SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Praise God for creating us to be in relationship with Him. Thank Him for sending Jesus to provide a way for that relationship to happen. Pray for the kids who might decide today to start a relationship with Jesus. Ask God to guide those conversations.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWHAT YOU NEED: Offering container, UNO® or Go Fish cards

WHAT YOU DO:• Welcome to kids to your group and encourage them to put their offerings in the offering container.• Deal the cards for the game provided and explain (from the directions) how to play the game.• Give the kids a few minutes to play and then discuss how hard it would be to play the game without instructions

to follow.

2. TALLEST OR SHORTESTWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO:• Break the group into two teams and have the two teams line up and face each other.• Pick one kid to select the tallest and shortest person from the opposing team.• Then let the other team do the same.• Once the tallest and shortest kids have been chosen for each team, challenge the kids to line up tallest to shortest within

their own teams without talking.• When kids are finished, check to see if they are lined up correctly.• Then, challenge all the kids to get into one line from tallest to shortest without talking.• When kids are finished, check to see if they are lined up correctly.

WHAT YOU SAY:“Some of you are taller than others right now. And all of you are still growing! God made you uniquely you and he also made you to follow someone. [Transition] Let’s head to Large Group to find out who that person is.”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions.

* 1. GRID STORIES (application activity / review the Bible story) WHAT YOU NEED: Masking tape

WHAT YOU DO:• Use the tape to create a grid of five columns and five rows on the floor. The spaces should be large enough for kids to

stand in. See the grid drawing below for reference.

• Count kids off into four teams.• Instruct each team to choose one team member to be its “pawn” on the board.• Once chosen, have each team’s pawn stand in one of the corners of the grid (where you see the “Xs” above).• The goal is for a pawn to move across the board (to the opposite corner) one space at a time by answering a question

correctly.• Choose the starting team by picking a number from 1-15. Let each team guess the number; the team that gets it correctly

or closest gets to go first. (After the first team has answered one question, move clockwise around the board, keeping the order of the teams as you play.)

• The rules are as follows: o Teams can only move their pawn diagonally on the board, but they can move in any direction (backward or

forward) they choose. o You cannot have more than one pawn per square. If another pawn is standing in the spot a team wants, that

team must pick another move diagonally on the board. o The questions can only be answered by the pawn; his/her team cannot help. o After the pawn answers a question correctly, he/she can only be moved by his/her team (in other words, it’s the

team’s decision, not the pawn’s). o If a pawn answers a question incorrectly, that pawn loses his team’s turn and the same question gets asked to the

next pawn. o After answering two questions (either correctly or incorrectly), pawns must tag in another player from their team

to take their place. o The first team to make it to the other side of the grid is the winner!

(queen)6. The official was reading from which book of the Bible? (Isaiah)7. Name five consonants in the alphabet. (B, C, D, F, G, H, etc.)8. When Philip got to the chariot, what did he ask the official? (Do you understand what you’re reading?)9. Did the official understand what he was reading? (Nope! He needed someone to help explain it.)10. What month is this? (July)11. Did Philip help the Ethiopian official understand what he was reading? (yes)12. Philip told the man all about how to follow who? (Jesus)13. Spell the word “follow.”14. As they traveled along the road, the men came to what? (water)15. What did Philip do when they found the water? (He baptized the Ethiopian official.)16. Uniqueness is discovering who God made you to be, so you can what? (make a difference)17. When the official came out of the water, how do you think he felt? (happy; joyful)18. Today we learned that God made you to follow who? (Jesus)19. If you had been Philip, would you have stopped to help the man understand what he was reading? 20. Spell the word “unique.”

WHAT YOU SAY:“Great job, everyone! You really listened to our story today. Philip was able to tell the Ethiopian official that [Bottom Line] God made you to follow Jesus. And that is true for you too! You can follow Jesus by believing in Him and what He did for you when He died and rose again. As you learn more and more about what Jesus did for you, your relationship with God grows.

[Make It Personal] (Tell your group about how you first learned about Jesus and made a choice to follow Him. Talk about your unique faith story and remind the kids that their faith story will be unique too. Be sensitive to any questions the kids may ask about trusting Jesus, and be prepared to let parents know if their child is expressing interest in following Him.) “I love my relationship with God and I’m so thankful that someone helped me like Philip helped the official. You can always ask me or your parents or another trusted adult if you have any questions about what it means to follow Jesus. Remember: [Bottom Line] God made you to follow Jesus.”

• Ask the teams to dump their pieces onto the floor. Point out how the pieces don’t automatically fall into place. Ask: What do you need to do to put the pieces together?

• Once kids realize they need instructions, let them spend a few minutes trying to put the puzzle together or build the LEGO set without instructions.

• When they seem to be stuck, give kids the instructions or box lid to put the pieces together.• When completed, let them show their LEGO creation or puzzle to the rest of the group.

WHAT YOU SAY:“When you dumped the pieces out on the floor, what happened? (Pause for responses.) You can’t just dump out the pieces and expect them to come together on their own. There is an order to the way things are put together. And you have to follow that order found in [the directions or on the picture from the box]. The [picture or instructions] show you how everything fits together. God made you in a unique way. And He has a BIG purpose for your life. But the BIG thing God wants you to do is to follow Jesus. Jesus came to earth, He grew up just like you, and then He died for your sins and rose again all so that you and I could have a relationship with God. What an awesome Savior! [Bottom Line] God made you to follow Jesus.”

3. PUT IT TOGETHER VERSE (memory verse activity)WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, LEGO bricks or puzzle pieces from the previous activity

(us) o What are some examples of “good works”?• Pass out a LEGO brick or puzzle piece to each child.• Go around the circle and let each child say a word of the verse as they add a LEGO or puzzle piece to the one before.

(NOTE: If the kids want to put the LEGO creation or puzzle pieces back together in they way they were intended, make sure the instructions or box lid are available.)

WHAT YOU SAY:“We are God’s creation and He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. That’s another way of saying that [Bottom Line] God made you to follow Jesus. I’m so thankful that God made each one of you and already has big plans for your life. I want to challenge you to look for opportunities to do good works this week!”

PRAY AND DISMISSWHAT YOU NEED: Handheld mirror

WHAT YOU DO: • Have the kids pass the mirror around the circle and say the words: “I was made to follow Jesus.”• Let the kids spend a few minutes praying that God will help them follow Jesus this week.• Pray as a group to close out your small group time.
