The Michigan Young Learners English (MYLE) tests are a fun and motivating way to assess the English of young learners ages 6-10. The tests—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—cover all four language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). General Information

What should a child bring to the test?

Children must bring colored pencils or pens (red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, black, brown, and gray), and an ordinary pen or pencil.

How are the MYLE tests scored?

The center where the child takes the test sends completed test materials to Cambridge Assessment English for scoring. A team of trained raters scores each test carefully. Qualified speaking examiners score the speaking tests.

What about children who need accommodations?

Michigan Language Assessment wants everyone to be able to demonstrate language ability under circumstances that are fair and equitable. Accommodations can be requested, which may include changes in the format or the administration of the test.

When are the MYLE tests offered?

All test centers choose their own MYLE exam dates, provided that the dates are reserved at least five weeks before the exam date.

Certificate

Each test taker receives a certificate and statement of results. Test takers earn medals to reflect their proficiency. The maximum score is five medals for each part of the test. A result of one medal means the child can improve significantly in that skill; five medals means that the child did very well in that skill and answered most questions correctly. The certificate also notes strengths, weaknesses, and things to work on next.

With a total of ten medals or more, a child could be ready to start preparing for the next MYLE exam or to move to the next Michigan Test: MET Go! for young teens.

Preparing for MYLE

Sample test materials, free lesson plans, and classroom activities are available on the Michigan Language Assessment website.

They are designed to help children achieve internationally recognized standards of English. There are three levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—which are linked to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages at levels A1 and A2.

There is no pass or fail on the MYLE. All children receive a certificate which shows how many medals they receive in each skill (Speaking, Reading & Writing, and Listening). The maximum score is five medals.
