2015 Pendleton Whisky Let ’er Buck Stock of the Year Awards

Each year, the top ProRodeo cowboys in each roughstock event vote for the top bucking horses and bulls – the animal athletes with whom they contend in the arena and whose performance is worth half their own scores. Ballots go out every Sept. 1, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet each December just before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and/or breeding programs, feed and medical care for their bucking stock for years, fostering the animals’ growth and development until they are ready to be tested in the arena for the bucking instinct and physical abilities that may make them champions in their own right.

In 2010, Pendleton Whisky expanded its ProRodeo involvement by sponsoring the stock awards, which are now known as the Pendleton Whisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards. Pendleton Whisky provides cash prizes for the top three animals in each event and funds the stipends for stock contractors who provide bucking stock for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. In 2015, both bucking horse winners were defending their 2014 titles – Medicine Woman also won in 2011 – while bucking bull Crystal Deal finally made it to the top after placing in the top three the previous two years.

Dirty Jacket Pete Carr Pro Rodeo

With three of the top eight scores of the 2015 regular season to his name – a 92 and two 90s, with three different riders – it’s no surprise that Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s horse Dirty Jacket earned his second consecutive Bareback Horse of the Year Award in 2015. Richmond Champion, who collected one of those 2015 90s as well as the top score of 2014, a 91, on Dirty Jacket, at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, right, describes Dirty Jacket as “electric – when he’s in the chute and you’re standing next to him, he’s got the same nervous twitch you do right before you get on. He’s excited – he really wants to get out and do what he loves to do, and he means business. But he gives you all the time in the world to show off and do your part. He’s a real athlete, the total package.” Owner Pete Carr says, “He was born to buck. When it’s time to go to the rodeo and time to go to work, his ears go up and he prances.”

Crystal DealGrowney Brothers Rodeo

Crystal Deal has a reputation for shifting around in the chute, says bull rider Dallee Mason, but he’s not being dirty – just eager. “He’s itching to go; he’s ready for that gate to open,” says Mason. “He’s what you want to get on every time; he has kick, he spins right there by the chute and he’s showy. He’s an older bull, so he’s learned some tricks, but he still acts young.” Although Crystal Deal bucked Mason off on consecutive weekends in 2015, in Walla Walla, Wash., and Puyallup, Wash., right, he’s hoping for a rematch. “When I think about that bull, I just want to get on him again,” Mason says. Don Kish, who raised Crystal Deal for Growney Brothers Rodeo, says the bull comes to glory naturally – through his pedigree. “This bull is no accident – this is what breeding programs are designed to do. On his father’s side he goes back to Mr. T, the 1986 Bull of the Year, and on his mother’s side, he goes back to Oscar, a Hall of Fame bull. You look at him on paper and say, ‘He ought to be good,’ and from the first time he bucked, he was. He’s an awesome bull.”

Medicine WomanFrontier Rodeo

Medicine Woman cruised to her third Saddle Bronc of the Year title after notching two of the top four scores of 2015 – a 93 in Dodge City, Kan., and a 92 in Arcadia, Fla. – and that was before she won top saddle bronc of the 2015 NFR for the second time. “Medicine Woman is the most honest bucking horse I’ve been on who still manages to throw a lot of cowboys off, just because of how strong she is,” says 2015 World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Jacobs Crawley, who rode the mare in Round 5 at the Wrangler NFR that year for 88 points, right. “She is deceivingly strong, and she really kicks and takes the swells away. Her strength and her drop make her tough to ride. But at the same time, that gives you the opportunity for a high score.” Jerry Nelson, owner of Frontier Rodeo, is thrilled by his mare’s achievements, describing her as an honest bucker. “She doesn’t do nothing dirty. She’s the kind of horse guys want to get on.” Nelson was also quick to note that Medicine Woman’s breeding is a huge factor in her success: “Pretty much everything I’m raising goes back to horses I bought from Harry Vold Rodeo, including my stud Big Medicine, and Mr. Harry Vold gets most of the credit.”

Remuda AwardsThe PRCA’s annual Remuda Awards presented by Polaris RANGER® go to the stock contracting firm

and rodeo committee that provide the best, most consistent pen of bucking horses, creating the best opportunities for contestants to score well. In 2015, the Remuda Award for best pen of bucking horses brought to PRCA rodeos went to David Morehead’s Three Hills Rodeo, and the committee recognized for assembling the best pen of bucking horses was the Pendleton Round-Up in Pendleton, Ore.

