i PREFACE We hope that this booklet will help introduce you to all the activities that Hawthorne has to offer. Each activity is listed with a brief description to help you decide if you would like to become part of that activity. One way to introduce you to the various activities that are offered at Hawthorne is the Activity Fair, which is held every October in the Hall. At the Fair each activity sets up a booth with representatives of the activity present to answer any questions that you may have. This is really a great way for you to become familiar with all that Hawthorne has to offer. Our many recreational facilities are part of the quality of life here at Hawthorne and we encourage you to get involved. Some of our activities have a fixed, but modest, fee; others charge for materials only. Activities, which are taught by individuals from outside our community, may have a fee covering their instruction. For exact information concerning each activity, consult the chairperson of the activity involved. While this is not a formal art therapy, you can open a coloring book and get some of the benefits just listed. For some people it helps with stress and/or depression. We are a judgment free zone and we love to socialize while we color. It doesn’t matter how new, old, good or bad you are. If you are interested, you don’t need a coloring book, we have plenty to choose from. We also provide pencils and markers, so you can try your hand at

HTV (TV 98) provides an important link in the communication system at Hawthorne. Hawthorne Today is a live broadcast from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., providing information, educational and entertaining programs. This program is re-broadcast for our residents at 3 p.m., 7 p.m., 11 p.m., 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Some programs are set up on a regular monthly schedule, while others are interviews with residents or are concerned with upcoming events. Programming changes and new ideas for shows are always accepted for consideration. Also part of TV 98, is what is commonly known as the Drum. Rolling advertising on Channel 98 tells you what is happening in Hawthorne. The Drum is also used to alert our residents to any emergency in our community. Hand and Foot - Have you ever played a card game called Hand & Foot? Well, many of our residents love to play it on Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. (If you are going to play, please try to be there by 6:15 so we have time to set up our teams and tables.) Hand & Foot is a little like Rummy, a little like Canasta, with a little strategy mixed in, but most of all it’s a whole lot of fun! We, of course, play by Hawthorne rules. We are always looking to expand our club, so don’t be shy. Join us any Monday evening in the Lemon-Lime Room - except the second Monday of each month we meet in the Marina because the Clubhouse is closed for Maintenance Day. We are always happy to teach “newbies”. For more information, please contact the chair listed on the monthly Program Calendar. Hope to see you real soon!

Visit us on the web at http://hawthornehistorical.org/. Hawthorne Players - Is anyone interested in theatre? Get involved! Attend play workshops; enjoy participating in skits, monologues and at least two productions a year. Members are often invited to perform short programs as entertainment for other activities. Beginner would-be actors are always welcome! There are many ways of using your talents as every production requires a stage manager, producer, someone in charge of properties, costumes, stage crews, make-up artists, curtain, prompter, set designers, publicity, and the important lighting and sound crews. All of the above are needed in addition to the director and members of the cast. We meet on the fourth Monday night of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Room. Our meeting usually concludes with a brief workshop or something to kick up your heels! Visit us on the web at http://www.hawplayers.org Hawthorne Quilters - This activity is for all quilters - beginners, intermediate and advanced. We all work and learn together from one another. One of the activities that we are known for is presenting Hawthorne residents who move to assisted living and nursing homes with a quilt. As a show of compassion, we often also gift quilts to those who have been unfortunate with fire damage to their homes. Each year a quilt is completed by the club and raffled off, with the proceeds being donated to a local fund raising group. We have also made and sent many quilted items to disaster victims around the U.S. We meet

We use this time to catch up on what is happening in our group, make plans for quilt shop outings, have show ‘n tell, welcome new quilters, and get to know each other. We also schedule some Mondays as a “Sew-In” Day. On these days we meet in the Craft Room at 9:00 a.m. and sew/quilt until our regular 1:00 p.m. meeting. We have the Craft Room again after the meeting until 4:00 p.m. if we wish to continue sewing/quilting. (Contact one of the quilters to determine which Mondays we will have our Sew-In.) We also meet every Tuesday evening in the Craft Room at 6:30 p.m. This is a very informal meeting where everyone is invited to bring the project they are working on. Some of us bring our sewing machine to sew, while others bring some of their hand sewing projects. Lots of sharing and inspiration occurs at this meeting. Check us out at http://hawthornequilters.org/ High Stepping Cloggers - Clogging is an American dance that began in the Appalachian Mountains. Kitchen Band - The band consists of men and women who entertain at seven different nursing centers each month. We gather every Tuesday morning at 9:15 in the marina parking lot to carpool to the locations for that week. We sing songs of yesteryear while playing various instruments, some designed from tools found in the kitchen. Be a part of Hawthorne’s community service and join us. No special talent is needed. Be sure to bring your smile. Kitchen Club - The Kitchen Club provides residents with the opportunity to serve the community by working on meals in a variety of roles. The group assists clubs by preparing and serving meals for their activities, fundraisers and banquets. Members of the club gain knowledge of the layout and supplies in the kitchen and can then provide assistance in their other clubs in the use of the kitchen. Money earned by the Kitchen Club enables the club to purchase equipment, dishes and silverware for the kitchen and to provide some supplies for community use.

