    REVISED POSITION STATEMENT AND RATIONALE

    Within the Final Major Project OUGD303 Module I intend on producing a well considered and thought outquantity of work, which reflects a level of professionalism and my interests within the Retail environment, witha focus on conceptually and illustration driven design solutions, of which the outcomes will display mycreativity through printing production and finishing.

    Within the module I hope to gain a strong body of work, which emulates the retail sector, through a carefully

    considered selection of briefs. Through working with Retail, I hope to gain a balance of skills throughproducing a range of packaging, advertising, promotional, and interior product design material which willreflect my interests within image and illustration.

    GENERAL THEMES:

    Within OUGD303 I intend on selecting a range of briefs which reflect my ownpersonal interests, fitting to specific areas of the Industry. This will be achievedthrough developing a large level of research into the areas of the industry Iminterested, through chosen briefs. I intend to create a body of work which containsa running theme and subject matter, which shows a growing developmentthroughout the module.

    Sumo NewcastleProduces work for the arts and culture sector, with a very creative andambitious approach to work.

    Made by Analogue MorleyTheir portfolio explores a range of stock and exploration of material, and use an array ofprinting methpds. They describe themselves as having an open mind toward design style.

    We are unit - LeedsIts work is so varied in design style, and has an array of categories; print, illustration, 3Dand typography. Its design ideas are so unique and pushes the boundaries within design.

    Studio Mikmik - LeedsGraphic design and illustration company, their portfolio is highly driven by printand print processes and utilise every way to reduce the amount of paper and energy used

    Within the module OUGD303 I intend on investigating and exploring conceptualdevelopment, focusing my briefs to be concept led rather than product led, byexploring a range of avenues and driving my focus and interest toward theoutcome of well thought out, considered and evaluated research. With a strongconcept led body of work within my portfolio, it will help me in the communication

    stages of talking to professionals and designers about my work and gaininginterest. This is another important area of the practice I want to concentrate on,retaining existing contacts, and gaining new ones through a range of studio visits,placements and events. The exploration and us of printing processes I believe isan important element to my work, and my style, so I intend on pushing myknowledge and use of in college processes, along with contacting professional

    printers, to gain proffesionally printed products, and contacts.

    DESIGN SKILLS

    What practical design skills doyou intend to further develop andapply during your final majorproject. What do you intend to usethe skills for. Consider extendingthe use of skills that you already

    have in order to deliver work of aprofessional standard as well asidentifying new skills that you willneed to develop.

    A goal I set myself within the previous module was to improve my type and layoutskills, by pushing myself to do briefs which were led by this skill. At this stage Iwasnt sure of the area of the industry I wanted to work within, but now I haveidentified it to be retail so with this knowledge I can improve my type and layoutskills effectively by using them to the appropriate product: such as packaging,advertising and promotional material. This will, as a result, give me a strongbalance between image and craft, and type and layout.

    Last year I pushing my knowledge and use of printing processes and began torealize my work relied on printing past the digital stages. My design style reallyworks well with more thought out and hands on printing methods and finishes,there was a jump in the quality of my work from 2

    rdyear, this being a

    contributor. I want to push this further exploring as many techniques as possible,giving my work and portfolio and edge on others.One problem with print which did hold me back was my lack of ability andknowledge for setting documents up for print in both digital and screen print.This cost me time, and in some cases money, so I need to consider and researchhow to set up for print, rather than just doing it, and hoping it works. This will helpme to work more efficiently and professionally.

    Alongside this came crafting, which is something I want to explore more this year,the quality and use of it, along with trying something a bit different and a bit morechallenging, which I intend to do within my collaborative brief with Joe (Food forthought) pushing my image skills further.

    Once all products are finishes one problem I did have was the process of settingeverything up for the presentation boards, my skills in photography arent great soI need to improve this, I intend on doing so by buying myself an SLR camera andexploring the use of it. The layout and presentation of work I found difficult towardthe submission stages too. This again, I feel will only be improved through doing,
