    Introduction

    Greaves GP series planetary gearboxes in single/ double/ triple/ quadruple

    reduction models are intended to satisfy all the requirements of a reliable drivefor slow speed high torque applications. Standard range of Greaves GP series

    available in foot mounted and flange mounted versions, offer unparallelperformance covering ratio graduated from 3.75/1 to 2354/1 with power ratings

    ranging from 0.12Kw to 1500Kw.

    Greaves range of GP series planetary gearboxes and geared motors are

    designed, engineered and manufactured as per the standard recommendations

    of American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA).

    This catalogue contains specifications, dimensions and ratings for standard GP

    series. Our engineers will be pleased to assist in case of unusual conditions

    attracting special requirements.

    Salient Features

    Greaves GP series gearboxes are efficient, rugged, reliable andmaintenance free. They are compact and have high power to weight

    ratio.

    Greaves GP series gearboxes enable the users to save on power,cost of lubricant and cost on structurals.

    Greaves GPseries gearboxes are provided with two-ball bearingsper planet gear (in high speed stage) resulting in longer life of the

    sun/planet gear and pins.

    The planet mounted firmly between the carrier and the cageplate to avoid overhung of the planet gear on the carrier pin. Thus

    eliminating the possibility of the failure of sun and planet gears.

    Material Of Construction

    Sun & Planet Gears: Manufactured from high quality alloy case

    hardening steel for long life, wear resistant and fatigue strength.

    Ring Gear: Manufactured from high alloy steel, nitride hardened to

    absorb impact loads and provide desired wear resistance.

    Gear Housing: Manufactured from nodular cast iron/cast steel/mild steelaccording to the power to be transmitted. Are designed rigidly to absorb

    vibration and support reactionary loads.

    Bearings: Ball bearing/ Needle bearings of reputed make used for the

    planet gear. Depending on the speed and power to be transmitted,Input/Output shafts are mounted on Taper roller/ Ball bearing/ Spherical

    roller bearings of appropriate size for longer life.

    Shafts: Manufactured from through hardened alloy steel, with optimum

    diameter as per IS standard for transmitting maximum torque.

    Shaft Seals

    Shaft extensions are fitted with spring loaded nitrile rubber seals toprevent outflow of oil. In case of flange mounting units with output shaft

    projecting downwards, double nitrile rubber seals are provided foreffective sealing.

    Lubrication

    Lubrication of Gears and Bearings is entirely self-contained by automatic

    splash which provides ample and positive flow of oil resulting minimumwear and noise. Recommended oil is of ISO: VG 320 viscosity grade with

    EP additives. No special care is required except occasional topping up ofthe oil to specified quantity. All units are provided with combined dipstick,

    ventilator and drain plugs.

    In some cases, it is necessary to use a forced lubrication system with a

    separate oil tank. These are marked in the rating tables.Since the gearbox is supplied without oil the casing should be filled withthe correct quantity of recommended oil before running.

    Electrical

    Electric motors provided with Greaves planetary geared motor is TEFC,

    squirrel cage induction motors suitable for operation on 415V(+/-10%),3phase, 50c/s (+/-5%), AC supply with IP protection and class F

    insulation (utilized to class B limits). Units with electric motor of specialdesign e.g. flameproof construction, crane duty motor, extended shaft

    motor, motor with built in electromagnetic bake etc. can be offeredagainst specific requirements.

    Mechanical Ratings & Service Factors

    Greaves GP series planetary gearboxes are designed for steady loading

    with fairly small mass acceleration, which includes periodic momentary

    overloads up to four times per hour to an extend of 100% (starting or

    braking). When used under such operating conditions (i.e. on continuousduty with occasional peak loads), it is not necessary to increase the size

    for an additional service factor.

    If the unit is subjected to sustained overloads or to shock loads, thesemust be reflected in the chosen service factor. If overloads can be

    calculated or estimated then the actual loads should be used instead offactor. When detailed operating conditions are not available table 3,

    gives a guide to the load characteristics of many variedapplications, and should be used to determine appropriate service

    factors from table 1.

    When selecting units use the actual load transmitted and not the rating ofthe prime mover, and wherever possible use output torque (Nm).

    Catalogues also give input power (Kw), being the power, which the primemover must provide to allow for losses in the gear unit.

    Thermal Rating

    Thermal rating measures the units ability to dissipate heat. If they areexceeded the lubricant may overheat and breakdown, with consequent life

    failure. Both mechanical and thermal ratings are given for all units.

    Thermal ratings are affected by ambient temperature and not bymechanical considerations such as increased running time or shock loads.Cataloque ratings assume 40 degree Celsius ambient temperature, the oil

    temperature then rising as the units transmit power and generate heat.

    If the ambient temperature is more than 40degree Celsius, a lowertemperature rise is allowed therefore less power may be transmitted.

    Similarly in cooler temperatures the thermal rating may be exceeded.

    When selecting units use a service factor from Table 2 to calculate

    equivalent loads.

    For intermittent running with ample cooling time during rest periods,

    thermal ratings maybe exceeded without overheating.

    Selection Procedure

    The preliminary selection of a GP unit can be made from the powerratings specified in the selection charts. Once the preliminary selection

    has been made the external influencing factors must be taken into

    consideration. Torque demanded by the application should not exceed thelimits specified.

    In case of an electric motor of 4P/6P/8P,the unit rated for the input speedand the torque can be directly selected from the selection table. The next

    step is to consider the service factors (Both Mechanical & thermal)demanded by the application. Refer table of service factors (Table 1 & 2)

    for the same. Then the unit selected should satisfy the followingrelation.

    Sf = Service factor selected

    Pf = Rated power of the unit specified in the chart

    In all the case of an oil-hydraulic motor the following formula may

    be used to determine the input torque (Ti)

    Ti = V x P x Eh Nm

    The following formula is used to calculate the output torque (To)

    R = Reduction ratio of the gear unit

    Eg = Efficiency of the gear reducer (98% per

    Stage)

    For selecting an ideal gear unit the following relation should be

    satisfied

    Tr > or = To x Sf

    Where Tr = Rated output torque of selected unit in Nm

    Thermal capacity (Pt) = Absorbed power (Kw)/ Thermal SF from Table2

    Pt must be < or = Thermal capacity of the gearbox

    Overhung loads

    Greaves GP series planetary gearboxes are fitted with Taper roller/ Ball

    bearing/ Spherical roller bearings for accommodating normal overhungloads imposed by the application. Whenever sprocket, gear, sheave orpulley is mounted on the output shaft, a calculation must be made to

    determine the overhung load in Newtons on the shaft, using following

    formula.Pn = Kw x 9550000 x K Newtons

    The calculated overhung load should be compared with the permissible

    values given in Table 4. For GP series units with higher overhung loads
