Updates from the CDC

1) What do we already know?a) Emergency Departments are often the first point of care for children’s mental health

emergencies.b) Emergency Department visits declined at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (March - April

2020), largely due to community mitigation efforts.2) What do we know now?

a) By April 2020, the proportion of children’s mental health–related ED visits among all pediatric ED visits increased and remained elevated through October.

b) Compared with 2019, the proportion of mental health–related visits for children aged 5–11 and 12–17 years increased approximately 24% and 31%, respectively.
