law... on Christ. How does this truth humble you? How does it exalt Jesus in your mind?

Friday: Read Rom. 3:21-27 once more. In light of our study this week, has your answer to the questions from Tuesday (above) changed? How or why?

Saturday: Read Titus 3:1-7. How is the gospel to affect the way we see others—whether believers or unbelievers? How does this passage illustrate “becoming grace?” Pray for tomorrow’s service.