David O’Neill, left, vice president of the Pendleton Round-Up committee, and Randy Bracher, who oversees livestock for the Round-Up, were proud to accept the 2015 Remuda Award presented by Polaris RANGER® for bringing the deepest field of top bucking horses to that rodeo. “Providing stock so that every cowboy has a chance to win the Pendleton Round-Up is more important to us than anything else,” said O’Neill, calling the award “a great honor” and thanking former PRCA board member Kelly Wardell for his role in developing it. The Pendleton pen included great horses from Calgary Stampede, Cervi Championship Rodeo, Korkow Rodeos, Burch Rodeo, Sankey Pro Rodeo & Robinson Bulls, Outlawbuckers Rodeo, Corey & Lange Rodeo, Four Star Rodeo, Barnes PRCA Rodeo and Flying Diamond Rodeo.

PRCA stock contractor David Morehead accepted the 2015 Remuda Award presented by Polaris RANGER® for bringing the best pen of bucking horses to PRCA rodeos; his horses are pastured in the rolling hills around Bernard, Iowa, five miles from where Morehead grew up. He’s been a PRCA stock contractor for nearly 30 years and says that diligence and perseverance are keys to operating the business successfully. He started his ranch breeding program in 1979 and has bred all his own bucking horses since the mid-1980s. “The Three Hills Rodeo bucking horse breeding program is the foundation of our success in the rodeo industry,” said Morehead, “and we were deeply honored to receive the Remuda Award for 2015.”

2015 AQHA/PRCA Horses of the YearTimed-event contestants will tell you that they are only as good as their horses enable them to be. Horses that collected the American Quarter Horse of the Year Award in 2015 performed consistently all year and put their riders in position to win – literally. All were first-time winners except heel horse Rey, who defended his 2014 title.

The 2015 AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year Awards went to:Steer wrestling

1. KR Montana Shake Em “Shakem,” owned by Ty Erickson and Kyler Ranch; ridden by Ty Erickson and Clayton Hass

When 13-year-old Montana Shake Em “Shakem” retired from racing five years ago, Ty Erickson somehow saw his potential as a bulldogging horse – but Shakem didn’t exactly race into his new job. “I didn’t have this horse to the point where I felt I could win every time on him until this year,” said Erickson. “I took my time with him because I knew he had the potential to be great, and this was his first season rodeoing hard. He’s the laziest horse you’ve ever seen when he’s on the ranch or when he’s warming up, but as soon as you ride into the box, the switch flips, his ears go up and he’s ready to run.” Erickson and Shakem won the 2015 Redding (Calif.) Wrangler Champions Challenge with a 4.4-second run, right.

Dew the Dash “Dew” was a bit of an underdog for this award, acknowledged Clay Tryan, his owner and rider. While he considered Dew to be the best horse he’d ever tried from the first time he rode him, Tryan says Dew has to overcome one disadvantage. “He’s a unique horse because he’s not very big, but I’ve never seen one that will try that hard for his size,” says Tryan. “He’s a warrior.” Dew took Tryan to the Wrangler NFR five times, including 2015, right, and has come close to this honor a few times but never made it to the top of the list until 2015, so Tryan feels especially gratified this time. “He’s deserving of this award, and I’m not saying that just because he’s my horse. It’s an honor for him to win it, and now he’ll be known as one of the greatest horses of all time.”

Although Rey Shines on Top “Rey” started out skittish around large crowds and noise, he has over five years become one of the most seasoned and reliable horses in rodeo – a big factor in his being the only 2014 AQHA PRCA Horse of the Year to repeat in 2015. Minor attributes 90 percent of his success to Rey, having ridden him at 70 of his 75 2015 PRCA rodeos – including a frenzied final week of the regular season in which Minor moved up five places to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, right. At home, says Minor, Rey is “really laid back (but) he’s the boss of the ranch. However, he also knows when he hears a rodeo announcer’s voice that it’s time to work. Right now he’s in the prime of his career, and I hope that I can say in five or six years that he’s one of the best ever.”

