editorialNammo’s first decade passed with great success and we have definitely and quickly sobered up after our 10th anniversary celebration.

Despite the global recession at the outset of 2009, the Nammo Group has suc-ceeded in a number of areas since then, and those successes are all presented herein. In the longer run, we are prepared to face uncertainty along with the economy in general. The best way to deal with an uncertain future is to maintain and utilize what we have learned these past years through cooperation and teambuilding across borders, stay focused on customers’ requirements, stay close to the home market and be flexible to adjust the organization to national and international market trends.

The 2009 Bulletin will present you with Precision – People – Technology by Nammo. These three words are our slogans, but also the buzzwords telling you who we are.

PRECISION – is the key word at all levels of Nammo’s operations.

PEOPLE – are Nammo’s most valuable asset.

TECHNOLOGY – at an advanced level is Nammo’s driving force. We always seek to be on the cutting edge.

I hope you will enjoy reading Nammo Bulletin 2009!

largest space contract awarded to norwegian company

Multiyear contract signed with the Finnish Armed Forces

On 1 April 2009 Nammo signed its largest space contract ever with EADS Astrium. The contract includes separa-tion boosters (FE), acceleration boosters (FA) and safe & arm devices (BSA) for 35 launches of the European spacecraft Ariane 5.

Ariane 5 is a European launch system for orbiting satellites in space from Kourou in French Guiana. The system is able to carry one or more satellites which can be positioned in different locations. The Spaceport – also known as the Guiana Space Center – is a strategically-located facility that provides optimum operating conditions for Arianespace’s commercial launches. Nammo has been involved in Ariane 5 products since 1991. The first contract was development and qualification of FE and BSA with start up production in 1996. Then development and qualification of FA which was in 2002-2003 and production start in 2004. From 2004, Nammo has

A multiyear contract between Nammo Lapua Oy and the Finnish Army Materiel Command was signed on 23 April 2009 in Tampere at the Army Materiel Command headquarters.

Various ammunition products are in-cluded in the contract, which will be de-livered to the Land Forces in 2009-2012. The contract value is approx. 70 MEUR excluding options.

The agreement fortifies Nammo’s posi-tion as a strong player in the ammunition industry in Finland, utilizing the exper-tise in Finland as well as in the overall Nammo Group. It is also an important continuation of previous multiyear con-tracts between Nammo and the Finnish Army Materiel Command.

Nammo Raufoss has with this contract proven its competitiveness in a demand-ing aerospace market!

The occasion was marked on 2 April 2009 at Raufoss, attended by represen-tatives from the Ownership and Trade department of the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) and from the Norwegian Space Center (NSC).

achieved contracts from Astrium-ST for all 3 products. Each launch includes a number of 16 FE, 4 FA and 17 BSA.

This major contract for Nammo Rau-foss represents a significant production volume of high-tech aerospace products over the next five years.

norwegian cluster munitions soon to be history! In March 2009 Nammo signed a contract with the Norwegian Armed Forces for the demilitarization of their stock of 52,000 ea of 155mm Improved Conventional Munitions (ICM).

The contract is a result of the Conven-tion on Cluster Munitions signed in Oslo 3 December 2008. So far, the Convention has been signed by 96 nations including 20 NATO countries.

This swift action by the Norwegian Armed Forces to destroy their stockpiles sends a positive signal to the other sig-natory nations. The Convention stipu-lates an 8-year deadline for destroying national stockpiles.

On 30 April 2009, Norwegian Deputy Min-ister of Defense Espen Barth Eide went to Nammo’s demil facility at Løkken Verk in Norway to press the button that start-ed the first disposal of Norwegian ICMs. He was accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Norwegian People’s Aid. Local politicians and the press were also present.

Continuous improvement programs – 6 sigma at Raufossby Tor Arne Skjervheim, ESSM Program Manager/ 6 Sigma Black Belt, Nammo Raufoss

Although the 6 sigma methodology is mainly a tool for problem solving and process improvements, the goal of the 6 sigma program at Nammo Raufoss is also to contribute to a positive and professional culture focusing on meet-ing or exceeding customer expectations, fact-based decision-making and leader-ship, and improved performance of our products by understanding and reducing variation.

