NOTE : THERE ARE SEVERAL WORDS SUCH AS IN, ON ,AFTER ,BEFORE ,SINCE ,OFF , ABOUT WHICH CAN BE USED AS ADVERBS AS WELL AS PREPOSITIONS. AS A PREPOSITION, SUCH A WORD GOVERNS A NOUN/PRONOUN , BUT AS AN ADVERB IT DOES NOT:

TYPES OF PREPOSITIONS:

•(a)simple prepositions: in, of , off , to , at , with, by, for, from, out, till ,through, up ,with.

•(b) compound prepositions : above, about, across, along, among ,around, before, behind, below, beneath ,beside, between, beyond, inside, outside, within, without, etc.

•(c) phrase/group prepositions: according to, in front of, by means of, because of, by virtue of, for the sake of, in addition to, in course of, in order to, in place of ,with reference to, in spite of, instead of ,owing to, on account of, etc.

•(d)participle prepositions : concerning, regarding, pending, notwithstanding, passing, considering during etc.

Prepositions of time and date : at, on ,in by, to till/until, during, for since ,before, often, afterwards , then within.

(a)at : (i) at a time : at noon, at night at Diwali , at 4 o’clock , at 5 a.m. at midnight, at first , at last , at the beginning , at the end.

(b) in: (i) in a period : in 1980 , in may , in the morning/evening/afternoon , in winter/summer , in a month/week/ year, etc.

(ii) before time : in time.

(iii) time expressions :in the beginning ,in the end .

(c)By : before that time /at that time : by 4 o ‘clock, by Monday.

(d) From : used with to / till or until ; from 7 a. m to /till 9 p. m .

•(e) from : used with to / till or until : from 7 a. m. to/ till 9 p.m.

• (e) to till, and until :

• (a)till means upto: they worked till 5 p.m.

• (b)to is always used with from : they worked from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

•(f) During: known periods of time: during winter, during 2014.

•(g)since: indicates the definite time when the action begins: she has been sleeping since 9 o’ clock.

(A)IN - IN THE ROOM , IN DELHI, IN THE COUNTRY, IN THE FOREST, IN BED, IN THE GLASS, ETC.

(B)ON - ON A FARM , ON THE RAILWAYS LINE, ON THE PROJECT, ETC.

(C)AT – AT BILGA, AT 200 , MODEL TOWN, AT HOME, AT WORK, AT THE RIVER, SEA, LAKE, ETC.

(D)TO – TO SCHOOL, TO THE G.T. ROAD, ETC.
