9:00 am – 12:00 pm Positive Behavioral Supports with Students Who Are Wired DifferentlyMike Paget, M.Ed. Salon EDisorganization, irritability, intense moods, emotional escalation, anxiety, perfectionism: these are some of the Top 10 Challenges faced by students who are “Wired Differently” – and by their teachers. Supporting the increasing number of students (now estimated at 1 in 5) with emotional and behavioral challenges requires an array of practices beyond traditional discipline methods.

Learning Objectives: » Discover the importance of adult attitudes & behaviors when using positive behavior supports

» Explore how primary, secondary and tertiary behavior plans can be best employed with various mental/emotional/behavioral concerns

» Discover tools to help teach social skills to students who are “Wired Differently” within the paradigm of positive behavior supports

» Understand the importance of collaboration between families, schools and community resources

Mean Girls Behind the Screen: Preventing Bullying, Cyberbullying & Relational AggressionStephanie Jensen, M.S., LPC Salon A&B Girls create elaborate identities and personas on-screen; but do you ever wonder what is going on behind the screen? As girls experience the turbulent times of childhood and adolescence, they often turn to social media to hide their fears, confusion and anxiety from the outside world. The better we understand what is hidden behind the screen of “mean girls” the more effective we become in promoting the healthy development of confident, strong and happy girls.

Learning Objectives:» Learn how social media affects brain development

» Develop an understanding of how social media can impact mental health

» Discover strategies to teach Netiquette: Send Means Said

» Create a plan for effective communication in the digital and real world

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm Lost Boys: Strategies to Help Educators Navigate the World of Boys for Academic Success!Stephanie Jensen, M.S., LPC Salon A&BRather than penalize boys’ high energy – as traditional classroom methods often do – successful teachers are learning to take advantage of male liveliness, curiosity and thirst for competition. Unless educators stop to consider whether traditional methods are working for both genders, boys will continue to get the short end of the educational stick. This session will help educators understand the structural, chemical and processing differences between boys’ and girls’ brains. Discover innovative strategies, as well as group and individual interventions, to help boys achieve their highest academic potential.

Learning Objectives: » Explain how boys’ brains work including the chemistry and structure

» Recognize the role of hormones, specifically testosterone and dopamine

» Demonstrate classroom strategies to support boys’ developmental needs

Disruptive Behavior Disorders: Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder & Intermittent Explosive DisorderMike Paget, M.Ed. Salon EIn this session, author and behavioral consultant Mike Paget, M.Ed. will share effective practices for working with students challenged by these disorders in the classroom. Discover how educators can avoid power struggles and not take the behavior personally.

Learning Objectives: » Know the risk factors for and symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder and Intermittent Explosive Disorder

» Discover classroom accommodations and strategies for dealing with Disruptive Behavior Disorders

» Gain strategies for de-escalating confrontational situations in your school or classroom

Defiant, Manipulative & Attention-Seeking Students: Unlocking Their Potential & Surviving the Process – Part 2Larry Thompson, M.Ed. Pre-Conference Sessions*

8:00 am – 11:00 am Distraction, Disruption, Motivation & Grit: Our Brains on AdolescenceTom Maglisceau, Ph.D. Salon EFour high-energy, high-impact workshops in one! This session will help educators better understand the biology of the pre-adolescent and adolescent brains as well as the latest research behind motivation and grit. Additionally, participants will examine Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the characteristics of the Trauma-Impacted Learner as a guide for building resilience in our kids while weaving a safety net for student success.

Learning Objectives: » Generating a greater understanding of brain development as correlated with learning, motivation and “grit” » Utilizing “trauma-informed” and “mindset” research to establish classroom, campus and/or district cultural norms » Building classroom and school-wide systems of support through resilience-building strategies

Trauma, NOT a D-Code DramaCatava Burton, Ed.S. Salon A&BAdolescents are more susceptible to adverse childhood experiences (psychological trauma) during what Erikson described as the “identity versus role confusion stage.” Pubescent brains are pruning; trauma or toxic stress can substantially disrupt brain development, changing how they respond to perceived threats. In schools, students’ trigger reactions (fight, flight or freeze) are categorized as disruptive, defiant and/or disrespectful (D-Codes) resulting in more punitive disciplinary consequences.

