Overview

CA Institute’s English Maturita courses are designed for students who are seeking to further expand their understanding and fluency in the English language in an effort to pass the Czech Maturita Exam at the end of their secondary school education. Goals

To improve the level of students’ understanding of a foreign language and to get the students to use the language in an effective manner to improve communication and allow them to pass their school leaving exam in English.

Icebreaker games. Go over course material and goals. Introduce yourself and get to know your classmates and teachers.

n Lesson 2

Family and relationships. Family vocabulary. Reading a short text about relationships and discuss it. Construct and describe their family tree. Review adjectives used to talk about people's appearance and personality.

Careers and jobs. Read and review job vocabulary. Match sentences with their endings. Listen and discuss people's opinions of employment. Write a letter of application.

n Lesson 4

The town I live in. Read about a Czech city and write and discuss your town using the text template. Review town vocabulary. Giving and following directions. Feedback.

n Lesson 5

Transport and Travel. Advantages and disadvantages of different modes of transport. Read text and comprehension check. Parts of car and plane vocabulary. Discuss travel and tourism using a series of pictures.

n Lesson 6

Seasons of the year, weather and nature. Match types of weather with season. Describe typical Czech seasons. Read and write a weather forecast. Match pictures with definitions of extreme weather.

n Lesson 7

Great Britain. Review of basic geographical facts with maps. Discussion of climate, people, government, economy, and places of interest. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Brief history of UK.

n Lesson 8

School and education. Read text about education in UK and USA. Compare to Czech system. School vocabulary.

n Lesson 9

The problems of mankind. Social issues: population growth, global warming, pollution, etc. Vocabulary connected to those issues, fill in the table. Writing a short essay on a social topic.

n Lesson 10

The USA. Basic facts about the United States: land and climate, government, people, regions. New York and other large American cities. Read brief history of USA, comprehension check.

n Lesson 11

Shops and shopping. Talk about different types of shopping available now. Class survey: Your buying habits. Vocabulary connected to money and spending money.

n Lesson 12

Traditions and holidays. Reading: Holidays in USA. Compare and contrast to Czech celebrations and holidays. Use picture prompts to discuss certain celebrations.

n Lesson 13

Housing, buildings, and furniture. Discuss the different types of housing. Vocabulary: rooms in a house and furniture. Label different rooms. Reading: My favorite room. Discuss your favorite room and describe it.

n Lesson 14

Communication. Read about and compare and contrast different means of communication. Which do you use on a daily basis? Vocabulary: expression of multi-media. Writing emails.

n Lesson 15

Canada. Basic facts about Canada: land and climate, government, economy, and places of interest. Read text and comprehension check. Some historical facts.

n Lesson 16

Cultural life. Review different types of arts, focusing on visual arts of painting and sculpture. Read about controversial artwork and give your opinion on it. Discuss different types of entertainment and television genres. Discuss conversation questions with partner. Survey classmates to determine their entertainment preferences.

n Lesson 17

Food and eating. Review food vocabulary. Reconstruct menu after studying it for 3 minutes. Talk about how to describe food and cooking. Role-play: at the restaurant.

n Lesson 18

Sports and Games. Reading: The Olympics. Comprehension questions. Vocabulary review: match sports pictures with name. Talk about rules and equipment of a game.

n Lesson 19

The Czech Republic. Basic facts: Land and climate, government, people, economy, and places of interest. Use photo prompts to talk about different places in the czech republic. General knowledge quiz.

n Lesson 20

Crime and punishment. Beat the Burglars quiz. Match vocabulary of crime, criminal, and verb. Discuss types of punishments and justice system.
