Fasting is as old as humanity: it was legislated in paradise. It was thefirst command that Adam received: You shall not eat from the tree ofthe knowledge of good and evil. You shall not eat legislates fasting andself-control. If Eve had fasted from the tree, we would not need thisfasting now. For those who are well have no need of a physician, butthose who are sick.We have been injured by sin; let us be healed byrepentance. But repentance is futile without fasting.

It is because we did not fast that we were banished from paradise. Solet us fast that we may return to it.

Fasting sends prayer up to heaven, as if it were its wings for theupward journey. Fasting is the expansion of households, the motherof health, the pedagogue of youth, an adornment for seniors, a goodcompanion on journeys, and a safe housemate for married couples.

Or do you not know that, just as in battle joining forces with oneside achieves the defeat of the other, so too the one who has joinedthe side of the flesh prevails over the spirit and the one who hasswitched to the side of the spirit enslaves the flesh? For these areopposed to each another. Hence if you wish to make your mind strong,subdue your flesh through fasting. Indeed, this is what the Apostlesays: the more the outer man wastes away, the more the inner man isrenewed. And:When I am weak, then I am strong.
