Preliminary Evaluation

Strengths

One of things I am most proud of regarding my preliminary task is how I successfully managed to sync the singers (mine) lips too the audio. This was particularly challenging as I didn’t use one continuous shot to capture the film but instead several different shots at different angles to create a varied and more visually interesting video. Using cuts between different angles also makes the video seem more intimate as it seems like the performance is just for the viewer alone as they can see the action from every angle. However, cutting all of these clips together to fit the music was especially difficult as they were all from different angles and you have to have every movement and cut down to the millisecond to avoid getting the lyrics and the movement out of sync.

The use of props in my video was also very successful in my opinion, as we look like a convincing band band and the black/white/red colour scheme is effective and matches our setting and costumes. The use of the curtains was very effective as it gave and intimate, concert atmosphere which matches the band and the songs style.

Weaknesses

One weakness of my preliminary music video is the brightness, contrast and camera quality. The quality of the cameras did not look very professional or effective with the lighting we had available as shot is much too over exposed and bright. I tried to remedy this by using a filter to make the rest of the colours in the shot match and be consistent to act as it was a stylistic choice but was unsuccessful. The band members look much too washed out and blurred which makes the viewing experience uncomfortable and the final product look unprofessional.

Another weakness is that the overall shot is very static, while cuts in editing add some movement, the band members are very static and don’t put much energy into the performance making the video seem lacklustre and dull. This was also because we weren’t actually able to play the instruments, whether we knew how to or not, because we were not able to make much noise during filming so the acting seems forced and withheld.

Improvements

The main thing I need to improve is lighting and exposure as this is the main issue with my music video so far which is making it look unprofessional and unattractive to look at. I will also make sure filming happens at a secluded place or time to make sure we can make as much noise during the filming and performance to make it look convincing.
