History of Mornington Golf ClubMornington started its life in 1904 on a tract of land name Cook’s Paddock behind the current

Tanti Hotel (on Nepean Highway) and stretched from the old railway to Beleura Hill Road.

With the outbreak of World War One and the subsequent upheaval it brought, it appears that the club did not conduct any further golfing events from 1915 until 1925, when a new course was established at Mornington racecourse. a nine-hole layout was then in play, mainly inside the track but with some of the tees on the outside.

Play became impossible after the military took occupancy of the racecourse during World War two and in 1941 the committee of the day negotiated for Mornington members to play on a nine-hole private course at the Dava lodge Guesthouse on the corner of Dava Drive and the esplanade.

The most significant move, however, came in 1946 when a lease was taken out from Sir George Tallis for 110 to 120 acres to create a golf course at beleura hill.

The President and the Secretary conferred with officials at Kew, Yarra bend and commonwealth Golf clubs and sloan Morpeth was consulted regarding the suitability of the proposed site.

he reported that it: “was excellent golf country, the surroundings admirable, the position very good, the soil

very good, and although the country was a little steep towards Sunnyside Creek, in my opinion a first class golf course could be created.” Mornington Members of today are in total agreement!

As with all projects such as this there were difficult times especially so soon after the war but the first nine holes were opened with much fanfare on Saturday 29th April 1950.

Work on the other nine holes was then well on the way and they were opened not long after.

an agreement with the tallis family to purchase the land was subsequently approved, meaning the club was now in control of its own destiny.

the original clubhouse on our current site was an old Army hut that was purchased for 151 pounds. It was indeed a far cry from the excellent facilities Members enjoy today!

Mornington Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 2004 and continues to enjoy a reputation as one of the best courses in the Melbourne region.

The Course

No matter what your age or ability the spectacular course at Mornington offers a genuine challenge to players of all skill levels.

The 18-hole layout measures 6,010 metres off the men’s blue tees, playing to a par of 72. The ladies play the 8th (a par 5 for the men) as a shorter par 4 and are given that shot back on the tough 11th hole, playing it as a par 5.

the wide fairways on some of the holes may appear forgiving from the tee for the first-time visitor, but there is a twist in the tail, with several slopes meaning

that a shot straight down the middle is not always the optimum line.

rather than being unfair, these natural variations merely add to the challenge and are more easily overcome the more times you play the

course. likewise the blind crests on some holes and the well-placed bunkers around the greens waiting to catch out the unwary.

the short holes at Mornington live long in the memory. there are four challenging par 3s where players hit to a green that is either well above or

below the tee box adding to the challenge of selecting the right club.

the 7th is one such hole and even if you are not fortunate enough to make birdie here, the azure skies of a cloudless Mornington Peninsula day will

leave you with happy memories of not only one of the most visually stunning holes on the course, but in arguably the whole of the state of Victoria.

head Professional Michael faraone says: “Generally it takes new Members a few months to get a handle on the greens, they are very tricky and

undulating with subtle breaks that require experience to read.

“to play well at Mornington you will need to get a feel for how the sloping fairways affect shots. You will also need to learn not to be distracted by the amazing views.”

Tour the CourseWe hope you enjoy your time with us at Mornington Golf Club. Here are a few useful tips and course notes which should help you make

the most of your round if you have never visited us before.

Hole 1, 302 metres, par 4

a straight-forward hole to start your round. an iron from the tee will leave a simple short iron for your approach. the longer hitters may want to take on the bunkers.

Hole 2, 451 metres, par 5

up a rise and dogleg left to a challenging green with undulations and plenty of turn depending on the pin position.

Hole 3, 345 metres, par 4

a warning to right-handers - a slice from the tee and a watery grave awaits. a ball guided down the left-hand side will set you up for the perfect approach.

Hole 4, 380 metres, par 4

trouble left and right of the tee leaves only one option. after placing your ball with precision, a second shot to a tight green protected by a bunker short left awaits.

Hole 5, 140 metres, par 3

One of the easier holes on the course - unless you’re above the hole when the greens are running fast. a short to mid-iron (depending on wind) to a large green with bunkers on the right.

Hole 6, 350 metres, par 4

What appears to be an easy tee shot to a wide fairway is quite deceptive. the fairway, which slopes left to a large area of rough and tea trees, allows only a small landing area up the right-hand side. Your second is to a small green but is quite open.

Page 11: Premier 52pp Brochure Mornington GC

morningtongolf.com.au | 11

Hole 7, 205 metres, par 3

One of the most picturesque holes on the course with panoramic views of the bay from both tee and green. a large green protected by bunkers on the right and grassy undulations on the left - a real challenge on a day when the wind blows on this exposed hole.

Hole 8, 438 metres, par 5

a straight-forward hole which is reachable in two for the long-hitter - aim up the right-hand side of the fairway to avoid trouble.

Hole 9, 371 metres, par 4

after negotiating the strong dogleg right which is protected by large trees, you are still faced with a challenging approach shot to the relatively small green.

Hole 10, 164 metres, par 3

after guiding your ball through the gums that surround the tee, a fairly large and receptive green awaits your ball. short and right you have a bunker to contend with. long and you face a very difficult return up a steep slope to a fast green that slopes away.

