Kennesaw State University Health Promotion and Wellness

Social Media Guidelines and Policy

Kennesaw State University Health Promotion and Wellness exists for the students’ well-being. Whether it’s first-year students, students living on campus, or commuters, the students depend on Health Promotion and Wellness just as much as Health Promotion and Wellness

depends on students for its own success. That’s why it’s important to find new, dynamic ways to reach and engage the students: our most important audience. We’ll accomplish this by

developing social media presences on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Guidelines The purposes of creating social media accounts are interacting casually with students as

well as communicating with a consistent and united voice. The best approach to achieving this consistent voice will be to use pictures and information from the Health Promotion and Wellness

website when creating the accounts.

● For each social media platform’s account handle/URL and account name, use the following respectively:

○ “kennesawstatehpw” and “Kennesaw State University Health Promotion and Wellness”

● For each social media platform’s profile picture, use the logo:

● For each social media platform’s banner or background image (Twitter, Facebook), use

the photo of the Dr. Betty L. Siegel Student Recreation and Activities Center from our website:

● For Twitter and Instagram bio’s that are limited to a certain amount of character’s, use

the description from our website’s homepage:

○ “Health Promotion and Wellness serves the health and wellness needs of KSU students through programming focused awareness and education of the whole person.”

● For the Facebook biography, use the “overview” from the website:

○ “The mission of Health Promotion and Wellness is to improve the balance of the intellectual, emotional, physical, social, environmental, and spiritual development

of our students through awareness and education.” ● For each social media platform’s website section, use the Health Promotion and Wellness

URL: ○ http://studentsuccess.kennesaw.edu/wellness/

Predicating the social media platforms on the website’s content has many benefits.

Basing the pages off the website will make it easier for students to find the pages and confirm their credibility, and it can also make students more aware of their resources at Health Promotion

and Wellness. The accounts themselves will be modeled after the website, but the contents of Kennesaw State University Health Promotion and Wellness’s social media posts will be more informal, which refers to social media policy.

Policy

Health Promotion and Wellness currently reaches students through mediums that many might consider to be “formal,” such as emails and surveys. Social media presents us and other

organizations with unique opportunities to reach publics in personable and casual manners, which can be especially effective with college students. Social media will provide a useful

alternative mode of communication for reaching students, especially when paired with the more formal methods.

● Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram posts should emphasize that being healthy and well can

be fun and very beneficial to Kennesaw State University students. The goal is to communicate to students that visiting Health Promotion and Wellness or participating in

its events can be entertaining and valuable to their well-being. Remember, we’re trying to engage students. Find ways to get them to share the page with friends. Gain their attention through humor and content that they can relate to. We already reach them

formally, so the focus is to be informal. ● While humor and relatable content are part of the goal of creating social media, we must

also remember to keep the main focus on health and wellness. Being funny isn’t as important as our main objective, which is keeping students informed and well.

● Not all students are the same. With many students from different backgrounds,

ethnicities, and cultures, it’s important to always remember to stay away from content that could be offensive to various groups. Always double check to see if posts could be

considered offensive in any way before posting them. Unfortunately, “funny” and “offensive” can be very subjective. This is why the social media policy requires diligence. If you have to ask yourself whether the content of the post could be offensive,

then it might be best to avoid making that post altogether. ● In the event that anyone directs any negative, obscene, or vulgar social media posts at us,

it will be best to ignore him/her until it becomes a habitual occurrence. At this point, blocking the user from whichever account that it’s posted on will yield the best results.

● Remember, anything posted to social media or the internet can be accessed forever, even

if the account operator removes or deletes the post. You are personally responsible for Health Promotion and Wellness’s content. Be responsible, and use common sense.