This is achieved by educating and train-ing our people in 6 sigma methodology and philosophy and encouraging them to

apply this knowledge to improve the pre-cision of their daily work. The extent of this education program can be described by the fact that by March 2009 more than 210 key people had been through the two-day 6 sigma course, more than 600 people the lean-manufacturing course and close to 50 people more compre-hensive 6 sigma training. The success of an improvement program is measured by the results obtained, and many of the hundred or so completed projects at Nammo Raufoss have produced signifi-cant improvements. Examples of recently completed projects:

Continuous improvements in process technologyby Terje Vesterås, Technology Manager, Medium & Large Caliber Division

High-performance products call for high-performance manufacturing pro-cesses. Focus on process development is paramount to staying competitive as product demands evolve. Reactive process development through Agile and Six Sigma practices as well as proac-tive manufacturing-process develop-ment along with product development will secure safe and systematic product launches in the future. It’s all about con-tinuous improvements in the manufac-turing environment.

research programs on these issues in order to improve our manufacturing capabilities. The ability to recognize and take cor-rective action as close to the process as possible is essential for cost-effective parts manufacturing. High-precision, automated coordinate measuring ma-chines in the manufacturing environment set the basis for swift and to-the-point corrective actions. At Nammo this is now becoming a reality, with improved product reliability and performance as a result.

Customization through flexibility is one of the major focus areas for present and future production systems in order to survive in a highly competitive environ-ment.

Computer integrated manufactur-ing ensures a rational way of building stable quality and customization into the product, thus improving customer value. Automation combined with flexibility will become the rule as more advanced sensor technology with corresponding control systems materialize. Conse-quently, Nammo is involved in long-term

The fantastic opening ceremony at Beijing’s “bird’s nest” was an exhilarat-ing event. Even more exciting, though, was witnessing how the first winners were awarded their gold medals in the Olympic shooting disciplines. Jaques Rogge, president of the International Olympic committee, was one of the first to congratulate Czech Olympic medalist Katharina Emmons. Additional medals in small caliber disciplines were won by pistol shooters Gundegmaa Otryad (Mongolia) and Munkhbayar Dorjsuren (Germany), both using Lapua ammuni-tion.

Famous shooter Juha Hirvi, the flag-bearer for the Finnish Olympic team and bronze medalist at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, qualified two times for the finals and gave an excellent demonstra-tion of his skills.

A few weeks later, the Paralympics started in Beijing. When the German Paralympics team won the first medal,

Schönebeck – nammo’s oldest companyby Gerald Fetz, President Lapua GmbH, Small Caliber Division

Nammo’s oldest company is Lapua GmbH in Schönebeck, Germany. The company was founded in 1829 and cel-ebrates its 180th anniversary this year. Starting as Germany’s biggest manu-facturer of percussion ignition cups, the company gradually became a world leading producer of rimfire ammunition of the highest accuracy. Though the own-ers have changed, manufacturing was interrupted for only one year after World War II. Soon after the breakdown of GDR, a Finnish company bought “SK Jagd-

and Sportmunitions GmbH”, and finally, it became Nammo property in 1998. About 75 persons are working there at the moment, providing the world’s most accurate rimfire ammunition under the Lapua brand. We hold a market share of approximately 30% in selected segments. More than 80% of all biathletes world-wide use Lapua Polar Biathlon! If we put all rimfire rounds manufactured in Schönebeck in 2008 end to end, it would form a line between Tromsø, Norway and the southernmost village on Cyprus.

nils KubberudSection Manager, Engineering & Development, Missile Products Division

