Potential Ignition Sources which can carry enough Energy to start an Explosion (acc. EN 1127-1):

• Hot surfaces• Flames • Sparks from electrical equipment• Electrical equipment and lights• Stray currents from electrical equipment• Electrostatic discharge sparks• Lightning strikes• Electromagnetic fields in frequencies from 9 kHz up to 300 GHz• Electromagnetic radiation in frequencies from 300 GHz up to 3x106 GHz

and of different wavelengths from 1,000 µm up to 0.1 µm (optical spectral range)• Ionizing Radiation• Ultrasonic• Adiabatic compression, shock wave, running gases• Chemical reaction• And not to forget: the human factor which turns all potential ignition sources

into effective ones.

In 4 steps to a safer process…

1. Explosion preventionAvoid the occurrence of an explosion

• Replace combustible materials by non-combustible materials• Avoid materials with a fine particle size. Note: fines are often produced e. g. by handling a coarse product• Limit concentration of combustible material used• Use sealed plants to prevent dust releases and deposits inside buildings or outside• Use dust extraction systems to control the extent of a dust cloud• Implement good Housekeeping (regular cleaning plan) -> see also point 3• Minimize flat surfaces, ledges to prevent dust deposits• Use an inert gas blanketing where useful and economic

Avoid effective ignition sources

• Limit surface temperatures below 2/3 of minimum ignition temperature of a dust cloud or 75 K below minimum ignition temperature of a dust layer (e.g. broken bearings, friction, etc.)

• Avoid rubbing, contact of rotating parts (limit rotational speed, choice of materials, separation distance, avoid tramp metal)

• Use a permit-to-work system to control hot-work (welding, cutting, etc.)• Prohibit smoking and open fire in general• Install appropriate electrical and non-electrical equipment• Avoid electrostatic charge generation (choice of materials - earthing measures - effective bonding)• Spark detection and extinguishing• Consider all other ignition sources (e. g. self-heating, lightning)

2. Constructional explosion protectionLimit the dangerous consequences of an explosion

• Explosion-resistant design (explosion-pressure-resistant or explosion-pressure shock resistant)• Explosion venting• Explosion suppression• Explosion isolation, decoupling (prevention of explosion propagation)

3. Organizational measures

• Comprehensive operator education and training• Operator instructions, cleaning plans, good housekeeping• Adequate maintenance• Permit-to-work system for welding, hot-work and electrical operations (authorized persons only)

4. Building precautions

• Isolation of buildings and equipment to prevent transmission of fires and explosion• Fire zones, clearly marked Hazardous Zones (Ex) / Explosion protection document• Sealed and tight piping and conveying systems• Smooth surfaces and easy-to-clean floors, easy access to elevated plant areas

An explosion is defined as 'A rapidincrease in volume and release ofenergy in an extreme manner', usu-ally accompanied with the genera-tion of high temperatures and therelease of gases. An explosion createsa 'shock wave'.

Most common reactions are offlammable gases, vapors and crackeddusts - together with ambient oxy-gen. As a result of modern produc-tion technologies and increasedproduction capacities, an explosion isa threat companies confront daily.Manufacturing processes whichcreate organic or chemical dust cau-sed by faster machines, automaticconveying systems and air cleaningequipment increase the risk of a dustexplosion. The finer the dust particle, the more severe the explosion willbe.

International guidelines includingNFPA 68, 69, ATEX 114 (valid for ma-

nufacturers of machines and plants)or ATEX 153 (valid for operating com-panies) require companies to consi-der the consequences of a dustexplosion to injured workers and da-maged production plants.

Additionally, the economic risk tothe company due to plant shutdown, contaminated product or adverse pu-blicity requires consideration.

Special attention is required when eli-minating all possible potential sources ofignition such as; Mechanical or Electricallyproduced 'sparks', Frictional heat, Elec-trostatic charges (See note* below), Wel-ding equipment etc. Not forgetting ofcourse, the human factor.

