SAINT ANDREW
THE APOSTLE
PARISH
Prayer to Saint Andrew
the Apostle
O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were
the first to recognize and follow the
Lamb of God. With your friend Saint
John, you remained with Jesus for
that day, for your entire life, and now
throughout eternity. As you led your
brother Saint Peter to Christ and
many others after Him, draw us also
to Him. Teach us to lead others to
Christ solely out of love for Him and
dedication in His service. Help us to
learn the lesson of the cross and to
carry our daily crosses without
complaint so that they may carry us to
Jesus.
Amen.

St. Anthony & DePaul Second Collection
The Pittsburgh Diocese is home to two nationally recog-
nized educational programs for children with special needs:
St. Anthony school Programs and DePaul School for Hear-
ing and Speech (formerly known as the DePaul Institute). A
special collection to benefit these two organizations will be
taken up this weekend January 18 & 19, 2020 at all Masses.
The St. Anthony School Programs provides special edu-
cation to children with development delays and autism in
school within the Diocese and a college-age program locat-
ed on the Duquesne University campus. DePaul School for
Hearing and Speech teaches children who have moderate to
profound hearing loss how to listen, learn and speak, so that
these children may live without boundaries in our hearing
and speaking world.
Your donation will help St. Anthony School Programs
and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech to further their
goals of providing quality educational programs and ser-
vices for their students. Your support is critical. Your gener-
osity will help these organizations forever improve the loves
of their students and their families.
This collection will assist our Parish Share Assessment
Goal.
2ND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 19, 2020
THOUGHTS BY REV KEV
Ordinary Time does not mean we cannot celebrate! With most of our homes feeling empty
without the Christmas decorations, I would invite you to continue now with Mardi Gras.
These 6 weeks are an interlude known as ordinary-time. We have many celebrations to look
forward to. We are invited to share the joy of Christmas even with the bright colors of Mardi
Gras, these colors have the following meaning:
Purple - Justice
Green - Faith
Gold - Power
This is an extension of the gifts the Kings presented to Baby Jesus. Gold as Jesus was
acknowledged as a KING, the Myrrh presenting the struggles and pain Jesus would suffer for
JUSTICE and forgiveness for all and Frankincense which we still use to show our faith in ac-
tion as our prayers rise like incense to God!
RUMINATIONS BY FR. PAT

We are going to be looking for a few weeks at the Seven Deadly Sins. However, first we
need to be reminded of what Sin is. Sin is a breakage in our relationship with God and His
Church. The Catechism tells us: it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a
perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidar-
ity. Sin is when we choose something that goes against God and His Love; we choose our-
selves and isolate ourselves between God and the Church. Sin is thus "love of oneself even to
contempt of God." In this proud self-exaltation, sin is diametrically opposed to the obedience
of Jesus, which achieves our salvation.
Think about why God created the heavens and the earth. He was so full of Love, that He
wanted to share it. Think of a child who received from Santa what was really, really wanted.
Think of the joy that is felt. Also, think of the joy that wants to be shared. The child will tell
everyone what Santa brought.
Why share? Because we are social people. We need people in our lives. Because of God’s
love for the world, we are inclined to have people in our lives and to share who we are with
others. We become a family. We naturally want to share ourselves with others.
In our relationship with others, we mimic the relationship that we have with God. We live
in harmony. Sin is when we choose ourselves rather than others. We bend or break that rela-
tionship that was meant from the very beginning. Instead of turning outward, like God has for
us, we turn inward, like the devil, thinking only for ourselves.
We will be looking at the kinds of sins that divide us from God and His Church We will
then focus on the seven Deadly Sins, and also look at their equivalent virtues.