Learning Objectives:» Develop an understanding of how trauma imprints on the brain» Analyze how student responses can present as defiance/disrespect» Gain research/evidence-based, non-punitive disciplinary responses to subjective behaviors

Self-Regulation Training: Framework for Success Brad Chapin, M.S., LCP, LMLP Salon C&DSelf-Regulation includes a set of skills necessary for academic success, emotional control and healthy social interaction. In this strategy-packed session, author and national consultant Brad Chapin will provide concrete lessons targeting each of the 3 skill-training areas identified in the Self-Regulation Training System (Physical, Emotional and Cognitive Regulation).

Learning Objectives: » Develop a level of understanding of Self-Regulation framework sufficient for teaching it to students and parents » Apply step-by-step strategies to teach young people how to increase Self-Regulation » Implement strategies in a way that is most effective for addressing multiple behavioral problem areas » Report measurable outcomes from application of Self-Regulation strategies

I Define Me! Not the BullyTracie Berry-McGhee, M.Ed., LPC Room 8Failed female relationships – many educators see the drama play out on a, sometimes, daily basis in the form of bullying and relational aggression. Psychologically speaking, the female brain is hard-wired to try to identify others’ emotions and feelings, and to respond with appropriate emotions in the hope for a connection. With girls’ increased sensitivity to relationships, an increased understanding of “self” is vitally important. Using a biblio-therapy poetry model, this session will explore and identify negative educational/societal trends, provide fresh strategies and enhance facilitation skills to help girls to be their best selves.

Learning Objectives: » Define communication barriers that promote low self-esteem and increase relational aggression » Consider critical “do’s and don’ts” when responding to girls in crisis » Create a safe space that allows for a sense of belonging where open disclosure will be validated

12:00 pm – 1:10 pm Plenary Session

Just Because It’s Not Wrong, Doesn’t Make it Right: Teaching Kids to Think & Act EthicallyBarbara Coloroso Salons E&F This workshop is packed with solid practical advice on how to use the stuff of everyday life to teach children to act with integrity, civility and compassion. Beginning with the idea that it is in us to care, that we are born with an innate capacity for compassion, Barbara Coloroso shows professionals, educators and parents how to nurture and guide children’s ethical lives from toddlerhood through the teen years using everyday situations at home, at school, in social settings and in the world at large.

The story about our human nature in today’s social and cultural climate is part and parcel of our human nature and our social and cultural climate. Our story is also guided by our compassion and loving kindness, which recognizes that there is no I without Thou, no We without Community and no way to survive without honoring both our unique individuality and our common humanity.

Learning Objectives: » How to develop an ethic rooted in deep caring with principles, virtues and values that are in the service to and at the service of that caring

» Understand the why and how to teach our children to think and act ethically

» Discover the possibilities and pitfalls of character education programs

» Master ways to nurture in children the three antidotes (care deeply, share generously, help willingly) to the virulent agents that are ripping apart the fabric of our human relationships (hating, hoarding and harming ourselves and others)

» Understand how rigid moral absolutism and shifting moral relativism interfere with raising ethical human beings

» Media: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly and the Indifferent – learn how we can help children use these tools and not be used or consumed by them

» Discern the difference between punishment and discipline – why one works and the other only appears to

About the Presenter Barbara Coloroso is an international bestselling author and for the past 40 years an internationally recognized speaker and consultant on parenting, teaching, school discipline, positive school climate, bullying, grieving, nonviolent conflict resolution and restorative justice. 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm Breakout Sessions

The Bully, the Bullied & the Not-So-Innocent Bystander: From Pre-School to High School – Breaking the Cycle of ViolenceBarbara Coloroso - International Speaker, Author & Bullying Expert Salons E&FDenver, CO PK-12

According to recent studies and surveys with American school children: » One in seven school children has been a bully or a target

» 35 percent of kids were directly involved in bullying incidents

» Bullying peaks in the eleven- to twelve-year-old age group

» 38 percent of students identified special education students as those targeted by bullies

» 24 percent reported that race bullying occurred now and then or often

» 23 percent of the students bullied and 71 percent of the teachers reported that teachers intervened often or almost always

It’s a deadly combination: Bullies who get what they want from their target; bullied kids who are afraid to tell; bystanders who watch, participate or look away. . .and adults who explain incidents as simply “teasing” and a normal part of growing up. Discussing her book, The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander, Barbara Coloroso gives parents, caregivers, educators, the medical community and juvenile justice personnel – and most of all, kids – the tools to break this cycle of violence. Drawing on decades of working with youth, parents and teachers, and her wide experience in areas of conflict resolution and reconciliatory justice, she offers a blueprint for healing and prevention strategies in the workshop.