Together, Nils Kubberud and Erland Ørbekk have been working with aerody-namics and motor ballistics with focus on thrust vector control at the Missile Products Division (MPD) for more than 25 years. Before this, they both worked on their doctorate at CFD norway in Trondheim. One of the projects was for the Nor-wegian Olympic team prior to the 1994 Winter Olympics at Lillehammer. Their job was to work out the aerodynamic coefficients for ski-jumpers using the V-style. The V-style ski jump flight trajec-tory and length was calculated using the aerodynamic coefficients for different ski jumping hills. The work showed that the V-style increased the length of the skier’s jump by at least 10%. With the V-style, ski jumpers are closer to flying than jumping. Today, both Kubberud and Ørbekk are defining and characterizing the per-formance of rocket motors and thrust vector controls at MPD using what they have learned from studying ski jumping aerodynamics.

therese löfving Controller Assistant, Nammo Demil Division

My name is Therese Löfving and I live in the little village of Vingåker, Sweden. In June 2008 I started working as Control-ler Assistant for Nammo Demil Divi-sion AB and Nammo Sweden. I have a background in finance, having worked 14 years at various companies, mostly the Outokumpu Stainless Steel group in Västerås.

Working at Nammo has so far been a pleasure and a challenge at the same time. My reflection is that Nammo is a very lean organization where every-one has a lot on ‘their plate.’ The lines of communication are quite short and direct, which makes things easier. Since my position is partly new, a lot of the work has involved building administrative structures, which I find interesting and rewarding.

There is a lot to learn about ‘the world of Demil’!

people are nammo’s most valuable asset. here is a presentation of some of our employees working in different countries and within different areas.

Petri KontolaQuality Engineer, Nammo Lapua, Small Caliber Division

I work as a Quality Engineer at Nammo’s Lapua Plant in Finland. Since 2007 I have been the Finnish employees’ representa-tive on the Nammo Board as an observer. This interesting position has allowed me to follow production, technology, finance and business issues within the entire Nammo Group in different countries. The experience from the Board work and the intensive meetings (studying and handling the comprehensive reports and presentations, top management work, strategy plans etc.) has given me a somewhat new perspective on my personal duties and enabled me to see the ”big picture”.

I have been working for Nammo since March 2006. With my background as a proven financial manager in other companies before, I realize how Nammo is using a linked network to imple-ment financial strategies. I am bring-ing financial management forward in support of the business manager and the company’s managing director. My aim is to continuously improve the financial performance of my business area and the company, to improve interdepart-mental cooperation with my colleagues at Nammo and develop our greatest asset: our staff!

Ever since receiving my first air gun on my 10th birthday, small arms have been a part of my life. Combining mechan-ics, micro-mechanics, pyrotechnics and electronics with business poses a constant challenge. Also, people working in this field are passionate – like me! I wouldn’t miss it for anything. My name is Jacques. As the CEO’s right-hand man, I have many duties, includ-ing: finding solutions for new products, solving technical problems and preparing quotations or a paper for a new product presentation. The multiplicity of those tasks makes the job fascinating.

Being a member of the Nammo Group gives me now the feeling of building the future on solid rock.

Adam bravermanSales & Business Manager, Small Caliber Division

I have been active in the reloading and ammunition industry since 1992. In the USA, we have been making efforts to improve product availability through an enhanced distribution model. The importing partners we have chosen play a very important role in specific market segments. Some are geared toward the sport shooting and reloading market while others focus on the smallbore market. One thing these partners share in common is the maintaining of the Lapua brand of quality. With the contin-ued efforts of our importing partners and improved visibility through our sponsored shooters and shooting events, Lapua will continue to grow and capture market share in the USA.

Green Ammunition

Reduced Range Combat Ammunition

by Peter Hedsand, Product Manager, Small Caliber Division

by Peter Hedsand, Product Manager, Small Caliber Division

Environmental requirements for almost all products have become increas-ingly stringent each year, and both civil authorities and the armed forces have become more eco-conscious. Ammuni-tion, most of which contains lead and other toxic materials, is no exception. Many of the existing small-arms training ranges will be shut down in the years to come due to groundwater contamination. Several European countries are already considering acquiring Nammo’s “green” ammunition.