French First Watch “Custer” has earned so much respect from the Top 15 barrel racers that he was named 2015 WPRA/AQHA Horse of the Year despite having never finished inside the Top 15 before. Perhaps the award partially acknowledges the unique achievements created by the partnership Custer has with his jockey, Jill Welsh, who has dealt with rheumatoid arthritis for a decade, and at age 26 entered a three-year battle with a series of cancers. Welsh credits her family – including Custer – with helping her get back to what she loves: running barrels. She and Custer won big rodeos at Reno, Nev., and Greeley, Colo.; placed at more, including Prescott, Ariz., above; and earned the most money of any contestant over Cowboy Christmas 2015.

Troy Tillard qualified for the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping just once in his first 15 years as a PRCA cowboy, then qualified back to back in 2014-15 as well as the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping, above. The difference? He got Rowdy. Troy’s father Tim bought the horse in 2013, and Troy says Weavers Diamond Bar “Rowdy” has brought him to a new level. “This horse has changed everything for me. Every time I nod my head, I really believe I have a good chance to win,” he said. “He’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of horse, and it takes pure luck and being in the right place at the right time to be able to have a horse like this. There are about a half-dozen elite steer roping horses, so it is a heck of an honor to have everybody vote for him, and it means a lot.”

Photo by Kirt SteinkeAt only age 6, Flea has already shown her talent in the rodeo arena: she carried 24-year-old Marcos Costa to his first Wran-gler NFR qualification in 2015. Costa’s mentor, 2008 World Champion Tie-down Roper Stran Smith, said their relationship was key to their success: “Marcos could’ve ridden any of 20 horses and that horse would’ve won Horse of the Year. He’s the only roper I know who could’ve taken a 6-year-old horse with limited rodeo expe-rience and do what he did. She’s a great little mare, but Marcos riding her made her even better. He was fortunate to have her, but she was fortunate to have him riding her and teaching her. They make a great team because she does everything that he’s taught her and she always wants to win for him really bad. The sky is the limit for a horse like this.”

Justin Boots, in recognizing the hundreds of thousands of hours of work that rodeo committee members around the country donate to putting on their local rodeos, has long made a practice of honoring 100 outstanding volunteers around the country through its John Justin Standard of the West program. PRCA rodeos vote on the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of those thousands of volunteers. In 2015, that award went to PRCA announcer Mike Mathis for his dedication to his hometown rodeo, the Lufkin (Texas) PRCA Rodeo.

Winners of the John Justin Committeeperson of the Year Award include:1990 Philip Diehl, Pawhuska Elks Rodeo, Pawhuska, Okla.1991 Cletus Schenk, Red River PRCA Rodeo, Wichita Falls, Texas1992 Duane Mahlum, Wolf Point (Mont.) Forty years ago, when Mike Mathis returned to his hometown of Lufkin, Texas, with a brand-new college diploma and some college rodeo experience, he made a mistake many young people make at that stage of life, he told the ProRodeo Sports News. “I thought I knew things about rodeo and I made a lot of snide comments about how sorry our Lions Club rodeo was,” he recalls. “I found out when you’re 20 years old and you say that to a bunch of older, established business people, the next thing you get to be is the chairman.” And that, Mathis said, was the start of his amazing journey. “From day 1, the people (here) embraced the rodeo and have worked to add money to become the kind of rodeo we wanted to be,” said Mathis. “I just organize the rodeo and that sort of thing.” So he was quite surprised to learn he had been selected as the John Justin Committeeperson of the Year for 2015. “I was very honored, but by the same token, very humbled, because those guys are the ones who do the work,” Mathis said of his fellow committee members.

PRORODEO AWARDS574

One of the PRCA’s newest awards honors contract personnel (such as announcers, bullfighters, clowns, specialty acts, secretaries and timers) who have been PRCA members for at least 15 years and who have committed their lives to the rodeo industry, yet received little recognition for their commitment and contributions. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among those five. The posthumous recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes and mentor to uncountable thousands of contestants and other people involved with the dozens of Barnes rodeos. The PRCA renamed the award in her honor in 2012.

The 2015 recipient of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award was Cotton Rosser, who began his rodeo career as a contestant in every event, but after a ranch accident in 1956 turned his rodeo dreams into a stock contracting business and rodeo production.