Due to the seemingly endless sourcesfor potential ignitions it is not hard toimagine the difficulty in eliminating themall. Removal of the fuel is impossible asthis is what is being produced by the pro-cess in the plant that we are considering

protecting. Removal of Oxygen is feasiblebut can only be achieved through vary ex-pensive processing. The security limitshere are also rapidly reached and the riskof a dust explosion cannot be excluded. Therefore a constructive and efficient ex-plosion protection regime is required andessential.

THREE BASIC REQUIREMENTSHAVE TO BE CONSIDERED IN A MODERN EXPLOSIONPROTECTION SOLUTION:

1. PROFITABILITYThe protection solution has to beeconomical to implement, operateand maintain.

2. RELIABILITYThe protected facility has toremain permanently and optimallyavailable for production. A breakin daily operations, due to falsetriggering, must be avoided.

3. SAFETYPeople and machine must beinsured of an explosion protectedenvironment, through constructiveand effective directives.

ALL OF THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE MET BY REMBE EXPLOSION

SAFETY SYSTEMS.

EX-GO-VENT

EX-GO-VENT explosion panels on filter system: Holtrop & Jansma, NLEX-GO-VENT explosion panels protecting a biomass handling facility

EX-GO-VENT rectangular- and trapezium explosion panels

Single Layer Explosion Panel for low vacuum

This Explosion Panel suits most standardapplications such as silos, filters, bucketelevators, bunkers, cyclones at operatingpressures or vacuum of 50 % of pstat. The standard burst pressure is 0.1 barg(1.45 psig) @ 22 °C (71.6 °F).

The EX-GO-VENT incorporating bionicstructures (Pat. No. EP 07 73 393) guaran-tees extraordinary stability. The flat, sin-gle-layer explosion panel has a perfectventing efficiency due to its low weight. As dead spaces and product deposits areeliminated the EX-GO-VENT is also suit-able for sterile applications, e.g. food industry.

Unlike other manufacturers options theEX-GO-VENT is NOT torque dependentduring installation. Typically, mounting isdirectly made onto even walls or roundshaped equipment, e.g.; cyclones, filters, silos, etc. Controlling the clamp torqueof the screws becomes unnecessary.

Your benefits at a glance:

Quick and easy mounting

Sanitary installation avoidsdeposits and bacteria formation

EDP

Explosion Venting of a filter with EDP explosion panels

…for cycling working pressures at low to medium vacuum

The Single Layer EDP explosion panel is recommended for protection againstfluctuating or cyclic working pressures of silos, filters, bucket elevators, bunkers, cylones. The Domed construction pro-

vides high stability up to a pressure ratio of 70 %. The rated breaking points(Pat. No. EP 07 73 393) are integratedwithin the mounting frame. The stan-dard burst pressure pstat is 0.1 barg (1.45 psig) at @ 22 °C (71.6 °F) at a vacuum resistance of max. 2,000 mm WC.

The Domed construction also greatly reduces contamination. Sterility andcleaning is simplified (SIP/CIP Cleaning).Usually the EDP is mounted directly ontoa Wall. Installation of the EDP VentFrame is uncomplicated and is NOT torque dependent.

…for cycling working pressures and high to FULL Vacuum

The ODV triple section explosion panel ismanufactured of three layers and provi-des an improved vacuum resistance, asturdy construction and extraordinary reliability. It is suitable for the harshestworking conditions combined with frequent cycling working pressures, e.g. filter facilities with low volume and regular pneumatic cleaning.

ODVs are applied to working pressuresup to 80 % of the specified burst pressu-re (80 % operating ratio). Due to its tri-ple section design customized solutionswith high temperature protection and/or

the combination of different alloy materials can be realised.

The angled frame guarantees sufficientcontact force in the clamping zone of the explosion panel. Round triple sec-tion bursting discs are clamped betweenstandard DIN or ANSI flanges and in thepunched design between lightweight angled rings. Rectangular explosion panels are generally mounted betweenangled or flat frames.

