Unforeseen events can only be avoided if you are armed with the correct information. PreanestheticTesting Let Our Experience

Bring You Peace of MindEvery veterinarian wants the best outcome for his or her patients. When pets are facing surgery, veterinarians know thatpreanesthetic testing helps to minimize risks and protect patientsfrom unanticipated problems—complications that, while rare, can lead to disastrous outcomes.

Unforeseen events can only be avoided if you are armed with thecorrect information. Although in-house preanesthetic testing canseem to be convenient, the reliability and comprehensiveness ofresults obtained from a high-quality reference laboratory can makea measurable difference in your hospital’s economics and thequality of care that you deliver to your patients.

LOOK BEYOND THE BASICSCurrent medical and legal liability climates are requiring thatveterinarians provide the most comprehensive and accuratepreanesthetic evaluation possible to ensure the greatest safety for patients. It’s important to keep the following in mind:

    • ANTECH Diagnostics has extensive and rigorous quality control and assurance programs. These programs ensure thatreproducible results are achieved through the use of our state-of-the-art equipment operated by trained technologists. ANTECHroutinely performs quality assurance and recheck testing at alevel that is invariably not done by in-clinic laboratories.

    • In human medicine, it has been proven that greater experienceis linked to improved outcomes for patients. Our diagnostictesting experience far outweighs that of most in-clinictechnicians. This experience leads to far more accurate andconsistent results at a significant cost savings.

    • The cursory preanesthetic tests conducted on in-house equipmentin many hospitals do not address all organ systems or key healthparameters. Preanesthetic testing panels conducted by ANTECHare more comprehensive and offer a wider array of options.

    • Coagulopathy testing is critical. Many coagulopathies exist inan undetectable, subclinical state before surgery.

    Good Medicine = Good Business

Reference laboratories not only provide more com-prehensive preanesthetic test results, but they deliverthem at a lower cost compared with the true cost ofin-clinic testing. In general, reagent costs compriseonly 30% to 50% of the total in-clinic cost to performa profile.

Appropriate, comprehensive testing will help youavoid operating room disasters and help you detecthealth problems in your patients earlier, when theyare the most treatable.

EDUCATING CLIENTSSending samples out to a reference laboratory doesmean that clients need to come in a few days beforethe surgical procedure for a blood draw. However, this minor inconvenience is outweighed by thebenefits such visits offer you and your patient:

    • A more comprehensive laboratory report reducesthe risk of anesthetic or surgical complications.

    • Additional client visits to your practice bringincreased opportunities to deliver educationalmessages, promote wellness programs, and furtherbond owners with your hospital.

    • Scheduling a presurgical visit for the pet offers anexcellent opportunity to collect lab samples andplan pain-management protocols.

Clients are accustomed to this procedure in humanmedicine, so most can appreciate the message thatobtaining more comprehensive, accurate resultsfurther reduces the risk of surgery for their pet.

    THE NEW PREANESTHETIC PROFILE!

BUN, Creatinine, Globulin, Glucose, and TotalProtein, plus PT and PTT

TIPBringing in patients for preanesthetictesting also works to increase clientcomfort with the hospital setting, resulting in fewer surgical cancellations.

PREANESTHETIC TESTINGRECOMMENDATIONSThe reliability and comprehensiveness of the information on which medical decisions are based is critical. Diagnostic laboratory testing parametersshould include all the major organs and body systems, and preanesthetic testing should be combined with athorough clinical examination +/– ECG to detectcardiac abnormalities and pulmonary disease.

    We recommend the following:

    • Comprehensive laboratory testing for all patientsundergoing anesthesia, including a coagulationprofile

    • Hemostatic testing before elective surgicalprocedures

    • A review of the patient’s history and a completephysical examination

    • Urinalysis
