PRELIMINARY EVALUATION SHEETQuality of Summary My honest evaluation-

what was done well and what was not of good standard? Try to cite specific example and

moments from your video

Strategies put forward to make sure a high quality is

maintained.

Quality of holding a shot steady

While we were shooting our preliminary task we didn’t use a tripod however our shots were mostly steady, at times they were a bit shaky however we did well to maintain a steady shot which makes the quality of the shot a lot better.

In the future in order to make shots constantly steady we can use a tripod which will reduce blur from shaking the camera and make the quality of the shot better and make it look more proficient.

Quality of the framing shots We used various framing shots including reverse cuts and we successfully applied the 180-degree rule keeping the camera on the same side of the 180-degree line. Different camera angles were used and at least 2 shots of each clip was made so that when editing we could use the best clip.

In the future we can make even more shots of each clip, we can use different angles and a tripod to consistently produce a steady shot.

Quality of shooting material appropriate to the task set- i.e. the content of your film pre and post editing was consistent with the exam

directives

In our preliminary task we had to show a person walking through a door and talking to another person with a small amount of dialogue. We also had to put the following camera techniques into effect:- 180 Degree Rule- Reverse Shot- Match CutsWe included all these in our preliminary task when filming and even added some editing such as slow motion and audio effects.

As well as using all these methods our film also had to look real as if two people were casually meeting up and talking. When filming the real task we should do research into different camera techniques in relation to the genre of our opening two minutes. We should maintain using the methods used previously making them more professional and appropriate to our film.

Quality of selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and

setting;

When shooting our preliminary task we didn’t use much mise-en-scene, Leon and Mohammed were dressed in casual clothes stereotypical to teenagers, the scene was shot in

When we shoot our real film we need to think about mise-en-scene in much more depth, costume props and lighting should all be features of our mise-en-scene. We should research scenes,

school work was being done, which was ideal to the dialogue, and what they were talking about. We used some props such as schoolwork and pens, which emphasized the idea of doing work.

costume and what they could portray when shooting in order to convey different emotions, themes or personas in our film.

Quality of editing so that meaning is apparent to the

viewer

I think that when we were editing our film we successfully showed that the two people were having a conversation with the use of reverse shots. We also used a point of view shot to show what Mohammed was looking at, and when it was edited and put into our film it made the conversation look and feel smooth, with match cuts and reverse shots showing an engaged conversation.

To maintain our high standard of editing techniques we should shoot different clips multiple times and then pick the best one when editing it into our film. This ensures a high quality to be achieved – if one clip wasn’t shot well then there will be other clips to use.

Quality of using sound with images and editing

appropriately for the task set;

When editing we included a reverb sound effect for the final shot where the pen was dropping, we also put it in slow motion however it was too slow and the effect that we tried to portray wasn’t done well.

For our real film we should try out different editing effects to get the right one and replay them to the whole group and then get feedback on whether or not to use it in the film.

Quality of positioning and movements of actors

In the preliminary task the positioning and movements of our actors was one of the more positive areas in terms of quality. There position stayed at a friend proximity with gestures that suggests an informal talk. However the position of the characters when they were talking stayed quite formal in terms of where they were sitting (opposite each other)

In the real filming task we need to think about positioning of characters a lot more, we should go through different positions and film all of them then decide on what’s right for the theme and what we will be trying to portray i.e. intimacy, informal, formal.

but they were quite laid back at times which would suggest an informal talk.

Quality of group planning, meeting targets,

organization

Our group worked well together in my opinion, we were well organized and committed, this made us able to shoot our preliminary task earlier which gave us more time for editing and even possible decisions to re-shoot some parts of the clip. We met our target of completing the film within the given time frame and everyone put in effort to get it done, our organizer made a table of when all people in our group had free time and we used it to meet up and complete the set task.

For our real task we need to frequently meet up during free time and plan what we’re going to film and when. We need to continue our commitment and communication in the group to get the task achieved.

Group dynamics i.e. how did your group work

together

The group dynamics were quite good; we all got on with each other which I think helped when filming, we all communicated well and this helped a lot when filming. Everyone was given different roles in the group and when asked to meet up for filming everyone did.

When filming our real task we need to keep up the group dynamics making it enjoyable to work with each other but we also need to get good amounts of work done at the same time.

Other points of evaluation( e.g. equipment related etc)

Overall our preliminary task went really well, however the biggest problem was not having the right equipment, not having a tripod made our film look quite amateur at times which was a problem, and if we want our real task to look professional then we should be prepared and have all the right equipment.

For our real task we will have a tripod which will help a lot with steady shots and make our film look professional.
