Video Teacher

T4 • Pre-Algebra

The course Pre-Algebra allows students to become masters of arithmetic through the study and practice of whole num-bers, fractions, decimals, ratios, percents, and measurements. Using algebraic approaches to common problems is stressed early in the text and videos. Students continue to practice their arith-metic skills by applying them to business and consumer mathematics. A strong emphasis on algebra prepares students for Algebra 1, their next course in mathe-matics. Units on statistics, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry intro-duce students to other higher branches of mathematics and promote a confidence that they will have success with them. Many constructions are taught in Plane Geometry. To ensure that students can apply their mathematical skills to real life situations, there are word problems and Problem Solving Strategies nearly every day. Thus, students are encouraged to connect varying types of mathematical knowledge. Speed tests and abundant practice problems help students to work quickly and accurately. Bible verses or inspiring quotations begin each unit in Pre-Algebra.

Each video lesson is about 45 minutes in length and will best fit into a 50-minute class period. Five minutes is allowed for you to check homework. You will need to give quizzes and tests personally.

Establish accountability on the part of each student. Let students know you expect them to listen, to learn, and to practice every day.

When a student is absent, check the Daily Guides for the days he missed to see what homework he needs to make up. He may also need to watch video lessons he missed or be helped by another student or yourself in order to catch up with the rest of the class.

Note: Lessons have been recorded for only 170 days, although most school years are longer. The extra days are allowed for the scheduling of field trips or special school events.

1. Checking Equipment. Check equip-ment each day to make sure it is run-ning properly. Be ready to start on the right lesson.

2. Following the Daily Guides. Check Daily Guides each day to determine specific responsibilities for that day.

3. Checking Homework. Check daily at the beginning of class to see that each student has completed his homework.

Although students may not completely understand a problem, they should attempt every problem. Spot-check this homework quickly (using the Pre-Algebra Teacher Key) to see whether students are completing homework problems accurately. This check will help you to identify difficulties early. It is not necessary to grade the home-work unless the Daily Guides instruct otherwise.

3. Quizzes and Tests. You will be giving quizzes and tests as they occur in the lessons. Quizzes and speed tests are normally given following the homework presentations and brief review. Further quizzing and testing information is pro-vided in the Giving / Grading Quizzes and Tests section of this manual.

4. Review and Lesson. After homework has been discussed, the video teacher reviews important principles and pre-sents new material. Have students fol-low the lesson as they are instructed on the video. It is vital that students pay close attention, use their books, and fol-low the question and answer exchange given on the video. Tell students to answer the teacher’s questions in their minds (or aloud) and to follow closely to the answers given by the video students. Paying close attention to this portion of the video lesson will help students to learn and to retain facts and principles they need to know.

5. Practice. Students will be assigned problems to practice in the text. If stu-dents are not having difficulty with the work, assign an appropriate number of students to put their work on the chalk-board and present it to the class. Then fastforward the video to the explanation. If students are having great difficulty with the assigned practice, then they

The following is a typical class schedule for Pre-Algebra with suggested times for students to participate:

1. Homework Check. Begin each day with homework check. Walk around the room and check to see that each student has completed his homework; spot-check for accuracy. This check should be completed in five minutes. Assign an activity (in the Daily Guides) for students to do while you check homework.

2. Homework Presentation. At the beginning of each video lesson, home-work problems are discussed and answered. Video students write their homework problems on the chalk-board and present their work and the answers. Students should compare their work with the answers on video and make any corrections needed. (If students are doing especially well, you may occasionally wish to have them explain the homework themselves and then fastforward the video directly to the lesson. If students are having difficulty, you may need to allow them to see the homework presentation on video first and then briefly explain the problems again themselves before going on to the lesson. Your goal is for students to really understand—not merely listen to—the video expla-nations.) At the end of Homework Presentation each day, students write at

Speed tests are given about twice a week. Most of the speed tests provide practice with the four arithmetic processes: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The tests are timed, and the time to allow is given on each speed test. Speed tests challenge students to work quickly and accurately. Encourage

students who cannot finish within the time given to practice at home. Students who can finish on time with a high percentage of accuracy will be better able to work the problems assigned from the text. You will give and grade speed tests in class.

1. Remove speed tests and speed test cover sheets from Pre-Algebra Quizzes / Tests. Separate the tests by cover sheets and staple each packet together. (There are four packets, one for each nine-weeks grading period.)

2. Distribute the first packet of stapled speed tests to each student.

3. Instruct students to write their name on the cover sheet the first time a packet is given to them. They write their name and the date in the spaces provided on the speed test for that day and then put their pencils down until you tell them to begin.

4. Tell students the time alloted, and then tell them to begin.

5. When the time is up, tell students to stop. Have students exchange papers for grading.

6. Call out answers to the speed test. Tell students how much to count off for each wrong answer. (Point values are given in Pre-Algebra Teacher Quiz / Test Key.) Students sign their name on the paper they grade and write the grade in the space provided.

