However, this newsletter will be a bit different as we will highlight all of the initiatives we have targeted in the past year under five main pillars the school is surveyed on. The pillars are: 1) Safe and Caring Schools, 2) Student Learning Opportunities, 3) Prepara- tion for Lifelong Learning the World of Work and Citizenship, 4) Parental Involvement and 5) Continuous Improvement. See page 8 for more information. When completing the sur- vey, you will have the option of choosing various levels of agree- ment/disagreement, and you also have the opportunity to select “don’t know or unsure”, which unfortunately factors in as a negative response for our school. We are hoping that this pillar section in the newsletter this month and the Schuler School Educational Plan in all previous newsletters help to alleviate this problem. While our intention is not to influence your responses, we are very proud of the initiatives and educational climate at Schuler School. How- ever, there is always room for improvement, hence the re- quest for your involvement in the survey. Please assist us in recognizing what is working well at the school, and what areas of programming and operation may be adjusted to better meet the needs of our students.

Happy New Year to all of our families and community. I hope the holiday season treated you well. Alberta Education con-ducts a yearly survey of parents, students and staff in the education system. For small schools like Schuler, the survey includes stu-dents in grades 4 and above, and their parents. The second point is to address one concern we often hear, which is parents feel they lack the knowledge to accurately answer certain parts of the survey. This month Schuler School is going to embark on a fun pro-ject that everyone — students, parents, teachers, the princi-pal, the secretary/librarian, educational assistants, custo-dian and bus drivers — will participate in so we can all reap the many benefits. From now until Family Literacy Day on Friday, January 27, 2017 — the day we will unveil the project — Schuler School is going to post clues in the library about the all-school activity.

The first clue to this mystery is: Wyoming. Here are some facts about Wyoming:

Wyoming is the 10th largest state but has the fewest peo-ple.

The name "Wyoming" origi-nated from a Native Ameri-can word meaning "Land of Big Plains."

If you stop in to the school, visit the library to read the latest clue, or ask students to share them. Watch for a letter that will be sent home on Friday, January 27 — the day Schuler School will unveil this special project.

Parents, Students and Community of Schuler, Happy New Year, I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays with family and friends. I would like to take this oppor-tunity to update you on the status of the Schuler Replacement School project.

We have now received an updated project schedule for the Schuler Replacement School. Due to the soil issues communicated back in January 2016, a wet 2016 spring/summer and ivory block back-order, the school construc-tion completion date has been delayed from March 3, 2017 to May 29, 2017. With time required for identifying and fixing building deficiencies and relocation to the new school, the Schuler Replacement School will now open for students in August 2017. We will plan for our staff to start moving their supplies and resources before they leave for the summer, should time allow for it.

Although the delay is not ideal, having the summer months to inspect and identify deficiencies, will ensure stu-dents enter into a fully-finished building. The division is very excited about this school and the learning opportu-nities it will provide for the students of Schuler and surrounding area. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or (403) 527-5516 ext. 2313.

Sincerely,

Ryan Boser

Secretary Treasurer
