Pre-Start Checks Check the condition of the tires, lights, car

body, etc. Check around the vehicle. Check intended path of travel. Close and lock the doors. Adjust seats. Adjust mirrors and head restraints. Fasten seat belts.

Starting The Car Make sure the car is in park (neutral for a

manual transmission). Depress the clutch pedal (only for manual

transmissions). Check for the parking brake to be on. Turn the ignition key to the “On” position

and check gauges, then on to the “Start” position.

Release the key as soon as the engine starts.

Putting The Vehicle In Motion Put foot firmly on the brake, using the right foot. Depress the clutch pedal (manual transmissions

only). Shift into the desired gear (drive or reverse). Release the parking brake if applied. Check mirrors and blind spot. Signal intentions. Remove the foot from the brake. Apply gas pedal gently. Cancel Signal

To Stop And Secure The Vehicle

Check traffic (mirrors and blind spot). Signal intentions. Lightly tap brake pedal to warn others you

are slowing or stopping. Apply smooth, steady, firm pressure to the

brake pedal until the vehicle has stopped. Shift into park. Set the parking brake.

To Stop And Secure The Vehicle

Take foot off the brake. Check to make sure all equipment is off. Unfasten seat belt. Remove Key. Open door, exit curbside (if possible), and

lock doors.