7. Students return graded speed tests.

8. Students record their score on the cover sheet by placing their score on the line beside the speed test number. The speed test should take approxi-mately 5 minutes.

9. Collect speed tests, check them, and keep them for future use.

10. At the end of the nine weeks, average scores on the cover sheet, and record the average as two quiz grades.

1. Students clear their desks and take out one clean sheet of paper for a cover sheet, a pen, and a pencil. Students should take quizzes in pencil and grade them in pen.

2. Distribute the quiz. (Quizzes are located in Pre-Algebra Quizzes / Tests.)

3. Students use the clean sheet of paper as a cover sheet. They should move it down to cover their answers as they take the quiz. The quiz should take approximately 10 minutes.

4. When you have finished giving the quiz, instruct students to put their pencils away (off their desks) and to grade in pen.

5. Tell students how you want them to exchange papers. If you have a large class, vary the pattern from day to day (pass them forward one seat, back one seat, across, to the left, etc.).

6. Students sign their name (in pen) on the paper they grade.

7. Give instructions for grading—how many points to deduct for each wrong

answer and how to mark the papers. (Having students grade the papers in a uniform manner saves time when you go through the papers later.) Point values are given in Pre-Algebra Teacher Quiz / Test Key. On all graded items, subtract 1 point for each misspelled answer; do not subtract more than 5 total points.

8. Give correct answers.

9. Students figure the final grade by subtracting from 100 the number of points missed. The grade should be written in the space provided.

10. If a student has a question about the paper he is grading, have him place a question mark both by the number in question and by the grade at the top. Instruct students to return papers to the owners, who should check them briefly and then pass them to the front.

11. Go through the quizzes later check-ing for question marks and misspelled answers. Record the grades.

2. Distribute the test. (Tests are located in Pre-Algebra Quizzes / Tests.) Stu-dents should write their name at the top of the test paper.

3. Explain any special directions. Stu-dents should finish during the time allotted. Also tell the students what is to be done when they finish the test (where to turn in their tests, what to study, etc.).

4. Students take the test in pencil, writ-ing the answers directly on the test paper. Have students use the clean sheet of paper as a cover sheet. They should move it down as they take the test.

5. After students finish the test, they use the check sheet to rewrite problems and check answers. Some problems can be checked by rereading the question and checking the answer for accuracy.

6. Always watch students until all tests have been turned in.

1. Students clear their desks of everything except a pen. Distribute graded tests.

2. To go over test, ask if a student has all answers correct in the first section. Choose a student to read answers in that section. Continue this procedure until all answers have been given. An-swer any questions students may have about a particular test question.

3. Watch students carefully while you are going over a test. They should not

have any pencils out while they have graded tests.

4. If students find a question that has been graded incorrectly, they should write (in pen) the number of the incorrectly graded question and put a question mark at the top of the first page.

5. Collect tests, check any question marks, and record grades.

Grades are averaged at the end of each nine-weeks period. Record grades of the three-weeks test and the six-weeks test in red ink and record quizzes in blue or black ink. At the end of the nine weeks, follow this procedure.

1. Average speed test grades from student score sheets. Count speed test average as two quiz grades.

2. Average quiz grades including the average obtained from the speed tests. This aver-age is called the daily average and counts as one third of the nine-weeks grade.

3. Average test grades for the quarter, except for the final test of the quarter. This aver-age counts as one third of the nine-weeks grade.

4. Count cumulative nine-weeks or semester or final test as one third of the nine-weeks grade. To compute a nine-weeks grade:

Example: Quiz average: 96 Test average: 94 Cumulative nine-weeks or semester exam: + 92 282 ÷ 3 = 94% (final grade)

5. Figure a semester average by averaging the first nine-weeks grade with the second nine-weeks grade. (The semester exam counts as the nine-weeks test for the second nine-weeks period.) To compute a semester grade: Example: First nine-weeks average: 94 Second nine-weeks average: + 86 180 ÷ 2 = 90% (semester grade)

7. Check that all tests have been col-lected. Grade these tests yourself. Do not grade tests in class. Answers and suggested point values are given in Pre-Algebra Teacher Quiz / Test Key. On graded tests, subtract 1 point for each

misspelled answer; do not subtract more than 5 total points. It is best not to record grades in your grade book until going over the test in class.

8. Have all tests graded and ready to return to students in the next lesson.

It is IMPORTANT . . .

to train the student to respond along with the video class as they review, have class drill, and respond to class questions. This is most effective in student mastery of the subject content and emphasizes what the teacher considers important. Daily learning is reinforced here.

Student test scores will usually reflect this mental participation—either for good or for bad.

The classroom video teacher from time to time may mention things to enhance the class that your students may or may not be able to participate in. The video manual will not necessarily mention such activities.
