Preliminary task- Magazine front cover

Page 2: Preliminary task magazine front cover

I have chose to emulate this certain cover for my magazine as I like the layout and the text featured on the cover. There are certain differences, such as my image laying behind the master head. The Hobbit is a very

established institution, so will be the selling point for this certain issue of Empire magazine. However, due to my film being new on the scene, I felt it would be more appropriate for it to not dominate too much of the cover so

to be even with the master head, which will be its selling point.

I started by editing in the main features of a magazine front cover, those being the image and the master head. I also put in Empire magazines strapline so to appear professional and realistic.

Other important features to include are the date and price.

Empire magazines Strapline, included on most issues, so is a typical convention of the magazine

I have edited the image using Photoshop. I wanted her to appear ghostly and supernatural. I edited the contrast and brightness of the image so she looks as if she is glowing. This creates an eerie vibe and leads the audience to connecting this with the genre that is horror. The colour blue stands out against the black, so draws the eye straight away to the central image. Her body language is closed up, with her hand over her mouth, telling the audience that she is scared and hiding. She is also looking out to the audience, which is regularly done with magazine front covers, so to engage with the audience. I used the ‘burn tool’ on Photoshop to blacken the edges so to make the central image stand out more, as well as it being a better basis for text.

Empire master head- important feature. The bold red is a traditional tabloid and magazine feature, making it stand out well. The simple lettering in capitals is fuss free, but is strong and dominating.

I have now added a sub title, which is an indication to what this issue’s topic is about, as well as a tagline to go with this subheading, which teases the audiences with revealing a little, but enough information. Using an exclamatory excites the

audience.

Sub title in bold capitals like the title, but in white, so to not draw too much attention away from the master head. The font is again very simple but sophisticated and smooth, giving a professional appearance.

I have included a bar code, a tradition feature of a magazine front cover.

After adding more text, the cover is starting to look more filled in and is coming together. The dark background of the image is a good basis for this text, and allows it to stand out and not fade in. I have stuck with a very simple colour

scheme of white, red and beige, which again follows the sophisticated theme, leaving the magazine refined and classy.

A persuasive device, letting the audience know the magazine features information the cannot read anywhere else.

With this text, I have made show to write amount topics that are relevant to this genre of magazine, such as film award shows, other popular movies, and relevant debates.

This is the finished cover. I have strictly stuck to emulating the hobbit issues cover, making sure to place text in the right areas and filling the space in appropriately.

The colour of the box stand outs well over the background, but at the same time isn't too over powering. This is another persuasive device to draw in the audience using phrases like ‘The scariest film of 2010’ and more exclamatory phrases to enthuse the audience. The colours I have used also muted enough to not distract the eye away from the central image.