3:00 pm – 4:00 pm Keynote Session

10 Steps to a Trauma-Empowered School & ClassroomAaron Wiemeier, M.S., LPC Salon E&FAccording to NCTSN (National Child Traumatic Stress Network), one out of every four children attending school has been exposed to a traumatic event that can affect learning and/or behavior. These events range from severe weather events, to divorce, to bullying, or to homelessness, among others. The results of exposure to trauma can affect a student’s ability to learn. She may be distracted by intrusive thoughts – distracting her from paying attention, learning and doing well on tests. Exposure to violence can lead to decreased IQ and reading ability.

Is it enough to just be informed? Does information by itself lead to automatic change?

Motivating, Engaging & Empowering Latino & African American Males to Learn While Creating Conditions that Promote Student AchievementPedro Noguera, Ph.D. Salon E&FWhile much of the focus of policy for the last several years has been on standards and assessment, relatively little attention has been paid to what can be done to motivate students to learn. There is an implicit assumption that high stakes testing and a variety of punitive measures can be used to get students to achieve. For large numbers of students these strategies have not worked and in many cases, they have contributed to student alienation from

school and learning. In this session, Dr. Noguera will draw on research carried out in secondary schools in NY, LA and Boston to describe what is being learned about student motivation and how these lessons can be applied in a greater number of schools to increase student engagement and achievement.

About the PresenterPedro Noguera, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Professor of Education in the UCLA Department of Education and a renowned expert on issues in urban education including education and economic and social development, race and schooling, immigration/migration, leadership and school reform and student achievement. He was formerly the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University, where he was Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. He has held tenured faculty appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he was named the Judith K. Dimon Professor of Communities and Schools and at the University of California at Berkeley, where he was also the Director of the Institute for the Study of Social Change. Dr. Noguera has published more than 200 research and scholarly articles, monographs, research reports and editorials on topics such as urban school reform, education policy, conditions that promote student achievement, the role of education in community development, youth violence and race and ethnic relations in American society.

His books include City Schools and the American Dream, Unfinished Business: Closing the Achievement Gap in Our Nation’s Schools, The Trouble with Black Boys…and Other Reflections on Race, Equity and the Future of Public Education and Creating the Opportunity to Learn: Moving from Research to Practice to Close the Achievement Gap with A. Wade Boykin. His most recent book is Schooling for Resilience: Improving the Life Trajectories of African American and Latino Boys, which is co-written with Edward Fergus and Margary Martin. Dr. Noguera appears as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio and other national news outlets.

Early in his career he served as a classroom teacher in public schools in Providence, RI, and Oakland, CA, and continues to work with schools nationally and internationally as a researcher and advisor. He earned his doctorate in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley. A sociologist whose scholarship and research focuses on the ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions, as well as by demographic trends, Noguera says that schools are impacted by poverty in a myriad of ways, and that education should become a partner in systems that support poor students and families.

Responsibility-Centered Discipline Presenters: Larry Thompson (Creator), Eric Clark, Sherri Conrad, Brian Dinkins With today’s increased focus on academic success and measurable outcomes, how educators handle defiant, manipulative, apathetic or attention-seeking students

can often be the difference between success or failure in a classroom – or an entire school. This power-packed one- or two-day workshop will provide your teachers, counselors and administrators insights and strategies for reaching and helping these students with a five-step responsibility-centered approach that has been proven effective!

Wired Differently: Five Keys to Working with Students with “Acting In” and “Acting Out” Disorders Presenter: Mike Paget (Creator) Studies show that approximately 20 percent of all students are diagnosable

for a mental, emotional or behavioral health issue. This workshop will help your teachers, counselors and other school professionals understand how to support and teach this high-potential portion of the student population while avoiding an unmanageable classroom environment.

Girl Drama: How Educators & Parents Can Use Brain Research & Current Best Practices to Promote Positive Relationships & Prevent Bullying, Cyberbullying & Relational Aggression

Presenters: Stephanie Jensen, Tracie Berry-McGhee The focus of this one-day seminar is to provide educators specific strategies, activities and insights that can be used to confront and avoid girl drama and relational aggression. Based upon the latest brain research, as well as current best practices, these interventions can be used to revive, launch or sustain efforts to prevent drama and emotional violence among girls. Without help, girls who are targets often suffer lasting effects – including academic withdrawal, social withdrawal, depression, substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, delinquency, crime, dysfunctional relationships, self-injury and even suicide.