Past recipients of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award are: 2011 Donita Barnes 2012 Art and Linda Alsbaugh 2013 Fred and Norma Dorenkamp 2014 Quail Dobbs 2015 Cotton Rosser

Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award

The 2015 PRCA Donita Barnes Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award went to ProRodeo Hall of Fame stock contractor Cotton Rosser, known for 60 years of offering flamboyant rodeo openings and creative sideshows that keep the audience entertained between rodeo events. Rosser also has served on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Board of Directors. Lori Orman of RAM presented the award to Rosser at the PRCA’s 2015 Contract Personnel Awards Banquet, left.

Linderman Award Kyle Whitaker learned most of what he knows about rodeo from

his father, Chip … who also taught him about Bill Linderman. The Whitakers will forever be linked with the great all-around cowboy

because of the number of times they have won the award that bears his name. Kyle won a record seventh Linderman Award in 2015; his dad and Phil Lyne both won it four times, which was the record before Kyle came along.

“That’s what makes it special to me,” Kyle said. “Every rodeo I went to growing up, they introduced him as the Linderman Award winner. When I started rodeoing, they’d introduce me as the son of the Linderman Award winner.”

At age 39, Whitaker didn’t expect to win it a seventh time, but he was the only cowboy to meet the difficult requirements in

2015 and gain eligibility for the award. He earned $39,175 during the 2015 rodeo season – $31,679 in steer wrestling, $4,980 in tie-down roping and $2,516 in saddle bronc riding – the same three events as his father and grandfather, Vern Whitaker, who was a member of the Cowboys’ Turtle Association, the precursor to the PRCA.

“I appreciate it a lot more now than the first time I won it, when I was 21. It means a lot more now, and it could be the last one for me,” Whitaker said. “There are a lot of young guys with the talent to win it, but it takes a lot of dedication, and part of the difficulty of winning the award is staying healthy enough to qualify. Bill Linderman was a tough, true cowboy, and that’s what this award honors. I want people to think of me as a tough cowboy who’s handy and can do whatever it takes.”

The Linderman Award recognizes excellence at both ends of the arena. To qualify, a cowboy must win at least $1,000 in each of three events, and those events must include at least one roughstock event and one timed event. The Linderman Award is named for Bill Linderman, a world champion in timed and roughstock events who died in a 1965 plane crash near Salt Lake City. The first Linderman Award was presented in 1966.

Resistol Rookies of the YearA PRCA rookie is a cowboy competing in his first year as a full member

of the organization. (Cowboys first join under the PRCA’s permit system, which allows them to compete for some time without becoming full-fledged members. Once a cowboy has “filled his permit” by winning $1,000 at PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, he can apply to become a full member; he is considered a rookie for the remainder of that season.) The PRCA’s Resistol Rookies of the Year are the first-season cowboys who earn the most money in their events during that season.

The Resistol All-Around Rookie of the Year is the rookie who earned the most money among all rookies who won at least $3,000 in each of two or more events. From 1956 through 2010, the PRCA also gave an Overall Rookie of the Year Award to the rookie who earned the most money in any one or more events.

Starting with the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, money earned at the Wrangler NFR counted in the rookie standings. The only rookies who competed at the 2015 Wrangler NFR were tie-down roper Marcos Costa and two saddle bronc riders: Zeke Thurston, who led the rookie race by $6,132 before the NFR, and CoBurn Bradshaw, who earned $153,577 in Las Vegas to beat Thurston by more than $100,000 for the title.

Also of note: 2015 Steer Roping Rookie of the Year Thomas Smith is the son of the 2014 Steer Roping Rookie, Tom Smith.

PRCA rookie standings and the 2015 Rookie of the Year Awards are sponsored by Resistol Hats.

Jace Melvin set his sights on becoming PRCA Resistol All-Around Rookie of the Year in 2010, so when he won it five years later, he was nearly overcome. “My heart nearly came out of my chest,” he said. “I’ve always prided myself on being an all-around cowboy. I want to take what I learned this year and apply it to next year – I want to win more than $3,000 in steer wrestling, tie-down roping and team roping.”

The 2015 Resistol Rookies of the Year were honored during the sixth performance of the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Dec. 8.
