PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS
Wasatch Academy gets first t it le
In its 136th year, Wasatch Academy won its first boys' basketball championship. Led by 1A MVP Evaldas Aniulis and flashy guard Jarryn Skeete, the Tigers finished 21-3 and outscored their opponents by an average of 25 points per game — the highest in the state.
All in the fam i ly
Nick Emery and T.J. Haws are cutting fresh tracks in their own right, but it can't be overlooked that this year Lone Peak's super duo accomplished something already done by their older brothers. Jackson Emery won a state title with the Knights in 2005, and Tyler Haws led Lone Peak to titles in 2007 and 2008.
Only one team repeated
Wasatch High, in 3A, was the only team to win a second-straight championship this year. South Summit lost in the 2A championship to South Sevier, while 5A Alta, 4A Timpview and 1A Bryce Valley all lost in early rounds. Bountiful upended the Thunderbirds in the first round.
Highland Rams reign in two sports
For the second year in a row, the school that won the 4A championship also won the 4A football t itle earlier in the school year. Highland did it in both sports this year, and Timpview accomplished the feat last year.
Eagles' Jackson a scoring machine
Skyline junior guard Jaden Jackson led the state in scoring, averaging 24.9 points per game. Skyline finished 10-13 and was eliminated in the first round of the 5A tournament by Bingham. Jackson's best game came on Jan. 4 against East, when he poured in 40 points.
