    The Preservation South Conference is an opportunity for preservation-mindedstudents from across the Southeast to come together to learn, network, and

    have fun with their future colleagues. Attendees will have the opportunity tohear from a diverse group of knowledgeable speakers on a variety of currentissues in preservation. Speakers from the local, state, and national levelhave agreed to share their collective knowledge for the betterment of thenext generation of preservationists. The City of Athens will serve as host forthe event and will open its doors to attendees to experience its community,atmosphere, and historic architecture. Join us in Athens from February 24th to26th, 2012, for the rst annual Preservation South Conference!

    This inaugural meeting is being hosted by the Student Historic PreservationOrganization at the University of Georgia, with the goal of providing anannual student-centered and student-led event. We hope that other studentorganizations will volunteer to plan and host this event in coming years so thatit will highlight the variety of preservation programs around the Southeast.Help us start a new tradition!

    Keeping in mind that this is an event for and by students, we have worked hardto keep costs minimal. Conference events are free to attend with registration;however, attendees will be on their own for transportation, lodging, and meals.

    Stephen T. Ayers is the 11th Architect of the Capitol. Mr. Ayersis responsible for the facilities maintenance and operation of

    the historic Capitol Building, the care and improvement ofmore than 460 acres of Capitol grounds, and the operationand maintenance of 17.4 million square feet of buildingsincluding: the House and Senate Congressional OfceBuildings, the Capitol Visitor Center, the Library of CongressBuildings, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, the ThurgoodMarshall Federal Judiciary Building, and other facilities. He

    is responsible for the care of all works of art in the Capitol under the direction

    of the Joint Committee on the Library and is responsible for the maintenanceand restoration of murals, outdoor sculpture, and other architectural elementsthroughout the Capitol complex. In addition, he serves as Acting Director of theU.S. Botanic Garden and the National Garden under the Joint Committee onthe Library. The Architect of the Capitol also serves as a member of the CapitolPolice Board and the Congressional Accessibility Services Board, as well as anex ofcio member of the United States Capitol Preservation Commission.

    Prior to joining the AOC, Mr. Ayers was a General Engineer with the Voiceof America. He also served as an ofcer in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Ayers isa licensed architect in California, a member of the American Institute ofArchitects, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and an AccreditedProfessional in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. He completedhis Masters of Science degree in Systems Management from the University ofSouthern California and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Architectureat the University of Maryland.

    Georgia TheatreCome take a tour of one of the Souths most famous music venues, the Georgia

    Theatre. The theatre, originally built as a YMCA in 1889, has a tremendouslegacy as one of the most beloved places in Athens. It has hosted bands likeR.E.M. and the B-52s as well as the Police, Widespread Panic and the ZacBrown Band. The theatre was almost lost when a re gutted the building inJune of 2009, but it was saved through the vision of its owner, Wilmot Greene,and a unique partnership with the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Takea walk through the newly rebuilt theatre with Wilmot and see rst-hand whatcan happen when preservation and innovation meet.

    T.R.R. Cobb HouseThe T.R.R. Cobb House is one of Athens most famous residences in a townknown for impressive homes. This house has been around the block, literally.Originally located two blocks down on Prince Avenue, the house was threatenedwith demolition in the 1980s. It was instead moved 70 miles away to StoneMountain where it sat mothballed for 20 years. Then the Watson BrownFoundation returned the house to Athens and restored it to the showpiece you

    can see today.

    The City of Madison and Morgan County, GeorgiaTake a drive to beautiful Morgan County to visit two important sites in ourregions rural history with Christine McCauley, Executive Director of theMadison-Morgan Conservancy. First visit Nolan Crossroads, an agriculturalhub important to the development of Morgan County that retains a tremendousamount of integrity, and learn about the challenges facing its future. Thenhead out to the circa 1871 Wallace Grove School to learn about the communitypartnerships that brought this African American school house back from thebrink of destruction. Finally, head into Madison on your own to grab somelunch and explore one of the most beautiful cities in Georgia.

    Preserving the Classic CityJoin Professor John C. Waters, the founder of UGAs Historic PreservationProgram, for a bus tour of historic Athens. Visit sites and learn about greatsuccesses and tragic losses for preservation in Athens from a passionate

    advocate. See rst-hand how Athenians have managed to hold on to theirunique heritage while the city continues to grow with UGA, and see how theUniversity has been a champion of preservation beyond its campus. Space forthis tour is limited.