Through their early choice of green ammunition from Nammo, the defense forces of Norway and Sweden have set the standard for eco-friendliness in Europe.

uRbAn OPeRAtiOnS – MiniMize RiSKS FOR COllAteRAl DAMAGeS The Urban Combat scenario is fast-mov-ing, with threats from 360 degrees; and the need for full performance is obvious, with a maximum combat distance of 200 meters. The combat distance is probably shorter and the warfighter has to be pre-pared to fire his gun at any second and in any direction without walls or houses to stop his bullets. If he misses the target, the projectile can fly as far as 4000 me-ters in its trajectory at almost full energy. There is no time for the war fighter to consider the risk of a projectile missing the target and going the maximum dis-tance. This means that civilians or own troops are at risk of being hit by projec-tiles far away from the combat scene.

The performance of the Nammo non-toxic ammunition has continuously been tested prior to delivery since the first production run in 1999. The final design has reached and surpassed all design goals.

Nammo Lead Free ammunition is ben-eficial in combat. Penetration of hard targets such as trucks and concrete is superior to lead ammunition with sus-tained terminal effects. And the green contribution is quite obvious with 800 tons of less lead dispersed into nature so far.

full combat performance and matched trajectory compared to M855/M80, up to 200 meters (220yds) but with a safety fan of only 1500m (1640yds). This makes it safer to use live ammunition in politically sensitive or populated areas.

The RR round is also perfect as a combat round on missions where combat-risk zones may be limited. It is also highly suitable for federal and law enforcement operations in public areas.

Norway has adopted a new weapon sys-tem in the 5.56mm caliber (HK 416). For its new weapons acquisition, Norway decided the system must meet future environmental standards, so the weapon was qualified right from the start with green ammunition from Nammo.

The ammunition has met all the set requirements and is now NATO qualified. For the HK 416 weapon there is now an entirely new ball and tracer ammuni-tion for both combat and practice. The working environment has also improved because the ammunition emits no lead fumes when fired. However it is impor-tant, as always, to have good ventilation when shooting at indoor firing ranges or enclosed outdoor ranges.

The warfighter must move swiftly often house-to-house, clearing areas and rooms, and he must be able to fire his gun in any direction and angle. He has no time to think or adjust his fire to mini-mize risk of collateral damage. The said risk must be minimized by the system and the ammunition which is being used. Such performance must be built into the system by using a Reduced Range am-munition for Urban Combat.

Nammo’s answer to these growing problems is a family of 100% lead-free 5.56mm and 7.62mm Reduced Range (RR) Ammunition. These rounds have

tOxiC HC SMOKeThe high toxicity of conventional smoke grenades was the main reason for starting a development project in 1991. On several occasions, the so-called HC smoke had caused lethal lung damage in soldiers. In addition, the HC smoke gre-nade was incendiary, often causing fires in the training areas. In winter it was less effective because it melted its way down into the snow. Most importantly, in their new operational areas the military forces needed instant smoke screens for protection, a requirement the HC smoke could not meet.

plastic components. The new concept was based on the explosive dissemina-tion (air burst) of the liquid: Titanium Tetrachloride (TTC). When in contact with the humidity in the air, the TTC liquid produces a smoke screen at least 10 meters in diameter within 3 seconds of the burst. Because the new smoke hand grenade produces no flames, it can also be used for training in areas with dry vegetation.

SMOKe GRenADe lAunCHeRA TTC Smoke Grenade Launcher with 6 tubes for instant smoke screening of ve-hicles has also been developed. A smoke screen by 6 smoke grenades bursting 25 - 30 meters from the vehicle will cover least a 120-degree radius.

