Preparations for Intracoronal

Restorations

Preparations for Intracoronal Restorations

Inlay is the simplest of the cast

restorations: occlusal, gingival, and proximal

lesions.

Replaces missing tooth structure without

doing anything to reinforce that which

remains.

Preparations for Intracoronal Restorations

Intracoronal restorations utilize:

"wedge" retention.

Preparations for Intracoronal Restorations

Mechanical cusp height = anatomic cusp height:

measured from cusp tip to the bottom of the

central groove.

Preparations for Intracoronal Restorations

An occlusal intracoronal preparation increases mechanical cusp height to a hazardous.

Preparations for Intracoronal Restorations

The recommended isthmus width has been

reduced to ¼ of the intercuspal distance.

Proximo-occlusal Inlays

MOD inlays that can be kept narrow

are acceptable for molars.

Proximo-occlusal Inlays

poor candidates for inlays: Poor OH Accumulations of plaque Recent history of caries In adolescence

Technique:

Occ. Outline: dove tailPulpal floor: flat, even depth: 1.5 mm.

Box length is an important factor in retention

Metal Inlay Variations

A class 1 inlay can be used to restore a moderately sized occlusal lesion in the mouth of a patient with predominantly gold restorations in other teeth.

Metal Inlay Variations

A 15_20 degree bevel

extends a 1/3 of the

way down the sides of

the isthmus wall.

Metal Inlay Variations

The class 3 inlay shows

metal, is useful for

restoring the distal

surface of canines.

Metal Inlay Variations

The class V inlay is used to restore severe abrasion or erosion as well as large caries on the gingivofacial aspect of molars

• 0.6-mm diameter pin holes to a depth of 3.0 mm• 45 degree bevel

MOD Onlays

MOD Onlays

Indications:

I. Deteriorating teeth with intact buccal

and lingual cusps.

II. MOD restorations with wide isthmuses.

III. Endodontically treated posterior teeth

with sound buccal and lingual tooth

structure.

MOD Onlays

functional cusp clearance: 1.5 mm .

A wide bevel is placed on the functional cusp

occlusal shoulder on the functional cusp:1mm wide, 1mm apical to occ. contact

MOD Onlays

The isthmus reinforces the restoration. It provides some retention and a great deal of resistance