Lost Boys: Strategies to help Educators Navigate the World of Boys for Academic Success Presenter: Stephanie Jensen (Creator) This powerful one-day seminar helps educators understand the structural, chemical and processing differences

between boys’ and girls’ brains. It helps educators support boys’ developmental needs, while teaching them social /emotional competencies. Attendees will discover innovative strategies, as well as group and individual interventions, to help boys achieve their highest academic potential.

Self-Regulation: Teaching Impulse Control to Students with Social-Emotional and Behavioral Issues Presenter: Brad Chapin (Creator)Helping young people improve their Self-Regulation skills can help them to better

handle anger issues, anxieties, impulsiveness, academic challenges, self-esteem struggles and classroom behavior issues. In this one-day training workshop, your staff will be provided with recommendations and strategies to use with all students and in particular with students who have behavioral and/or emotional self-control issues. Self-regulation skills are critical to academic success, emotional control and healthy social interactions. Be sure your teachers, counselors and administrators can teach Self-Regulation!

Color Blind: Assessing Cultural Competency in Schools Presenter: Dr. William Noel, Sr. (Creator) During a recent school year, 1.2 million African-American students faced at least one day of suspension from our nation’s

public schools. Research reveals that African-American students were suspended at more than three times the rate of Caucasian students.

Attendees will learn why equity is more important than equality – equality promises everyone gets the same things but equity promises to give every student what he or she needs to succeed. Additionally, attendees will explore how implicit biases may have an impact on how educators treat students from poverty, minority students, students with disabilities and others.

8:30 am – 9:30 am Plenary Session

Building a Responsibility-Centered School CultureLarry Thompson, M.Ed. | @RCDGivemFive Salon E&F When they first walk into the building, most educators can “feel” the climate of a school fairly quickly. Leaders sometimes hope that team building events, open-door policies, additional technology and frequent communication will create a positive school culture. But school culture is based on relationships. When relationships are in conflict, the climate and culture are impacted. Many of the conflicts in school life are caused by behavior and discipline issues. If a teacher does not feel supported, that creates conflict. If a student does not feel “listened to,” that creates conflict.

Behavior issues – and academic issues – can often be traced back to a student’s lack of self-control (perhaps related to trauma or a diagnosis). Imagine a student with a weak self-control muscle. It may look like she can’t get herself to do things that she doesn’t enjoy or can’t control her anger. To help such students reach their potential, educators must help them grow the self-control muscle. In this session, author and supportive discipline innovator Larry Thompson will discuss how teaching students self-responsibility and self-control has transformed the culture of schools throughout North America – from private schools to juvenile prisons. Resulting in improved academic performance. You will learn how giving students the gift of self-control can improve academic performance and transform your school culture.

About the PresenterAuthor of Roadmap to Responsibility and Give ‘em Five, Larry Thompson, M.Ed., is often called upon to deliver keynote presentations for state and national education conferences because of his knowledge, humor and passion for assisting today’s students. He has helped thousands of educators and schools throughout North America break away from their traditional discipline models to a model that creates a responsible climate and responsible students. Larry has served in a wide variety of roles in education – from special education teacher to alternative and traditional high school principal. As creator of the Responsibility-Centered Discipline program, Larry understands that systems must be created that can be realistically implemented and sustained.

10:00 – 11:00 Breakout Sessions

Non-Exclusionary Discipline: Alternatives to the Referral/Suspension QuagmireLarry Thompson, M.Ed. Salon E&FThe U.S. Departments of Education and Justice have advocated a shift in school discipline policies – due to concerns about inequities in the administration of “exclusionary discipline” practices with minorities

and students with disabilities. While the causes of those inequities are the source of some debate, almost everyone can agree that educators have a far greater opportunity for success if they can keep students, especially at-risk students, in the classroom. Attendees will be guided through school-wide evidence-based discipline practices and proven de-escalation processes that are designed to create responsible students by harnessing the power of self-regulation. Implementing these key components has enabled schools to report reductions in office referrals of as much as 90 percent, while almost eliminating suspensions.

It’s a Package Deal: Clinical Treatment, Medications, School/Family Collaboration & Positive & Preventive Daily Experiences Working Together for the Best Student OutcomesMike Paget, M.Ed. – International Speaker, Author & Consultant Salon DOverland Park, KS K-12

Understandably, we would like to be able to just fix things by sending challenged students to the “mental health fixers.” But that doesn’t work. A measure of accomplishment for any neuro-diverse student is to have a “good” day with social and academic successes. Adults who supervise kids are at the core of any progress. Clinical supports – including medications – are often helpful, but cannot replace the centrality of a student having a good day.