Physical Fitness offers one hour of morning exercise designed to get a person into shape. We do a full body workout including cardio vascular with some standing and some on the floor. Not too strenuous, yet vigorous enough to improve circulation and muscle tone, resulting in a feeling of fitness. Pickleball Club members play on three newly surfaced courts. Each court is fenced off, which allows continuity of play without interference from other courts. The Club has over one hundred members, both male and female, with varying degrees of skill. It is easy to learn and fun to play and is the fastest growing activity among retirees. Pickleball is played with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball. Ball placement is more important than power. Club members pay a small annual membership fee. Three tournaments are held each year in March (Men’s, Women’s and Co-Ed). Free lessons are given from October through March. Meetings, grills, fundraisers and an annual picnic/pool party are among the off court activities. Quilling, or paper filigree, is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewelry, mobiles etc. The most popular and versatile technique is that of rolling. The paper strip is rolled in fingers or using a tool called a quilling needle. The coil is released and then glued at the tip and then shaped. These shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns. From the most experienced to the newest beginner, many friendly people enjoy learning the art of quilling at the class each week. This class is instructed by self-taught artist, Lois Weber, who has won three national awards for her beautifully quilled artistry. Under her guidance, beautiful cards, pictures, jewelry, etc. are created and enjoyed. Rummikub is a game played with numbered tiles that challenge your ability to manipulate the tiles to your advantage. It’s a game to boost your brainpower. We meet Monday night in the Gallery at 6:00 p.m. Come and enjoy. Saturday Night Dance - Ballroom dance music is provided for residents and houseguests by a rotating number of talented bands. Dances are from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00 per person. New residents coming for the first time will receive free admission to any dance except for the New Year’s Eve dance. Newcomers should contact the host or hostess at the committee table for a free admission ticket. Tickets are sold in the Hall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for special dances such as the Fall Ball, Jingle Bell Hop, New Year’s Eve, Valentine Sweetheart Ball and the Spring Fling.

VFW Post 6389 (Veterans of Foreign Wars) - The VFW provides an irreplaceable service to our nation’s wounded, ill, and injured veterans. Our primary focus is on local veterans and their spouses. The Honor Guard performs flag raising ceremonies in our park and in other communities and performs veteran funeral services at the Bushnell National Cemetery and at the Hawthorne Memorial Gardens. The Post also provides traffic control and parking assistance for large events held at Hawthorne. Old and damaged American flags are taken for proper disposal. Another feature of the meetings is to share pointers with each other on how to deal with their impairment. The club meets year round on the first Thursday of every month. Members pay no dues and funds are derived from donations. Our meetings are not only educational but we have entertainment as well as refreshments.

We work on the entire body with stretching, some tai chi, balance, upper body, cardio, arms, hips, legs, feet, fingers and everything in between. The class is an overall good strengthening of the entire body. The class also helps keep us healthy through exercises done in the water, which is also less stressful on the joints. And it’s fun! Classes meet all year round as long as the temperature is 60-65 degrees because with sunshine and a heated pool, you can’t ask for anything better during the winter months. And, no water shoes are required. Wii Club - Bowling with a simple sweep of your arm using a lightweight Wii Remote Controller. It’s just like regular bowling without throwing the heavy bowling ball. The next four players will bowl on the second TV. First come, first play and rotate through the sign-in sheet so that each player usually has time to bowl three games. There are no set teams, just try for the best score. Cheers and celebration for great shots, high scores, and improved games. The Wii console is also capable of being used to play tennis, baseball, golf and boxing. We welcome everyone, from beginners to experts. It is easy to learn and lots of fun and good fellowship.
