THE PROBLEM

When constructing bridge abutments, impermeable soil layers cantrap water and create hydrostatic pressure against the structuralwall. Saturated soils, excessive water run-off from road surfacesand freeze / thaw cycles in colder climates make proper drainagea critical design consideration. Improper drainage design cancompromise the structure by creating leaks that requireexpensive repairs and/or maintenance.

When proper drainage is unavailable, the wall must be designedto handle heavier loads, resulting in higher construction costs.Vertical drainage using stone is not a practical or efficient longterm solution due to installation challenges and long term soilfines that can eventually clog the stone.
