Goals of Speaker Readiness
Speaking at AU is Challenging
But you can do it!
Our goals today
To share our combined 35 years of AU presentation experience with you.
To help you plan your presentation.
To help you leverage resources.
To help you understand how to present to AU audiences.
To boost your confidence so you’ll kill it at AU 2017!

Basic Steps
Q. How do I get started?
A. By scripting out your story!
The Approach
Diagnostic questions to ask
What confused me when I learned this topic (mind mapping)?
What’s the easiest way to relate this to an individual via tutoring?
What data set will I need to support my presentation?
How can I best break a complex topic into digestible chunks?
“Proper prior planning prevents poor performance!” – Walter Davis
Now build your list
What confused you is your list of teaching points.
The way you’d tutor an individual is your teaching sequence.
The files you’d need to tutor effectively becomes your data set.
5 to 10 minute chunks are easiest to absorb (and give you escape points in case of presentation errors).
Time to do the research
Now that you know how you’ll explain your topic with simplicity its time to do the research on your course materials.
Get ready to channel your inner Einstein.
Q. Where do I find my resources?
A. From a variety of places – let’s see a few.

Q. How does my speaking style change my presentation?
A. It changes how you organize your slides and data!
Leverage Your Delivery Style
Tips for Speaking Styles The walker: Use simple graphics or
recorded demo videos so to interact more and sit less.
The sitter: Interrupt your demo with catchy graphics to break monotony (and stand up as you do so!)
The Shy Boy/Girl: Have a splashy graphic every so often to pump you up!
The Monotone: Inject excitement by sharing concepts you have a passion for.
Q. How can I plan to be dazzling at AU?
A. By following some simple Do and Don’t tips.
General Presentation Tips
Do’s and Don’ts: What To Do Do plan to be yourself!
Do plan to share your knowledge as a peer - not as a know it all.
Do use stories and share experiences – especially if humorous.
Do build your scripts and rehearse keeping these tips in mind.
Do’s and Don’ts: What Not To Do Don’t plan a boring tech talk.
Don’t forget real world context.
Don’t pontificate!
Don’t forget that you’re the MC, the DJ, the entertainer at AU.
Great Presentations Don’t Just Happen Great sequencing yields a better talk
with natural flow.
Using your natural style will relax you.
Sharing – as a peer – will connect you to your audience.
The more you think about your presentation and talk through it the better you’ll do.