Girl Drama Is Real!Tracie Berry-McGhee, M.Ed., NCC, LPC – Founder, SistaKeeper @soulflowersista Salon CFlorissant, MO K-12In this session, we will explore how to use social-emotional learning circles for girls to impact social aggression and decrease the factors that motivate relational aggression. Berry-McGhee will also offer interactive tools used in SEL circles to create a safe space through the use of poetry, music and therapeutic mentoring to develop trauma-free spaces. Educators, counselors and administrators will

understand the benefits of facilitating gender-specific programming that promotes strength and resiliency in girls, increases literacy while also improving their attitude toward school, home and community resulting in reduced depression.

Creating a Culture of Consent: Peer-to-Peer Sexual Assault PreventionShael Norris – Sexual Violence Advocate & Executive Director, SafeBAE @Safe_bae Salon BCape Elizabeth, ME 6-12

We will share our extensive, authentic and youth-created library of free materials for educators to utilize in their schools. Without having to upend your health class curriculum, you can empower student leadership to change the culture of your school to a CONSENT CULTURE! Our content covers consent, safe bystander intervention, survivor resources, rape myths, Title IX rights and much more.

Supporting African American Male Persistence in CollegeChristopher Scott, M.A. – Youth Educator | @ChrisSmotivates  Salon AToledo, OH 9-12Using a case study approach of one African American male college student, this investigation identified the underlying social factors that supported the student’s persistence in college during his freshman

year at a predominantly white institution, or PWI (Predominately White Institution), in the Midwest. Attendees will learn to recognize the social-cultural differences of the urban African-American male college student and how these differences impact student persistence in higher education. By identify this skill set early, educators are able to aid other students to develop them early.

Centered strategies that will help teachers and administrators keep students in class – and help students learn and grow in the process.

Mean Girls: Behind the ScreenPresenter: Stephanie JensenRecent studies have shown that the dramatic increase in social media use is associated with intensified social anxiety, social isolation and feelings of loneliness. Studies also show a correlation between the amount of time spent on social media and personal life dissatisfaction. Girls create elaborate identities and personas on-screen; but do you ever wonder what

is going on behind the screen? As girls experience the turbulent times of childhood and adolescence they often turn to social media to hide their fears, confusion and anxiety from the outside world. As a result, girls are twice as likely as boys to develop an internalizing disorder such as depression or anxiety by mid-adolescence. • Develop an understanding of how social media can impact mental health• Discover strategies to teach Netiquette: Send Means Said• Create a plan for effective communication in the digital and real world

Climate & Culture Cannot Be Transformed with Disciplinary ReferralsPrincipal Baruti Kafele, M.A. | @PrincipalKafele Salon E&F Classroom management is a perennial hot-topic in education circles. Teachers can so often be heard grumbling, “If I could just get them to behave appropriately in my classroom!” In the numerous cases when students do not, a disciplinary referral is frequently generated, handed to the student and brought by the student to a disciplinarian for consequences. In this highly-engaging, self-reflective keynote address, Principal Kafele will make the case that classroom management isn’t the problem. He contends that classroom management is too “micro.” Instead, he

challenges teachers to think “macro.” To that end, he takes teachers on an introspective journey of the overall climate and culture of their classrooms while engaging them in a self-reflective discussion of their attitudes toward their students, the strategies they employ toward keeping their students motivated and engaged, the intentionality of the relationships that they nurture with their students and how effective they are with engaging their students’ parents.

About the PresenterAward-winning principal, internationally-renowned education speaker and best-selling author, Principal Kafele is on fire! He’s on a personal mission to close the ATTITUDE GAP, the world over.

A highly-regarded urban public school educator in New Jersey for over twenty years, Principal Kafele distinguished himself in the classroom and as a school leader. As a middle and high school principal, he led the transformation of four different schools, including “The Mighty” Newark Tech, which went from a low-performing school in need of improvement to national recognition by the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education, and U.S. News and World Report Magazine recognizing it three times as one of America’s best high schools. Currently, Principal Kafele is one of the most sought-after education speakers for transforming the attitudes of at-risk student populations in America. He is the author of eight books including Closing the Attitude Gap, The Principal 50, The Teacher 50 and Is My School a Better School Because I Lead It