ODU

ACCESSORIES / OPTIONS

Signalling

Insulation / Gaskets

Actuation of Bursting discs and explosion panels can be detected by utilising a signaling cable. The Signalling device is ultra lowcurrent, is intrinsically safe and operates on a simple Open-Closedprinciple (normally closed). Different standard types areavailable:

Type SK The Signalling cable is installed at thebreaking point of the disc/panel. Whenthe disc/panel actuates, the closed circuitis interrupted due to the cable break. The Signalling cable is a well proven reli-able method. No additional assembly isrequired. No moveable parts remain. Itsuits for temperatures from +90 °C to+200 °C (194 °F to 392 °F)

Type BIRDThe BIRD signalling unit is offered forexisting Bursting disc or explosion panelinstallations without installed a signal-ling device. A ceramic bar incorporatingelectrical conductors is mounted in theflow direction downstream of thedisc/panel. When the disc/panel actuatesthe element breaks (fragments) and theclosed circuit is interrupted.

Type HOT-BIRDThis signalling device is high tempera-ture resistant up to 400 °C (752 °F).

Type RSKDesign and identical with the integratedsignalling device SK. Existing installedpanels/discs may be retrofitted with theRSK signalling device.

Signal evaluationFor signal evaluation commercial trans-former isolated barriers with relay out-put which guarantee an intrinsically safeelectric circuit are available. The poten-tial of free relay output is used for alertand safe shutdown of plant facilities.

Assembly AccessoriesIf required assembly kits comprising of frames with corresponding bolts and nuts are available in GalvanizedSteel or Stainless Steel.

External InsulationIn order to avoid dew point temperatureand when specified REMBE Burstingdiscs/ panels are manufactured with aweatherproof insulation, especially incase of food applications or for thermalinsulation. Only closed-cell elastomerwith reflecting high efficient coating isused. The insulation is permanently connected to the disc/panel and is ofultra light weight. It has no impact oradverse effect on the functionality andburst rating of the relieving device.

The Q-Rohr-3 explosion protection system is a proven reliable product. It has been designed and engineeredfollowing extensive research and development culminating in the most innovative and efficient flameless venting product on the world markettoday.

The consistent demand from our customers is the needfor a protection system where the flame and dust distri-

bution can be limited to a point where the system can bekept indoors. The Q-Rohr-3 has been designed with custo-

mer driven criteria such as; zero maintenance, unlimited life-span, huge reduction in the generated temperatures and effec-

tive dust retention. The Q-Rohr-3 has been proven to meet all of these demands. In a thermo graphical investigation of a dust

explosion, it has been recorded that when using a Q-Rohr-3 there isa huge reduction in temperatures generated.

PROVEN SAFETY FOR EQUIPMENT IN ANY LOCATION

Q-Rohr-3 Pat.-Nos. DE 38 22 012US 7,905,244

After cleaning the flame arrester and exchanging the bursting disc, the Q-Rohr is ready for use again.

The Q-Rohr-3 system is the only indoorexplosion device that meets the NFPAcodes and is approved in accordancewith EU regulations (ATEX). It consists ofan integrated REMBE Bursting discwhich vents the explosion wave in a con-trolled manner within the Q-Rohr-3 as-sembly. Flame gases with temperatureshigher than 500° C (2,732° F) are cooleddown to less than 90° C (195° F) via ener-gy transfer within the specially develo-ped stainless steel mesh filter inlet. Thisreduces the expanding gas volume as itextinguishes the flame. Dust retention isguaranteed by the mesh filter ensuringthat no burnt or unburnt dust particlespass through the Q-Rohr-3 assembly. Ad-ditionally, the pressure rise and increa-sed noise level associated with free ven-ted explosions are massively reduced tonegligible levels. After an explosionevent the Q-Rohr-3 is reusable immedia-tely after cleaning and replacement ofthe REMBE Bursting Disc assembly.

Protection of pipes and vessels

Explosion suppression system a big hopper

Explosion Suppression

Plant components like silos, mills, filters, collectors, mixers or dryers, in whichcombustible dusts or bulks are proces-sed, conveyed or stored are hazardous incase of sufficient fine dust. If ignitionsources cannot reliably excluded con-structive and efficient explosion protecti-on solutions are required.