In the early 1980s the first environmental tests were conducted at Raufoss. Our equipment then consisted of a Loose Cargo table, an AVCO pneumatic shock test machine and an LDS 8 kN shaker. The shock tester and shaker were located in a tiny building, and the Loose Cargo table in an outlying shed. Already by 1985 the Environmental Test Center with five separate test cells was com-pleted and in 1995 it was augmented with a rather large vibration test facility. Today the center has four shakers in sizes from 8 kN to 250 kN, the two largest of which are able to combine vibration tests with

extreme temperatures. In addition, tem-perature tests within the range of ÷80˚C to +180˚C, hot & humid, salt fog, low pressure, loose cargo, jolt and jumble, are also available at our site. Over the past decade the Environmental Test Center has conducted tests for a growing number of customers within defense, automotive, space and oil exploita-tion. Test items range from tiny printed circuitboards to a 27-inch, 5.5-ton clamp for oil pipelines. The Environmental Test Center would like to thank our existing customers and welcome new ones with a test challenge to overcome.

Plastic material uses less energy than metals in produc-tion, in use (weight reduction) and in recycling. Plastic Training Ammunition could certainly also be called green ammunition. Today, Plastic Training Am-munition is manufactured in all calibers from 4.6mm - 40mm and is supplied by Nammo to military forces and law en-forcement communities in Europe, Asia and the US.

oped, and in 1959 the first Plastic Short Range Training Ammunition (P-SRTA) in the caliber of 7.62mm was introduced.

COSt-eFFeCtive tRAininGThe maximum range of P-SRTA is reduced compared to standard service ammunition and the safety range is generally only 1/10 of service ammuni-tion. The P-SRTA is intended for use in training areas where range restrictions preclude the use of full-range standard service ammunition. It allows for more frequent training because target practice is possible closer to barracks, and the time and transportation cost of both troops and vehicles to training areas is reduced. The P-SRTA also reduces the life-cycle cost of weapons because

excellent IM properties. The fin-stabi-lized projectile has great precision and the optimized warhead with the newly developed fuze is highly effective against multi targets. The 120mm IM HE-T am-munition is a low-cost IM solution that minimizes risk to the soldier.

Nammo and General Dynamics-OTS have jointly developed a fully IM com-pliant high explosive tank ammunition round named 120mm IM HE-T. The 120mm IM HE-T (Insensitive Munitions High Explosive with Tracer) is a full-bore tank ammunition round that combines low-cost insensitive energetic materials with an innovative venting design.

The OSX-8 explosive is BAE Systems’ best melt-pour explosive to date and

is expected to be qualified in the near future by the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center at Picatinny Arsenal. The seven-hole perfo-rated HYBRID propellant manufactured by St. Marks, a part of GD-OTS, will also be qualified soon.

The 120mm IM HE-T is currently under-going qualification for the Norwegian Armed Forces . Both the OSX-8 explosive and the HYBRID propellant have shown

Today, selling is difficult without a clear message about your product portfo-lio. Nammo carries a lot of interest-ing products, but in the end, what the market wants is solutions for supporting international missions.

Demand for urban warfare solutions has risen dramatically the past five years and is showing no sign of letting up the next five years.

Products must be designed to support the modern warfighter in an urban set-ting with low-intensity conflicts waged by separate insurgent cells. The prolif-eration of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and car bombs is forcing the infantrymen of our forces to resort to modern vehicle systems like the Patria AMV (8x8) or lighter (4x4) armored cars.Nammo is in position to support the

Vehicle solutions from a Nammo perspective are the result of a close re-lationship between Nammo, its partners and the Nordic Armed Forces. This is the reason we’re so highly competitive in terms of rapid concept demonstrations and spiral developments based on actual demands by users on international mis-sions. Nammo promotes cooperative work and is very active with live demon-strations like the Multipurpose Sympo-sium and Nammo Demo Days.

It is clear that new solutions will have to be developed within a shorter time frame than before. In the 1990s we had 10 years to qualify an ammunition type, whereas today we have 5 years and tomorrow maybe 2.5. We will draw on our internal strengths along with those of our part-ners to develop winning solutions.

systems with ammunition for the main cannons and the coaxial guns. The well-proven 12.7mm (.50 cal.) is becoming the locomotive for the success of the RWS-Protector systems – soon with additional support of the RWS-RAM missile. The 30mmx173 ammunition represents the most modern direct fire combat system, and Nammo is very proud to announce its success with the most modern ammunition family. These prod-ucts are the result of excellent engineer-ing, production equipment and quality management.

