2013-2014 PRE-INTERMEDIATE CAT SPEAKING
PRE-INTERMEDIATE SPEAKING EXAM PROCEDURES
Two students take the exam together (Students take the exam in pairs on an
appointment basis).
The exam does NOT include a focus on interaction. There are two parts in the exam.
The exam lasts for maximum 10 minutes.
There will be two teachers in each class.
PART 1
The teacher asks 2 or 3 questions to each student (about their personal life, school
life, hobbies, routines, future plans...etc.) and the students answer the questions they
are asked individually. When one of the students is speaking, the other student listens
to his/her friend.
Students are expected to answer 2-3 questions at length (i.e. They are expected to
expand their answers adequately, not to respond by saying just Yes/No)
PART 2
The teacher shows a picture to one of the students and asks him/her to describe the
picture.
Each student has 15 seconds preparation time before he/she starts speaking.
When one of the students is describing the picture, the other one listens and then the
teacher shows a different picture to the other student. At the end of the preparation
time (15 seconds), he/she starts to describe the picture.
After each student finishes describing the picture, the teacher asks one follow up
question to each student related to the picture.
The assessors give a grade to the students out of 10.