With use of the Q-Bic suppression systemthe starting explosion is rapidly detectedby the redundant p-RED detectors andthe explosion flame is extinguished dueto the prompt blowing out of drypowder in the endangered area. It extinguishes the explosion at the pointof ignition. The explosion cannot be dis-charged to the outside atmosphere. Q-Bic is especially suitable for applicati-ons with toxicant materials, which mightnot be released in case of explosion.

Explosion Isolation

Plant components with constructive explosion protection regime are ofteninterconnected via big pipes or rectan-gular shafts with further apparatus. Ifthese pipes or shafts convey combustibledusts or bulks the single apparatus haveto be isolated against explosions. Thisway the explosion spreading in furtherplant components is prevented as explo-sions are forwarded by flames but notby shock waves.

The Q-Bic explosion isolation system extinguishes the flame front of the ex-plosion which prevents the ignition ofthe flame jet with pre-compressed pres-sure in further apparatus. Comparedwith other systems, e.g. explosion bar-rier slide valves, the operational cost are considerably lower.

Your benefits at a glance:

Low investment in caseof low structural resistance

The EXKOP MINI controller has especially been developed for applications with 1 to 2 quench valves. Two separate in-puts (Bursting panels, Q-Rohr, spark de-tectors, etc.) can be combined with two QV II valves.

The use of the system is simple andworks acc. to the „one button easyhandling” philosophy. As usual all events are recorded by a ring storage memory.

Installation in any site, in any optional position!

Pat.-No. EP 05 59 968

The EXKOP system consists of a controllerand quench valves. It provides safe andeconomic and easy explosion-, spark- andflame front isolation. The quench valvesprotect interconnected equipment byhigh speed closure of a fast acting rubberhose.

The valve is triggered by 100 % reliablesignal from the maintenance-free triple-section Bursting disc, the Q-Rohr -3, Q-Box II or by IR-, pressure or tempe-rature sensors. The complete system is failsafe due to an integrated pressurestorage tank and selfmonitoring con-trol-

ler. In case of explosion the plant person-nel can reset the EXKOP system quicklyand easily after inspection. Plant downti-me is reduced to a minimum.

The compact design makes it possible to install the system at any site inde-pendently of the building-in position.Compared with the immense mass acceleration of knife gate valves duringclosing operation the space-savingquench valve does not require any special supporting structure, e. g. braces or bases.

Q-FlapCompact / Q-FlapCompact Plus

EXPLOSION ISOLATION

Your benefits at a glance:

Passive protection system

Reduced maintenancedue to monitoring

Short installation distances:Retrofitting of existing plantswithout changes in pipelinelayout

With the non-return explosion valve series Q-FlapCompact explosions in nearly all industrial sectors can effectively be isolated. The Q-FlapCompact is certified as a protective system acc. to EU guideline 94/9/EG (ATEX 114) and approved for decoup-ling explosions of organic and inorganic dusts.

Standard Operation

During operation the downstreammounted flap is kept open through theprocess air flow. In case of breakdownthe flap is closed due its own weight.Starting the system, the opening of theflap is damped.

Explosion Event

In case of an explosion the Q-Flap-Compact closes due to the pressure frontspreading within the ductwork. The fol-lowing explosion flame and the pressurecannot strike back the ductwork. Person-nel working at capturing points or down-stream system parts are protectedagainst the explosion effects.

The flap damping element prevents the flap to open shortly after an ex-plosion due the appearing low pressure. The passive non-return Q-FlapCompactprotects horizontal aspiration lines witha flow velocity between 15-30 m/s. Extensive research and testing under realexplosion conditions enabled approvalof the Q-FlapCompact for St 1 or St 2(max. KST-Value = 300 bar x m/s).Q-FlapCompact is applicable for reducedpressure (Pred) up to 0.5 bar (7.25 psi)

Monitoring with Q-FlapCompact Plus

Additionally the Q-FlapCompact Plus offers a wear-and-tear sensor that mo-nitors the abrasion that could possiblyoccur on the stainless steel flap. It is alsoequipped with an integrated cloggingsensor that indicates any kind of productaccumulation underneath the seatswhich ensures safe closing of the flap.