Scalable effects will take the existing fleet of main battle tanks to the next level. Nammo employs cutting-edge technology in qualifying new ammuni-tion. The new Insensitive Munitions High Explosive – Tracer (IMHE-T) is scheduled to be ready in 2009.

effective fuze technology

Specialist on high quality cups

by Pascal Guenot, President Nammo MTH

by Ralf Bollmann, Managing Director ND PressTec

MTH was established in April 2002 and became a part of the Nammo Group in April 2008. The founding of MTH was based on the remains of the well known Swiss fuze company TAVARO, founded in the 1930s and supplying most of the fuzes to the Swiss Army until the mid-‘90s. Nammo MTH operates with a cur-rent staff of 25 people out of Hérémence, a picturesque village 1,200 meters above sea level in the mountains of Switzer-land’s Wallis canton.

assembly. Then, each fuze undergoes numerous inspections on the production line prior to final X-raying. This ensures shipments of secured SAD.

Nammo MTH is ISO 9001 certified.

In addition to fuze technology, Nammo MTH has the capacity to develop other technical products or conduct technical analyses of foreign products as well as FMEA.

Nammo MTH’s current product portfo-lio includes a family of modern 40mm fuzes for high, medium and low velocity grenades as well as safety and arming devices (SAD), generators and mortar fuzes.

All fuzes developed and produced by Nammo MTH comply with NATO’s norms. As a key element in ammunition, they must be safe, accurate and highly reliable; for those reasons, critical com-ponents are individually checked before

ND PressTec GmbH in Schwerte, Ger-many, is a world-leading partner of am-munition manufacturers for small and medium calibers up to 20mm. The main products – cups and discs – have all-round civilian and military applications.

PressTec has been in this business for several decades, giving us the highest expertise and experience in the area of ammunition primary materials.

Cup production was originally part of Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke AG’s product line, but after the company demerged in 1999, the cup production was taken over by the newly formed

profit center Deutsche Nickel – PressTec GmbH. Early in 2007, the company, in cooperation with the Board, was bought by Nammo AS and has since operated under the name ND PressTec GmbH.

Because of surging sales the past ten years, we have greatly expanded our capacity. An important milestone was the start-up of the new case-cup press line in January 2009.

We never cease in our efforts to further increase the quality and precision of our ammunition. In this endeavor we work closely with the competent experts from Nammo.

laws & Regulations

ethics & CSR

by Sissel Solum, Vice President Communication, Nammo Group

by Sissel Solum, Vice President Communication, Nammo Group

Ethics is not only about the code of con-duct, but common sense. We must be sure that all Nammo em-ployees in our seven different countries belonging to seven different cultures understand what we mean by “common sense.” This makes the strong focus on the ethical code of conduct within the Group even more important, and we will continue to strengthen the focus on eth-ics in the years to come.

Ethics also goes along with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which has received increasing attention from our state ownership. The United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for busi-nesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles of human rights, labor, environment and anti-

corruption. In accordance with Nammo’s Ethical Code of Conduct, the Group sub-scribes to the UN’s Global Compact – ten principles for ethical/social behavior. Some tend to say a company’s CSR is simply window dressing, but for Nammo we truly believe it is our duty to share parts of the profit with the local commu-nities, the employees and our stakehold-ers.

It is crucial for us to follow the laws and regulations relating to our business. The Group’s reputation depends on our reli-ability and honesty.

Below is an outline of guidelines most commonly subject to public discussion.

At Nammo we always act in compli-•ance with laws and regulations in the respective countries of our operations.

Exporting defense materiel from one •NATO member to another, and to other likeminded countries, requires documentation substantiating the end user. Nammo marks all products accord-•ing to customer requirements and/or NATO standards.

Every Nammo facility producing •defense products must comply with the national export regulations of its respective country.

Nammo’s export of defense materiel •will always require an export license from the national authorities where we operate.

An end-user certificate is usually •required by the respective national au-thorities when we apply for an export license.
