Prep NewsletterWeek 5
Prep Family BBQIt was wonderful to see so many families at the Prep BBQ.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff who ran the evening and to Mrs Bek Volz and Mrs Monique Flowers
who create and care for the amazing Garden area. We are so incredibly fortunate to have such
passionate staff members who allow our students to enjoy wonderful experiences in this beautiful space.
LiteracyStudents have now been introduced to 12 letters and the sounds that they make.
Some letters make multiple sounds and the below table shows you the sounds that they make in words.
Students have learnt the character that represents each letter and their song.
Each day, we practise the phonograms and their sounds. We have also been learning how to correctly
form each letter and how to write sounds that we hear in words.
If your child would like to listen to the songs you can find them on Youtube or the Letterland album is on
Spotify.
Numeracy
In Numeracy this week, our focus has been on the correct formation of numbers. We each had our own
booklet to practise the formation of each number and we also began to look at shapes.
Each class went on a ‘Shape Walk’ and searched for shapes in our world around us. We looked at
classifying each shape and their features.

Reminders • Just a reminder that PE is on Tuesdays so your
students may like to wear runners.
• Swimming Notices are due back March 3rd.
You will receive further information regarding
swimming soon.
• Library borrowing has now commenced.
Students are able to borrow two books a
week. They can be returned any day to the
library box in their classroom. Please keep the
library bag with the books as this stops books
from getting ruined in school bags.
Prep S & Prep M’s borrowing day is Tuesday
and Prep W borrow books on Thursdays.
Assembly & Student Awards
Congratulations to those students who have
received their class’ first awards for the year.
Each student will receive a class award
throughout the year. You can find the recipients
of the fortnight’s awards in the school newsletter.
This give you plenty of time to organise to be
able to attend the assembly on the following
Friday.
Please return Notice Folders each day so that we
are able to ensure notices make it home.
Inquiry-Based PlayAs part of our Unit of Inquiry ‘Who We Are,’ students take part in Inquiry-based play three
times a week. Students participate in activities that further explore concepts we have been
learning from Literacy, Numeracy and Unit of Inquiry.
Classes come together to participate in play-based learning and the children think that they
are ‘just playing,’ but we know that they are doing so much more.
‘Scientists have suggested that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse
in the brain, unless it is done through play, in which case it takes between 10 and 20
repetitions.’
This type of play allows students to be extended or have tasks scaffolded for them. It improves
and expands on their language skills, social skills and fine and gross motor skills. Students are
able to problem solve and use initiative and creativity at each activity.
We rotate activities every few weeks. Activities so far have included an Ice Cream Shop,
Letterland table, Construction Area, Emotions table, Alphabet Roads to drive cars on, Pom
Pom Sort with tweezers for fine motor, Cutting Tray, Classmate Match and Shape Sort.
