Some of the finest examples of New Zealand Heritage Art will be offered for sale in the Important, Early & Rare auction to be held Tuesday 28 July. Three early watercolours by Colonel Robert H Wynyard are complimented by a rare and unusual photograph album by the Burton Brothers, Frank Coxhead and Josiah Martin. Highlights of importance include a major Goldie The Aristocrat held in a vault in Wellington for nearly forty years, last seen by the public at the Goldie exhibition in 1999 together with C.F. Goldie’s only known self portrait, an exceptionally fine pair of Maori portraits by Gottfried Lindauer, each painting a major work in its own right and an early, rare work of Blind Chief of Otawao known as ‘Blind Solomon’ by Joseph J Merret
Of great interest are fourteen topographical paintings from the Estate of Sir James Fletcher, who has long been acknowledged as one of this country’s most pre-eminent collectors and it is a privilege to offer exceptional works from his personal collection by Nicholas Chevalier, Alfred Sharpe, Christopher Aubrey, Frank Wright, Rev. John Kinder, John Gully and Charles Decimus Barraud. Other interesting entries include early and rare lithographs, the Maori language version of New Zealand’s Declaration of Independence along with a document concerning the sale of land on Waiheke Island in 1862 of Cabbage Tree Bay (Oneroa) by Chiefs and people of the Ngatipare Ngatitamatera tribe which add variety and interest to the sale. Works by Norman Wilkinson, Albin Martin, Charles Blomfield, John Philemon Backhouse, Patrick J. Hogan, Horatio Gordon Robley, James Peele, John Barr Clarke Hoyte, John Gibb, Edward Fristrom, James N. Nairn endorse the quality of offerings associated with the Important, Early and Rare Art Auctions.
The category of Modern and 20th century paintings continues to be well represented with never before seen works by artists such as Felix Kelly, John Weeks, Edward Bullmore, Evelyn Page, Sydney Lough Thompson, Garth Tapper Michael Smither, five works by Toss Woollaston, a Colin McCahon scroll along with a major painting of great intricacy by the late Buck Nin.
