The 15th EFORT Congress in London will be held in partnership with the British Or-thopaedic Association (BOA). The aim of the partnership between EFORT and the BOA is to join the educa-tional activities of the two organizations and demonstrate the most innovative techniques in Europe, and in par-ticular the United Kingdom, to the entire orthopaedic commu-nity.

“Since the fi rst days of EFORT, the members of the [BOA] account for the highest numbers of participants and, with their enthusiasm and high methodical participation, they have contributed in a large way to the increasing scientifi c recognition of the EFORT Congress,”Manuel Cassiano-Neves, MD, president of EFORT and director of the Children’s Ortho-paedic Department, Hospital Dona Estefânia in Lisbon, said. “For this reason, it makes sense to have a fully integrated meeting between the two organizations during the London meet-ing.”

In 2010, EFORT organized a combined meeting with the Spanish Society of Ortho-paedics and Traumatology. However, this year is the fi rst time that the Congress collaborated with another organization for the entire sci-entifi c program.

“Holding a combined Congress with EFORT provides the ideal forum for trauma and or-

thopaedic surgeons, residents and trainees to meet, network and exchange knowledge and ideas,” Timothy Briggs, president of the BOA and director of Strategy and External Affairs at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Lon-don, said. “The environment is unique in cre-ating interaction amongst colleagues from all the European countries and offers a platform for the BOA to push forward the debate on current issues affecting the trauma and ortho-paedic community.”

According to Cassiano-Neves, the labor

movement across Europe has become more widespread and, as a result, a number of con-cerns have been raised regarding the standard of knowledge of orthopaedic surgeons work-ing in Europe. For this reason, EFORT increased the inclusion of activities of orthopaedic edu-cation in Europe and representation of EFORT within the European community.

There may be several advantages to correct-ing Lenke 5C thoraco-lumbar/lumbar adoles-cent idiopathic scoliosis with posterior spinal arthrodesis rather than the more traditional method of anterior spi-nal arthrodesis, investi-gators found in a study

scheduled to be presented on Thursday at the 15th EFORT Congress – a combined program in partnership with the BOA in London.

Simon Benedict Roberts, MRCS, and col-leagues at the Scottish National Spinal Deformity Centre in Edinburgh conducted the largest study of its kind investigating outcomes after posterior spinal arthrodesis (PSA) for treating Lenke 5C thoracolumbar/lumbar adolescent idiopathic sco-liosis (AIS) and used a novel unilateral segmental correction technique

Roberts said in an interview prior to EFORT that the study had also identifi ed fi ve radio-graphic parameters that correlated with the need for distal extension of PSA beyond the caudal Cobb level and used these parameters to develop a predictive equation surgeons can use to reliably inform lowest instrumented vertebra selection.

He said there are three main takeaways from the study results.

“Firstly, Lenke 5C thoracolumbar/lumbar ado-lescent idiopathic scoliosis can be effectively treated by posterior spinal fusion using pedicle screw instrumentation and a unilateral correction technique…Secondly, the need for extension of

the fusion distal to the caudal Cobb level is best guided by fi ve preoperative radiographic param-eters,” Roberts said. “Finally, you can incorporate these fi ve parameters into a predictive equation that has an 81% accuracy rate to determine the need for extending a fusion distally or not. This provides supportive and objective information for optimal surgical planning.”

The need to correctly determine the lowest instrumented vertebra, Roberts said, is important for the preservation of the distal motion segments

and to prevent postoperative spinal imbalance. For the study, Roberts and colleagues re-

viewed prospectively collected data for patients treated by Athanasios I. Tsirikos, FRCS, PhD, between November 2006 and August 2011. There were 72 patients who met the inclusion criteria and were followed up for 2 years post-operatively. All patients were diagnosed with thoracolumbar/lumbar AIS and treated with PSA using a unilateral convex segmental pedicle