2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 19, 2020
FAITH FORMATION ~ FAMILY CONNECTION ~ KIDS CORNER
“Souper” Bowl Sunday Includes
Food Drive
For several years our Confirmation
Candidates have participated in
Souper Bowl Sunday. The Souper
Bowl of Caring program is a nationwide, ecumeni-
cal movement that equips and mobilizes youth to
positively impact their communities by collecting
money or food on or near Super Bowl weekend. One
-hundred percent of the collections are donated di-
rectly to the charity of the students’ choice.
This year, in addition to taking up a monetary
collection for their retreat day efforts the students
would like to include a Souper Bowl Food Drive for
our local Food Banks. Oftentimes in January and
February, following the generosity of so many peo-
ple during the Christmas Season, donations for our
local Food Banks begin to decline. The students
would like to highlight the continued need for food
donations over Souper Bowl weekend.
The “Souper Bowl of Caring” will be held on
the weekend of February 1 and February 2, 2020.
Please consider supporting our students’ efforts
by making a monetary contribution and a dona-
tion of food for the Food Bank. Look for more
information in upcoming bulletins about this collec-
tion and to hear about the ways that our students are
endeavoring to help others in the New Year.
Family Connection
The ministry of John the Baptist prepared for
and pointed to the ministry of Jesus. In a
similar way, our lives are to offer testimony
to who we know Jesus to be for us and for
the world. Jesus is the Lamb of God who
takes away the sins of the world. How does
the witness of our lives give testimony to the
reconciling presence of Christ?
As a family, identify as many titles for Jesus
as possible, such as Lamb of God, Son of
God, Prince of Peace, and so on. Talk
together about what these different titles
mean and what they tell you about Jesus.
Then read together today’s Gospel, John
1:29-34.
Consider how John the Baptist gives
testimony to who Jesus is. Talk about what
people might come to know about Jesus by
observing your family life. Pray together that
your family life will show others that Jesus
is the Son of God, the lamb who takes away
the sins of the world. Pray the Lord’s Prayer.

St. Andrew the Apostle - His Life and Legacy
Our parish men’s ministry, Man Up, is sponsoring an evening of
enrichment for all parishioners on Tuesday, February 18th beginning at
6:30pm in Father Leger Hall, Madonna School. Our guest speaker, Dr. Linda Lee Ritzer, will
present the life and legacy of St. Andrew the Apostle as revealed in Sacred Scripture and the
teachings of the Church. Join us in exploring the significance of St. Andrew in the Christian
tradition and consider ways in which our patron Saint can help guide and inspire our new
parish. A short social and light refreshments will follow. ALL ARE WELCOME!
ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE INFORMATION
As you may have noticed, that all communities are now using one Envelope Company. Your envelopes have
our new parish name of Saint Andrew the Apostle, a Bar Code and a new envelope number as you’re a new
parishioner of Saint Andrew the Parish.
Please take notice in regards to the collections for Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish that we will report
weekly the total amount collected for our parish in the bulletin, this will take the place of listing each church
separately in the offertory section.
We will also be announcing in the bulletin when there is a second collection other than your regular Sunday
Envelope. Some of these second collections are new for our Parish of Saint Andrew the Apostle:
The Initial Contribution is a NEW yearly envelope to help offset the cost of the printing and the distribution
of your envelopes sent out every 8 weeks.
Maintenance Fund for all of our many items for our buildings that need to be fixed as well as regular
maintenance.
School Subsidy for Madonna Catholic School needs to be paid every month.
PSP ENVELOPES Parish Share Program is additional envelope which assists our parish to complete the
goal that we have been assessed to pay. This envelope is only in addition to your yearly Gift or the ten-
month payment that starts every Lent. If we are unable to collect enough money to pay the goal, we will then
need to take the money needed from our checking. However, any money over and above the Goal that is
collected we will be able to use for our parish needs.
Finally, the Diocese has a list of their own Collections through the Year like the Bishop Education Fund for
example.
Again, we will place some information in the Bulletin prior to these collections.
PLEASE be attentive that you are writing your checks for donations to SAINT ANDREW THE APOSTLE.
With the work of our new parish we have been assigned to use the CFS Bank in Charleroi for all of our
banking needs.

47th MARCH FOR LIFE
If mankind and governments were all good neither
would need laws or a constitution. Our Christian
Faith teaches us that God holds us to 10 laws and a
greater law of love. Our government has a multitude
of laws, many that leads us to disregard the
principles of the morality our nation was founded
upon. Let us not remain a nation fueled by
selfishness, greed, hate, and the type of government
dependence that leads us to kill an unharmed child
in the womb. The hurt of destroying the elemental
mother and child is harder to bar than the courage
and humbleness it takes to ask for help, and the
charity to give that help. The National March for
Life this year is January 24th , 2020 in Washington
DC.

January 18 to 25th is the Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity. The theme for 2020 is “They
Showed us Unusual Kindness” (cf. Acts 28:2).
Annually, leaders of faith communities throughout
the world gather together to arrive at the theme for
the annual celebration of Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity. This year the theme finds its origins
in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 27:18 - 28:10).
During this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,
let us join all Faith Communities to create ways of
prayerful witness for Christian Unity by heeding
Jesus’s prayer “That they all may be one.”
Praying for Peace throughout our Communities of
Charleroi, Donora and Monongahela and throughout
the World .
If for any reason there is a cancellation of any
activity going on in the parish such as Protecting