Hole 11, 405 metres, par 4

the longest par four on the course. a straight, wide fairway with a large elongated green to finish. Easy to reach in a north westerly - nearly impossible in an easterly.

Hole 12, 346 metres, par 4

a reasonably straight-forward hole. the right-hander needs to avoid a slice off the tee to avoid a watery grave. for the second shot, short right a bunker awaits, long and left another chance to test your fate with the water.

Page 12: Premier 52pp Brochure Mornington GC

12 | morningtongolf.com.au

Hole 13, 380 metres, par 4

One of Mornington’s signature holes. either lay up short of the fairway bunker for a mid to long-iron approach or take on the corner. the undulating green is protected by a series of bunkers, short left and right, and long right.

Hole 14, 510 metres, par 5

the longest hole on the course. a snaking dogleg right then left with a series of bunkers on the right-hand side of the fairway. Fire your third shot straight at Melbourne (on a clear day) to a small green to finish.

Hole 15, 342 metres, par 4

the second hole of “amen corner” which includes fourteen through seventeen. this hole traverses the cliff top with an undulating fairway to a protected green. Degree of difficulty is ten with a south westerly blowing.

Hole 16, 129 metres, par 3

Known as the “volcano” for obvious reasons when you stand on the tee. a relatively short shot to a large green should not prove too much of a challenge if you can put the bunkers and gully in front out of your mind. Difficulty increases with wind on this exposed hole.

Hole 17, 318 metres, par 4

the start of the homeward stretch. a straight tee shot will set you up nicely for your approach to the tiered green.

Hole 18, 464 metres, par 5

a slight dogleg right leads you back to a grand-stand finish at the clubhouse. If you can keep your ball straight the only trouble is the bunker short left of the green, or if you hit it long on a saturday afternoon, the gallery will have plenty of advice!

Practice FacilitiesMornington Golf Club provides extensive practice facilities

to allow the golfer to work on improving their game. The addition of a recently laid strip of artificial turf

means you are guaranteed a perfect lie all year round.

the practice areas are for Members only, with the exception of social players wishing to warm up prior to their hit-off time.

Practice facilities are often overlooked when considering an application for golf club membership. but they are a vital component in what is surely every golfer’s aim - to lower their handicap and to play to the best of their ability.

even having tuition from the world’s best golf instructors is practically worthless unless you have other components - the time available

to dedicate to practice and the amenities available to ingrain what you have learnt so that it becomes second nature.

any experienced golfer will appreciate the quickest and easiest way for the average player to drop their handicap is by sharpening up the short game and Mornington scores particularly highly here in terms of practice

facilities with putting and chipping greens and a practice bunker.

There real ly is no excuse not to become a better player!

Members’ GolfMornington Golf Club is a great choice of club for players searching for competitive golf in all its forms, with pennant and friendly Club fixtures, a host of silverware to battle for

each year in the Club’s own prestigious competitions and much social golf on offer.

as with many other clubs, there is no competition more important to Mornington Members than the annual pennants, which feature clubs playing a series of matches against each other through the golfing season for the right to win that season’s pennant, or flag.

We have our men in Division One of the Peninsula District Golf association Pennant which sees teams of seven players a side enjoying singles matchplay competition against their peers over a season that starts in March and runs until the end of april or early May.

the best performing teams get to battle for the honours in a pennant final each year, while promotion and relegation at the end of the campaign ensures competition is keen right to the end of the season even if the pennant itself is out of reach.

Mornington Golf Club’s Women field teams in both Division One and Division two of their pennant competition, which follows a similar format to that of the men.

With four teams competing in the Masters pennants and a Junior team also enjoying pennant play, there really is every opportunity to enjoy competitive interclub golf whatever your age.

Pennant play is the perfect chance to experience the pressure of competition and the thrill of representing one’s home club. it also provides the opportunity to play on some of the area’s other outstanding golf courses when they are at their best.

a number of golf clubs are now allowing public access during competition times for unused member tee times, but not Mornington. here you get a true Private Golf course experience on competition days.

Page 25: Premier 52pp Brochure Mornington GC

morningtongolf.com.au | 25

the club has the good fortune to have many major events on its calendar continuously supported by all Members.

Much competitive golf is offered in a variety of formats, and with singles and foursomes, strokeplay and matchplay, single-day events and others run on a knockout basis over the course of the season, there really is something to appeal to everyone.

the ladies classic, a two-day event, is now in its 7th year and is growing in popularity with over 42 clubs Australia-wide taking part in January 2015.

Pride of place, though, goes to the respective club championships, with trophies awarded annually to the outstanding male and female golfers. it is not a title earned cheaply or awarded lightly with four rounds of golf, for instance, needed to find the best male player of the year.

Winners take their place in the Mornington history books on our honour roll of the year which is on display in the Members’ lounge.

Men have competition days on Monday, Wednesday, saturday and sunday depending on their level of membership. ladies’ competition days take place on tuesday, thursday and sunday, also depending on membership. there are also Mixed competitions held approximately once a month on a sunday.

Members are also able to play the course outside of competition times, however it is always advisable to phone ahead to make a time or book a tee-time on line.

book in advance to be sure of a spot.
