predpop music data canvas
TRANSCRIPT
This project combines PredPop’s data analysis with 25 years of chart data from Billboard to discover interesting patterns and insights.
This open visualization project allows fans to learn contemporary music history and interesting facts by exploring data through a cool interactive experience. The canvas can be found at:
http://musicdata.predpop.com
Note: This project was not authorized by Billboard and we are not affiliated with their team.
Look for interesting connections in the data. If you find something cool, take a screenshot, then post it to social media using the hashtag #predpopcanvas
We’ve got some very cool prizes we’ll to participants!
The canvas allows users to compare and contrast the number of weeks different songs charted. Other examples might include researching how long a song was in the Top 10 and Top 40, the year it was released, and charting partners of different artists (or the same artist in at different times).
For instance these are all the songs by BoyzIIMen to ever make the Top 40.
Here is a similar chart looking at all of Usher Raymond’s charting songs.
Top performing songs from 2006 to 2008.
Some songs have connections that are hard to notice without using the canvas. For instance, this cluster of artists had similar performing chart toppers.
Each song is linked to its corresponding music video.
The sphere of data is oriented so that the older songs gravitate towards the bottom. This is a cluster of hits from the early-90s.
CREDITS AND DISCLAIMER
The data we used is not officially released data so may not be 100% accurate. We sourced all of our data from BullsFrogPond which crowdsources Billboard chart data and releases it freely.
We’d like to thank the team at Mappr.io for partnering with us.
YouTube links were algorithmically added to the dataset, there may be some missing videos but we tried to ensure this was not the case.
